Chapter 9: The Last Lie They Told Me
For a moment, I thought I had misheard Victor.
“My doctor?””
The words came out barely above a whisper.
Daniel looked at me.
“What happened?””
I didn’t answer him.
I couldn’t.
Because suddenly every appointment, every conversation, every reassuring smile from the person I trusted with my baby’s life felt different.
Victor continued on the phone.
“Emma, listen to me carefully. Do not go home. Do not go to the hospital. Do not contact anyone connected to your pregnancy.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Why?””
“We found unauthorized access to your medical records.””
The room became silent.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emma?””
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
He frowned.
“Know what?””
“That someone was looking into my pregnancy.””
His expression shifted.
And that tiny hesitation told me everything.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew something.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“I suspected.””
I stared at him.
“You suspected and said nothing?””
“Emma, I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
The sound was empty.
“You always say that.””
His face tightened.
“But somehow every time you protect me, I end up bleeding.””
He looked away.
Victor’s voice came through the phone again.
“Emma, are you still there?””
“Yes.””
“Leave now.””
I hung up.
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Emma, please.””
I raised my hand.
“No.””
He stopped.
For once, he listened.
“I need you to understand something.””
His eyes met mine.
“I don’t care if you’re sorry.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
“I don’t care if you finally realize your family is evil.””
He swallowed.
“I don’t care if you have a flash drive full of evidence.””
I pointed toward his hand.
“Because the worst thing you did wasn’t helping them.””
His expression broke.
“It was making me believe I was safe.””
The silence between us was unbearable.
Then the office door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Daniel immediately turned.
“Michael.””
I recognized him.
The Whitmore family attorney.
The man who had handled our marriage paperwork.
The man who had smiled at our wedding.
He looked at me calmly.
“Mrs. Whitmore.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“You knew.””
He didn’t pretend.
“Knew what?””
“About the marriage agreement.””
His expression remained neutral.
“Yes.””
The answer was too easy.
I stared at him.
“You prepared it.””
“Yes.””
“And the inheritance clause?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What are you doing here?””
Michael ignored him.
“Emma, you need to understand something. This family has survived because people follow agreements.””
I almost smiled.
“Is that what you call manipulation?””
“I call it protection.””
“Protection for who?””
He didn’t answer.
Because we both knew.
Michael stepped forward.
“You are in a difficult position.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You are.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“Excuse me?””
“You spent years helping them hide things.””
I looked at him.
“And now you’re standing here because you’re scared.””
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
Daniel noticed too.
“What happened?””
Michael looked at him.
“You should have handled this before tonight.””
Daniel went pale.
“Before tonight?””
Michael sighed.
“You were supposed to keep her away from the evidence.””
My blood ran cold.
Daniel looked at him.
“I told you I couldn’t do that.””
“You failed.””
The words hung in the air.
Failed.
Not betrayed.
Not hurt.
Failed.
Like I was a task.
A problem.
An obstacle.
I stepped back.
“You were all watching me.””
Nobody answered.
I felt something inside me settle.
The last piece of the puzzle.
They hadn’t underestimated me because they thought I was weak.
They underestimated me because they thought I was predictable.
The quiet wife.
The loyal wife.
The pregnant wife who would forgive anything.
They were wrong.
I pulled out my phone.
Michael noticed.
“What are you doing?””
I smiled.
“For once?””
I looked directly at him.
“Protecting myself.””
I pressed record.
His face changed.
Daniel looked shocked.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I kept recording.
“Let him talk.””
Michael stepped forward.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“I understand perfectly.””
I looked at him.
“You’re going to explain why my medical records were accessed.””
Silence.
Then his face hardened.
“You really think you can fight this family?””
I smiled.
“I already am.””
He moved toward me.
Daniel stepped between us.
“Don’t.””
Everyone froze.
Because it was the first time Daniel had ever protected me.
Not with words.
With action.
Michael stared at him.
“You’re choosing her?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then back at him.
“Yes.””
A bitter smile crossed Michael’s face.
“Too late.””
He turned and walked away.
But before leaving, he stopped.
“You should ask your wife what happened the night Lily disappeared.””
I froze.
Daniel looked terrified.
“What does that mean?””
Michael left.
The door closed.
And suddenly the room felt much smaller.
I turned to Daniel.
“What happened that night?””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
His face was pale.
“I wasn’t there.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
He looked down.
“I found Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“You found her?””
He nodded.
“After she disappeared.””
“Where?””
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
“In the Whitmore family house.””
The room went silent.
My voice shook.
“And you didn’t tell anyone?””
His eyes filled.
“I thought she was dead.””
I stared at him.
“Thought?””
He looked at me.
“She was alive.””
I felt dizzy.
“Then why did she disappear?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
And finally said the one thing he had been hiding.
“Because she saw who ordered it.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Lily.
Only one sentence.
*Emma, don’t trust Daniel. He still hasn’t told you the whole truth.*
I looked at Daniel.
He looked back at me.
And for the first time, I wondered…
May you like
Was Daniel confessing because he wanted redemption?
Or because he was afraid of what Lily would reveal?
