Chapter 6: The Sister Who Wasn’t Gone
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
I stared at the photograph.
Again.
And again.
Trying to convince myself my eyes were wrong.
The woman beside Daniel looked exactly like Lily.
Same dark hair.
Same small scar near her eyebrow.
Same smile.
A smile I had spent years trying to remember.
“That’s impossible.””
My father sat beside me.
“Emma.””
“My sister is dead.””
Nobody corrected me.
Nobody comforted me.
And that scared me more.
Victor slowly opened another folder.
“We need to tell you everything.””
I looked at him.
“Everything?””
He nodded.
“Everything.””
The story began six years earlier.
Before Daniel.
Before the Whitmores.
Before my marriage.
My sister Lily had discovered financial fraud involving several companies connected to the Whitmores.
She had planned to expose them.
But then she disappeared.
Three days later, her car was found abandoned.
A month after that, the police declared her dead.
“No body was ever found,” my father said.
I froze.
“What?””
He looked down.
“I was told not to tell you.””
“By who?””
His silence was enough.
“The police?””
“No.””
Victor answered.
“By someone who threatened your family.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Who?””
My father looked at the photograph.
“Eleanor Whitmore.””
The room became colder.
I stood up.
“No.””
My father looked at me.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You’re telling me that woman destroyed my sister?””
“We don’t know everything yet.””
“But you know enough.””
Victor nodded.
“We know Lily was investigating the same accounts you later discovered.””
I stared at the papers.
“So Daniel knew?””
Victor didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Yes.””
The word felt like a physical blow.
I walked to the window.
Outside, rain began hitting the glass.
“I married the man who helped destroy my sister.””
My father stood.
“Emma, we don’t know if Daniel was involved in Lily’s disappearance.””
“But he knew.””
“Yes.””
“That’s enough.””
A silence followed.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a woman spoke.
“Emma?””
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
No.
It couldn’t be.
“Who is this?””
A shaky breath.
Then:
“I’m sorry.””
My knees almost gave out.
“Lily?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The voice continued.
“I should have told you sooner.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m close.””
My heart pounded.
“Why did you let me think you were dead?””
Silence.
Then her answer.
“Because they were watching you.””
I looked at my father.
Victor was already reaching for his phone.
“Who?””
The voice trembled.
“The Whitmores.””
A sound came from the other end.
Like someone entering a room.
Lily whispered:
“Emma, I don’t have much time.””
“Tell me everything.””
Another pause.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Daniel didn’t marry you because of the evidence.””
I swallowed.
“Then why?””
Her voice became barely audible.
“He married you because he thought you were Lily’s replacement.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
My father looked horrified.
Victor immediately checked the call.
“She’s gone.””
I barely heard him.
Because one thought was repeating in my head.
Daniel.
My husband.
The man who promised forever.
Had never seen me as myself.
May you like
He had seen me as a shadow of someone else.
Someone he failed to destroy.
