Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

The woman standing at the ballroom entrance was shaking.

Her hands were wrapped tightly around the ring.

The Matriarch Ring.

The one that had supposedly disappeared from Chloe’s finger.

The one that had destroyed my dress.

The one that had nearly destroyed my marriage.

Chloe stared at her.

“Lydia.””

The woman looked terrified.

“I’m sorry.””

A wave of whispers moved through the guests.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What is happening?””

Lydia lowered her eyes.

“I was told to keep quiet.””

“By who?”” Daniel asked.

Nobody answered.

But everyone already knew.

Chloe’s face had lost all its confidence.

“Don’t listen to her. She’s lying.””

Victor calmly walked toward Lydia.

“Miss Carter, tell everyone what happened.””

Lydia looked at Chloe.

Then at Eleanor.

Then finally at me.

“I was helping with the wedding preparations.””

Her voice trembled.

“An hour before the ceremony, Chloe asked me to come upstairs.””

Chloe shook her head.

“No.””

Lydia continued.

“She gave me the ring.””

The ballroom went silent.

“She told me to hide it until the reception started.””

Daniel looked at his sister.

“Why?””

Lydia swallowed.

“She said she needed everyone to believe someone stole it.””

My chest tightened.

I already knew the answer.

But I needed to hear it.

“Why me?”” I whispered.

Lydia looked at me.

“She said everyone would believe it was you.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Because she’s my wife?””

Lydia nodded.

“She said the family never accepted Emma.””

Nobody spoke.

Chloe suddenly stepped forward.

“You’re a liar!””

Lydia flinched.

Chloe pointed at her.

“She’s doing this because Emma paid her!””

I looked at Chloe.

“You really think everyone is as dishonest as you are?””

Her eyes flashed.

“You don’t know anything about this family.””

I almost laughed.

“No.””

I looked around the ballroom.

“I know exactly what this family is.””

Daniel stared at me.

“Emma…”

I turned to him.

“What?””

He looked lost.

For the first time, he looked like he was seeing everything clearly.

But clarity came too late.

Victor handed him a copy of the documents.

“You should read these.””

Daniel looked down.

His expression changed as he flipped through the pages.

“What are these?””

“Financial records.””

Eleanor’s face went pale.

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom?””

Victor answered.

“Your mother has been moving money from the company account for years.””

The room exploded.

“That’s impossible.””

“My mother would never.””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Emma…”

I looked at him.

“I tried to tell you.””

He looked down.

“When?””

I remembered.

Every dinner where I brought up concerns.

Every night where he told me I was paranoid.

Every time he defended them instead of listening.

“Six months ago.””

His face fell.

“I thought you were trying to attack my family.””

I smiled sadly.

“No, Daniel.””

My voice became quiet.

“I was trying to save yours.””

For a moment, he had no answer.

Then Chloe screamed.

“This is all because of her!””

She pointed at me.

“She came into this family and poisoned everything!””

Victor looked at her.

“No.””

He held up another document.

“She came into this family and discovered what you were hiding.””

The room became still.

Chloe looked at Eleanor.

And that tiny movement revealed everything.

They had planned this together.

The accusation.

The humiliation.

The stolen ring.

Maybe even the ruined marriage.

Daniel saw it too.

“You knew?””

Eleanor looked away.

“Daniel.””

“You knew about this?””

She said nothing.

His face turned pale.

“Mom.””

Finally, she spoke.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I understand perfectly.””

I watched my husband stand there.

The same man who had handed my purse away.

The same man who had watched my dress tear.

The same man who had allowed everyone to question me.

And somehow, I still felt sadness.

Not because I wanted him back.

Because I missed the person I thought he was.

Victor touched my shoulder.

“Your father wants you to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Now?””

He nodded.

“Immediately.””

Daniel heard.

“Emma, wait.””

I stopped.

He walked toward me.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid.

“I made a mistake.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His eyes filled.

“I was wrong.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t make one mistake, Daniel.””

I looked down at my torn gown.

“You made a choice.””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was my father.

I answered.

“Dad.””

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“Are you still inside the ballroom?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Good.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

His answer made my blood run cold.

“Because I just received the final report.””

I looked at Victor.

“What report?””

My father lowered his voice.

“The one proving Daniel knew about the fraud before tonight.””

I froze.

Across the room, Daniel watched me.

And for the first time…

May you like

I wondered if he had never been my victim.

Maybe he had been my enemy all along.
