Chapter 8: The Confession in the Dark

I almost deleted the message.

Almost.

But curiosity is dangerous.

Especially when someone has spent years hiding the truth from you.

I met Daniel that evening.

Not because I trusted him.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I needed answers.

The location he chose was an empty office building owned by Whitmore Holdings.

The same building where I had once worked.

The same building where I first discovered the missing money.

When I entered, Daniel was standing near the window.

He looked exhausted.

Not like the confident businessman everyone saw.

Like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.

“Emma.””

I stayed near the door.

“Say what you need to say.””

He looked at me.

“You talked to Lily.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

He closed his eyes.

“She shouldn’t have come back.””

My anger rose instantly.

“Shouldn’t have come back?””

He looked at me.

“She was supposed to stay hidden.””

I laughed.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The truth.””

I stepped closer.

“You’re not worried about her safety.””

His silence confirmed it.

“You’re worried she can expose you.””

Daniel looked away.

“Emma, you don’t understand what happened.””

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice cracked.

“I was twenty-eight when I found out what my mother was doing.””

I didn’t speak.

“I thought I could fix it.””

He laughed bitterly.

“I thought I could control it.””

“And then?””

He looked at the floor.

“Then I realized I couldn’t.””

“Because you were weak?””

He flinched.

“Yes.””

The answer surprised me.

He continued.

“I should have gone to the police.””

“Yes.””

“I should have protected Lily.””

“Yes.””

“I should have told you the truth before we got married.””

“Yes.””

Each word seemed to hurt him.

Good.

But not enough.

“Why me?””

He looked at me.

Finally.

Honestly.

And that was the worst part.

“Because of Lily.””

My chest tightened.

“Explain.””

“When she disappeared, your father blamed the Whitmores.””

“He was right.””

“Yes.””

Daniel swallowed.

“But Eleanor knew your father would never stop searching.””

I stared at him.

“So she needed someone close to me.””

He nodded.

“She wanted me to watch you.””

My hands went cold.

“But you fell in love with me.””

He looked away.

“That’s what made everything worse.””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“So which part was real?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“The part where I loved you was real.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“It was.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Because love doesn’t look like this.””

He looked broken.

“I know.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small device.

A flash drive.

“What is that?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He handed it to me.

“Everything.””

I stared at it.

“Why?””

“Because I’m done protecting them.””

I almost laughed.

“Now?””

His face fell.

“Yes.””

“After my dress was torn?””

“Yes.””

“After you let them accuse me?””

“Yes.””

“After you let me believe I married someone who loved me?””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“What happens if I take this?””

“They’ll come after me.””

“They already are.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

I turned to leave.

Then he said:

“Emma.””

I stopped.

“There’s something else.””

I looked back.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“The ring wasn’t the only thing Chloe planted.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

He looked terrified.

“Your pregnancy test results.””

I froze.

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“Chloe has been telling people the baby might not be mine.””

The room went silent.

I felt something inside me snap.

Not sadness.

Not pain.

Something colder.

Rage.

“Why?””

Daniel whispered:

“Because Eleanor wants the family inheritance.””

I stared at him.

“And if the baby isn’t considered a Whitmore heir?””

He looked at me.

“They can take everything.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Victor.

I answered immediately.

His voice was urgent.

“Emma, where are you?””

“Why?””

“Because we found out who helped Eleanor prepare the wedding trap.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Who?””

Victor’s answer came quietly.

May you like

And it changed everything.

“Your doctor.””
