Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Wedding

I didn’t sleep.

Not that night.

Not the next morning.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Daniel’s face.

Not the face from our wedding photos.

Not the face from our honeymoon.

The face from the ballroom.

The face of a man who knew.

By sunrise, my father had gathered everything.

Documents.

Phone records.

Company files.

Evidence.

A lifetime of secrets.

And somehow, none of it felt as painful as one sentence from my sister.

*He married you because he thought you were Lily’s replacement.*

I sat at the kitchen table staring at my untouched coffee.

My father placed a plate in front of me.

“You need to eat.””

“I’m not hungry.””

“You’re carrying my grandchild.””

I looked at him.

For the first time in months, I felt like someone was protecting me.

Not controlling me.

Not judging me.

Protecting me.

“I’m sorry.””

My father frowned.

“For what?””

“For not believing you.””

He sat down.

“Emma, love makes people defend impossible things.””

I smiled sadly.

“And what does hate make people do?””

He looked toward the files.

“Anything.””

By noon, Victor received a message.

Lily wanted to meet.

Not at the house.

Not anywhere public.

An old bookstore downtown.

The place where she and I used to go as children.

When I arrived, my hands were shaking.

Then I saw her.

Sitting near the back corner.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Lily stood.

And I ran.

I don’t remember crossing the room.

I only remember holding her.

Feeling her heartbeat.

Knowing she was real.

“You’re alive.””

She cried.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I pulled away.

“Don’t apologize first.””

Her eyes filled.

“I should have come back.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised both of us.

But it was the truth.

“I needed you.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because I was scared.””

I sat across from her.

“Tell me.””

And she did.

Six years earlier, Lily discovered that Eleanor Whitmore had been using company accounts to hide illegal transactions.

But Eleanor wasn’t alone.

She had someone inside.

Someone young.

Someone everyone trusted.

Daniel.

“He was different back then,” Lily said.

I laughed bitterly.

“No. He wasn’t.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Lily folded her hands.

“Daniel wasn’t born cruel.””

I stared at her.

“People say that right before explaining why someone destroyed lives.””

She looked away.

“He was trapped.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“Everyone is trapped until they have to make a choice.””

Lily became quiet.

Because she knew I was right.

“What happened after you found out?””

She swallowed.

“Eleanor discovered I had evidence.””

“And Daniel?””

“He tried to convince me to disappear.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he said if I exposed them, people would get hurt.””

I laughed softly.

“People?””

I looked down.

“Did he mean himself?””

Lily didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Then she reached into her bag.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“What is this?””

“The reason they wanted you blamed last night.””

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a document.

A marriage agreement.

My name.

Daniel’s name.

And one hidden clause.

My hands trembled.

“What is this?””

Lily looked at me.

“The reason Eleanor chose you.””

I read the line again.

And again.

Then I understood.

The Whitmores hadn’t just wanted my silence.

They wanted something far more valuable.

My inheritance.

My father’s company shares.

Everything my family owned.

But there was one detail I noticed.

A detail that made no sense.

The agreement had been prepared before Daniel proposed.

Before we started dating.

Before he told me he loved me.

I looked at Lily.

“When did they make this?””

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“Before he ever met you.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

Only four words.

*I know about Lily.*

I stared at it.

A second message appeared.

*Meet me alone.*

May you like

Then a third.

*Before your sister tells you why I really married you.*
