Chapter 4: The Husband Behind the Mask

I couldn’t hear the music anymore.

I couldn’t hear the guests whispering.

I couldn’t hear Chloe crying or Eleanor arguing with Victor.

All I could hear was my father’s voice through the phone.

“Emma, listen carefully.””

I stepped away from everyone.

“Dad.””

“Do not confront Daniel yet.””

My eyes stayed on my husband.

“Why?””

“Because if the documents are accurate, Daniel wasn’t unaware.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“What do you mean?””

My father was silent for a moment.

Then:

“He signed them.””

I closed my eyes.

The room spun.

No.

Not Daniel.

Not the man I married.

Not the man who held my hand when we found out we were having a baby.

I looked at him again.

But now I wasn’t seeing my husband.

I was seeing every moment I ignored.

Every late-night meeting.

Every locked drawer.

Every time he told me I was imagining things.

“Emma?””

My father’s voice brought me back.

“Stay calm.””

I whispered.

“I understand.””

But I didn’t.

Not really.

Because betrayal from strangers hurts.

Betrayal from the person you built your life around changes the way you see everything.

I ended the call.

Daniel immediately approached.

“What did your father say?””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His expression tightened.

“Why what?””

“Why did you do it?””

He froze.

The silence answered before his mouth did.

“Emma…”

“Don’t.””

My voice was shaking.

“Not tonight.””

He looked around.

“I can explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s what everyone says when the truth finally catches them.””

He reached for my hand.

I stepped back.

That movement hurt him.

Good.

For three years, I had been the only one hurting.

“Did you know?”” I asked.

His eyes dropped.

“Emma.””

“Did you know about the money?””

No answer.

“Did you know about the plan tonight?””

Still nothing.

Then he whispered:

“I didn’t want it to go this far.””

My heart broke.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he didn’t deny it.

“You knew.””

He looked desperate.

“I thought they would just scare you.””

The words were almost worse.

“Scare me?””

His voice cracked.

“I thought if you stopped investigating, everything would calm down.””

I stared at him.

“So you let your sister accuse me of stealing?””

“I didn’t know she would tear your dress.””

“But you knew she would humiliate me.””

He looked away.

And that was enough.

I turned.

Victor was waiting.

“I’m ready to leave.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emma, please.””

I stopped near the ballroom doors.

For a second, I remembered our first date.

The coffee shop.

The rain.

The way he laughed when he spilled sugar everywhere.

I remembered believing I had found someone safe.

Then I looked at the torn gown hanging around me.

And I understood.

The person I missed had never existed.

“I loved you,” I said quietly.

Daniel looked at me.

“But I loved someone who would have protected me.””

His face collapsed.

I walked out.

Outside, the night air hit my face.

A black car waited by the entrance.

My father had already arranged everything.

As Victor helped me inside, I looked back through the glass doors.

The wedding continued without the bride’s happiness.

Without the family’s perfect image.

Without their lies.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Victor.

I opened it.

There was one sentence.

*The police have arrived.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

From an unknown number.

My blood froze.

Because it wasn’t from the police.

It was from someone inside the Whitmore family.

May you like

The message contained only five words.

*You don’t know the real truth.*
