Chapter 9: The Memory I Was Never Supposed to Find
I stared at the photograph.
My hands went cold.
The image was old.
The colors had faded.
The edges were slightly bent, like it had been carried around for years.
But there was no mistaking it.
The man standing beside Rebecca was me.
Younger.
Different haircut.
A face without the lines that came from years of disappointment.
I looked at Rebecca.
She looked like she had seen a ghost.
“What is this?””
She didn’t answer.
“Rebecca.””
Her lips parted.
“I…”
She stopped.
That was all it took.
Another unfinished sentence.
Another hidden truth.
I held up the phone.
“Why am I in this picture?””
Lily looked confused.
“What picture?””
I handed her the phone.
She studied it.
Then looked at me.
“Dad…”
“I don’t remember this.””
Rebecca sat down.
Her hands shook.
“I knew this day would come.””
I felt anger rise again.
“You knew?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Of course you did.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone knows everything except me.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Do you know what this is?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why send it to me?””
“I didn’t.””
I looked at the number.
Unknown.
The message had come from someone trying to expose something.
Not help.
Not comfort.
Expose.
Lily looked at Rebecca.
“Mom, what happened?””
Rebecca stared at the picture.
Then whispered:
“That was taken before I met you.””
She looked at me.
“Before we got married.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where?””
“A charity event.””
I stared.
“I never went to a charity event with you.””
Rebecca swallowed.
“You did.””
“No.””
“You just don’t remember.””
The words bothered me.
Because they sounded impossible.
How could I forget meeting my future wife?
How could I forget a moment important enough to be photographed?
“I would remember.””
Rebecca looked down.
“You were going through a difficult time.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She hesitated.
“You had just separated from your first wife.””
I remembered that.
The worst year of my life.
The year when I barely slept.
The year when I avoided people because I didn’t want anyone to see how broken I was.
Rebecca continued.
“You were volunteering at a community center.””
I stared at her.
A memory flickered.
A room.
Coffee.
A woman crying.
A conversation I barely remembered.
No.
It couldn’t be.
“Rebecca…”
She looked at me.
“Have we met before our first date?””
Silence.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.””
Lily looked shocked.
“What?””
Rebecca looked at her.
“I didn’t tell you.””
I turned away.
“Why?””
“Because when I saw you again years later…”
She wiped her tears.
“You didn’t remember me.””
My chest tightened.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was afraid.””
I almost laughed.
“Again?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because I thought it was a sign.””
“A sign?””
“That maybe we were meant to find each other again.””
I looked at the picture.
“You built our entire relationship on a memory I didn’t have.””
Rebecca looked ashamed.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I built it on a feeling.””
I shook my head.
“But you kept secrets.””
“Yes.””
“About Ethan.””
“Yes.””
“About Lily.””
“Yes.””
“About the baby.””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The pattern was impossible to ignore.
Every secret started small.
Every secret became bigger.
Until it became a wall between us.
Ethan looked at the picture again.
“There’s something strange.””
“What?””
He pointed.
“Look at the background.””
I leaned closer.
Behind Rebecca and me was a man standing near the entrance.
A man partially hidden by the crowd.
I couldn’t see his face clearly.
But Ethan seemed to recognize something.
“Who is that?””
Ethan zoomed in.
His expression changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He looked at Rebecca.
“Where was this taken?””
She frowned.
“I told you. The community center.””
“What year?””
She told him.
Ethan went silent.
“Ethan?””
He looked at me.
“That date.””
“What about it?””
He swallowed.
“That’s the same week my mother died.””
Rebecca froze.
“What?””
Ethan looked at her.
“You knew?””
Her face changed.
“No.””
“You were there.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No. I didn’t know your mother was there.””
Ethan stared at the image.
“I need to check something.””
He pulled out his phone.
A few seconds later, he looked up.
“This isn’t random.””
My heart tightened.
“What isn’t?””
“The person who sent this knows about all of us.””
I looked at the picture.
“Who?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Then Lily spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at the photo.
“The man in the background.””
She zoomed in.
“I’ve seen him before.””
Rebecca stood.
“Where?””
Lily looked at her mother.
“In the old photos.””
Rebecca went pale.
“What old photos?””
“The ones in your storage box.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Rebecca.
“Who is he?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I stepped closer.
“Stop.””
She looked at me.
“No more.””
My voice was quiet.
“No more pretending you don’t know.””
Rebecca looked terrified.
“I really don’t.””
Lily searched through her phone.
Then showed us another picture.
An old family photo.
Rebecca.
A younger Ethan.
A woman who must have been Ethan’s mother.
And standing behind them…
The same man.
The same face.
The same person.
Ethan stared.
His expression changed completely.
“That’s impossible.””
“Who is he?”” I asked.
Ethan didn’t answer.
He looked at Rebecca.
Then at Lily.
Then at me.
“That’s my father.””
The room froze.
Rebecca whispered:
“Your father?””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“The man my mother told me died before I was born.””
Nobody moved.
Because now the secrets weren’t just about affairs.
Or DNA.
Or lies between husbands and wives.
They went back generations.
Rebecca sat down.
“I don’t understand.””
Ethan looked at her.
“My mother spent her entire life saying my father abandoned her.””
He pointed at the photo.
“But he was alive.””
Lily looked overwhelmed.
“So what does this mean?””
No one answered.
Because we were all asking the same question.
Why had someone hidden this?
Why send the photo now?
Why reveal these secrets after so many years?
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
This time, there was no photo.
Only words.
“You finally found the first secret.””
I felt a chill.
Another message appeared.
“But you still don’t know why Rebecca chose Daniel.””
I looked at Rebecca.
Her face lost all color.
The final message appeared.
“She didn’t marry him by accident.””
I stared at the screen.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca covered her mouth.
“Daniel…”
I looked at her.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
She started crying.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She couldn’t answer.
I looked at the message again.
Then back at her.
“Why did you marry me?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Because I knew who you were.””
The room went silent.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time all night, I saw true fear.
Not fear of losing me.
Fear of what I would discover.
“Daniel…”
She took a shaky breath.
“Your first wife didn’t leave you for the reason you think.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Rebecca looked down.
“She left because she found something.””
I stepped back.
“Found what?””
Rebecca’s voice broke.
“The truth about your family.””
I stared.
“My family?””
She nodded.
“And she was about to tell you.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Tell me what?””
Rebecca looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then at Ethan.
And whispered:
“That your life was connected to ours long before we ever met.””
My phone buzzed again.
One final message.
This time, from a name.
Not a number.
A name I knew.
My first wife.
The woman I hadn’t heard from in eight years.
The message said:
“Daniel, if you’re finally reading this… I’m sorry I wasn’t brave enough to tell you before.””
I stared at the screen.
Then the second line appeared.
“Rebecca was never the only person hiding the truth from you.””
I looked at everyone in the room.
And realized the biggest secret wasn’t about the baby.
It wasn’t about Lily.
May you like
It wasn’t even about Rebecca.
It was about me.
