Chapter 5: The Truth Buried Beneath Two Families
“Michael.””
The name hung in the air.
One word.
One name.
And suddenly, every piece of the story I thought I understood shifted into something darker.
I looked at Rebecca.
Then at Lily.
Then toward the hallway where the nursery stood.
The room where I had spent months preparing for a child.
The room where I had painted stars on the wall.
The room where I had stood alone at three in the morning, holding a tiny blanket and imagining the future.
Now I wondered how much of that future had ever belonged to me.
“Say that again.””
Rebecca wiped her tears.
“I was with Michael that night.””
Lily looked completely lost.
“I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
And somehow, that was the worst part.
There were too many secrets.
Too many names.
Too many moments where everyone else knew something I didn’t.
“Rebecca,” I said slowly, “you told me you were working late.””
“I know.””
“You came home and told me you were pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“And before you told me…”
I couldn’t finish the sentence.
Because finishing it meant accepting it.
Rebecca looked down.
“Yes.””
Lily stood up.
“Mom, are you saying the baby might be Michael’s?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Lily’s face changed.
“No.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“No, because you said Daniel was his father.””
Rebecca started crying.
“I believed he was.””
I stared at her.
“You believed?””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t know.””
“You didn’t know?””
My voice rose.
“You had a relationship with another man. You had a history with him. You knew there was a possibility.””
“I knew there was a possibility.””
The honesty almost made it worse.
“But I thought it was you.””
I shook my head.
“How could you think that?””
She looked broken.
“Because the timing…”
“The timing?””
She nodded.
“I was confused. I thought it happened before.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because my mind couldn’t process how many times she had gambled with my life.
“So you guessed.””
“No.””
“You guessed, and then you let me become a father based on that guess.””
Rebecca covered her face.
“I was going to get a test.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“When?””
Her silence returned.
The same silence that had exposed every lie before.
Lily looked between us.
“Wait.””
Her voice shook.
“If Mom wasn’t sure about the baby…”
She looked at Rebecca.
“Why did she tell Daniel it was his?””
Rebecca looked at her daughter.
“Because I wanted it to be.””
The answer stunned me.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca’s tears fell.
“It means I wanted our family.””
I stared.
“Our family?””
“Yes.””
She stepped toward me.
“I loved you.””
I moved back.
The movement hurt her.
I could see that.
But I couldn’t stop.
“Love doesn’t give you permission to rewrite reality.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No, I don’t think you do.””
My voice cracked.
“You didn’t just lie about a baby.””
I pointed toward Lily.
“You lied about her father.””
Then toward the nursery.
“You lied about him.””
Then toward myself.
“And you lied to me every single day.””
Nobody spoke.
The house that once felt warm now felt like a courtroom.
Everyone waiting for the next piece of evidence.
Finally, Lily whispered:
“Who is Michael?””
Rebecca looked at her.
“Your father.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“I mean who is he now?””
That question seemed to hurt Rebecca more.
“He lives in another state.””
“Did he try to find me?””
Rebecca looked away.
“No.””
“Did he want to?””
“I don’t know.””
Lily laughed sadly.
“You always say that.””
Rebecca looked confused.
“What?””
“You never know.””
The words were quiet.
But they carried years of pain.
“I don’t know why he left.””
“I don’t know why he came back.””
“I don’t know why I lied.””
Lily wiped her eyes.
“But you always know how to hide things.””
Rebecca sat down.
She looked exhausted.
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
The answer came from Lily immediately.
Rebecca looked at her.
“I was wrong.””
Lily nodded.
“You were.””
I had never heard Lily speak to her mother that way.
Not with anger.
With disappointment.
And somehow that was worse.
A few minutes later, I walked outside.
I needed air.
The cold night hit my face.
I stood on the front porch staring at the street.
The same street where I had brought Lily home after her first driving lesson.
The same street where I had carried the baby inside after the hospital.
The same place where I thought I knew my life.
The door opened behind me.
Lily stepped outside.
“Dad?””
I looked at her.
She sat beside me.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then she said:
“Are you going to leave?””
The question broke me.
Not because I expected it.
Because I knew she wasn’t asking about Rebecca.
She was asking about herself.
I turned toward her.
“Why would you ask me that?””
She shrugged.
“Because everyone leaves eventually.””
My heart sank.
“Lily.””
“It’s true.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I thought my biological father left because he didn’t want me.””
She swallowed.
“Then I found out he didn’t even know I existed.””
She looked down.
“And now the person I thought was my dad might not be my dad either.””
I reached for her hand.
“Listen to me.””
She looked up.
“Nothing changes how I feel about you.””
Her eyes filled.
“You don’t know that.””
“Yes, I do.””
“But I’m not your real daughter.””
I felt something inside me break.
“Lily.””
She looked away.
“I know what you mean.””
“No, you don’t.””
I took a breath.
“Do you remember when you were fourteen and you told me nobody noticed you?””
She nodded.
“I remember.””
“I noticed.””
She looked at me.
“Do you remember the first time you called me Dad?””
A small smile appeared.
“Yeah.””
“You think one DNA test changes five years of showing up?””
She didn’t answer.
“It doesn’t.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For bringing this to you.””
I shook my head.
“You gave me the truth.””
She looked toward the house.
“Even if it destroyed everything?””
I followed her gaze.
“The truth didn’t destroy this family.””
I paused.
“The lies did.””
She nodded slowly.
Then her expression changed.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“There’s something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She looked nervous.
“When I found the messages between Mom and Michael…”
I turned toward her.
“You said you found them six months ago?””
She nodded.
“But I didn’t tell Mom I saw them.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought maybe I was wrong.””
She reached into her jacket pocket.
She pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
“I found this too.””
I took it.
It was a handwritten note.
The writing was Rebecca’s.
My hands went cold.
“What is it?””
Lily looked away.
“Read it.””
I unfolded the paper.
Only one sentence was written.
A sentence that made my entire body freeze.
“If Daniel ever finds out the baby isn’t his, I need Michael to promise he won’t tell him the truth about what happened that night.””
I read it again.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept the words.
This wasn’t a mistake.
This wasn’t confusion.
This was a plan.
I stood up.
“Where did you find this?””
Lily’s voice was quiet.
“In Mom’s old storage box.””
I looked back at the house.
At Rebecca.
At the woman I thought I knew.
The woman who had spent years telling me she loved me.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel.””
I knew immediately.
Michael.
My grip tightened.
“Why are you calling me?””
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Because Rebecca is not telling you the biggest part of the story.””
I looked through the window.
Rebecca was standing inside, watching me.
“What did she leave out?””
Michael took a breath.
Then he said:
“The baby’s DNA test wasn’t the only test she took.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She took another one before that.””
My heart started pounding.
“Another test for what?””
Michael’s answer came quietly.
“For Lily.””
I looked at my daughter.
The world seemed to stop.
“Why would she test Lily?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“Because Rebecca had already started wondering if she had been lied to too.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
“What are you saying?””
A pause.
Then the words came.
“The man Rebecca thought was Lily’s father…”
May you like
Michael whispered.
“He might not be her father either.””
