Chapter 8: The Man Who Was There Before Me

I read the message three times.

Then a fourth.

Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

“The man in the hospital room that night… was me.””

Ethan.

Not a stranger.

Not a distant secret.

Not just the man connected to Rebecca’s hidden messages.

He was there.

The night Lily was born.

I looked at Rebecca.

She looked like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.

The moment when the truth finally became too heavy to carry alone.

“Is it true?””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Rebecca didn’t answer.

“Rebecca.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Lily looked between us.

“Mom?””

Rebecca turned toward her.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Lily shook her head.

“No, don’t apologize yet. Tell me what’s happening.””

Rebecca sat down.

Her hands were trembling.

“The night you were born was complicated.””

Lily laughed bitterly.

“Everything about my life is complicated.””

“Lily…”

“No.””

She looked at her mother.

“I spent my whole life believing one story.””

Her voice cracked.

“And now every person in this room is telling me that story was wrong.””

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Rebecca looked at me.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something.””

I stared at her.

“I don’t know if I want to understand anything anymore.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice rose.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your entire marriage has been a collection of hidden chapters.””

She looked down.

“I know I hurt you.””

“You didn’t just hurt me.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“You hurt her.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I know.””

Lily sat silently.

She looked smaller somehow.

Like all the confidence she had built over the years was disappearing.

I walked over and sat beside her.

She didn’t look at me.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“What if none of this is real?””

My heart broke.

“What do you mean?””

“What if everything I believed about my family is fake?””

I took a breath.

“Lily.””

She looked at me.

“The only thing that was fake was the information people gave you.””

I held her gaze.

“Not the love.””

Her eyes filled.

“But how do I know?””

That question hurt because I understood it.

After everything, trust was the hardest thing to rebuild.

“You don’t have to know everything tonight.””

She wiped her face.

“But I want to.””

I nodded.

“Then we find out.””

She looked at me.

“Together?””

I smiled sadly.

“Always.””

Across the room, Rebecca watched us.

And for a second, I saw regret on her face.

Real regret.

Not fear of being caught.

Pain from seeing what her choices had done.

“Tell us the truth,” Lily said.

Rebecca nodded.

“I will.””

She took a deep breath.

“When you were born, your biological father was supposed to be Michael.””

Lily looked down.

“I know.””

“But before I knew I was pregnant, I had been dealing with problems in my relationship with him.””

Rebecca paused.

“He was unreliable.””

“He left?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you believe he was my father?””

“Because the timing matched.””

I looked at her.

“The same excuse.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I made assumptions.””

“And everyone paid for them.””

“Yes.””

Rebecca looked at Lily.

“When you were born, there were complications.””

“What kind?””

“You needed extra monitoring.””

Lily listened carefully.

“And while I was at the hospital…”

Rebecca stopped.

I could see the memory hurting her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Ethan was there.””

“Why?””

“Because he was the person who brought me to the hospital.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at the phone.

At the message.

The pieces were starting to connect.

“He was there the entire time?””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t Michael come?””

Rebecca looked away.

“He didn’t know.””

“Because you didn’t tell him.””

“Yes.””

Lily closed her eyes.

Another missing piece.

Another person kept away.

“Then what happened?””

Rebecca’s voice became softer.

“After you were born, the doctor asked questions about your father.””

“And?””

“I told him Michael was your father.””

“But you weren’t sure.””

“No.””

Rebecca looked down.

“I wasn’t sure.””

I leaned forward.

“Then why did Ethan say he was involved?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“Because after the birth, there was a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

“The hospital records were mixed.””

Lily frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“The doctor wrote down the wrong information.””

My chest tightened.

“About the father?””

“Yes.””

I looked confused.

“Then why would Ethan be connected?””

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“Because the doctor asked Ethan questions.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan signed some paperwork.””

“Why would he?””

“He thought he was helping.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Lily.

Then Rebecca.

Then the phone.

“Are you saying Ethan might actually be her father?””

Rebecca whispered:

“I don’t know.””

The answer made me angry.

Not because she didn’t know.

Because it was the same uncertainty that had followed us for years.

I stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m done with ‘I don’t know.’”

My voice shook.

“We are going to know.””

Rebecca nodded slowly.

“I agree.””

That surprised me.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

She wiped her tears.

“I should have done this years ago.””

Lily looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Rebecca didn’t answer immediately.

Finally:

“Because I was afraid the truth would take everyone away from me.””

Lily looked at her.

“And did it?””

Rebecca looked around the room.

At me.

At Lily.

At the empty space between us.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

A few minutes later, Ethan arrived.

I didn’t invite him.

He simply appeared at the door.

Which somehow felt appropriate.

Another person entering my life without permission.

Rebecca opened the door.

Ethan stood there looking older than I expected.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had carried this secret for too long.

His eyes moved to me.

“Daniel.””

I didn’t move.

“You have five minutes.””

He nodded.

Fair enough.

He stepped inside.

Lily stared at him.

“You knew?””

Ethan looked at her.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He sighed.

“You’re right.””

He looked at Rebecca.

“She should have told you.””

Rebecca looked down.

Ethan turned back to Lily.

“I never wanted you to grow up thinking your father didn’t want you.””

Her expression changed.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because Rebecca told me.””

Lily looked hurt.

“So everyone knew except me.””

Nobody responded.

Because it was true.

Ethan looked at me.

“I came here because you deserve answers.””

“Start with the DNA test.””

He nodded.

“Rebecca asked me to help her find the truth.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

The same time.

Again.

“What did the results show?””

Ethan looked at Lily.

Then me.

“The test showed Michael wasn’t her father.””

Lily closed her eyes.

“And you?””

Ethan hesitated.

“The results were inconclusive.””

“Inconclusive?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because there was another possibility.””

My heart tightened.

“What possibility?””

Ethan looked directly at me.

“That Daniel might be her biological father.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Lily.

She looked at me.

For the first time all night, there was something different in her eyes.

Hope.

Fear.

Both.

Ethan continued.

“But Rebecca never wanted another test.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

Rebecca started crying.

“Because I was scared.””

I stared.

“Of what?””

She whispered:

“That if you weren’t her father…”

She looked at Lily.

“You would leave.””

The words hit differently.

Because suddenly I understood.

All those years ago, Rebecca wasn’t only hiding a truth from me.

She was hiding from a fear.

A fear that she would lose the one person who stayed.

But fear didn’t excuse what she did.

It only explained it.

I looked at Lily.

Then at Rebecca.

Then Ethan.

“Tomorrow.””

Everyone looked at me.

“We take the test.””

Rebecca nodded.

Lily nodded.

Even Ethan nodded.

Because after years of secrets, there was finally one thing nobody could hide from.

The truth.

But as Ethan turned to leave, his phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I noticed immediately.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

Then slowly handed me the phone.

A message from an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

“You’re looking in the wrong place. Daniel Carter is not the only secret Rebecca buried.””

I looked up.

“Who sent this?””

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Another message arrived.

This time with a picture attached.

A photograph of Rebecca.

Taken years ago.

Before I knew her.

Before Lily.

Before our family.

May you like

And standing beside her in the photo…

was me.
