Chapter 7: The Secret That Connected Them All

“He’s family.””

The words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

They floated in the air between us, impossible to understand.

I stared at Rebecca.

Then at the DNA report in my hand.

Then back at her.

“What does that mean?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

Her silence was becoming a language of its own.

A language I had grown to hate.

“Rebecca.””

She wiped her tears.

“I didn’t know how to explain.””

My jaw tightened.

“You keep saying that.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I held up the report.

“You had a test connecting you to Ethan.””

She looked away.

“You had messages with him.””

I took a breath.

“You knew the baby might not be mine.””

Another breath.

“You found out about Lily’s father.””

I looked at her.

“And now you’re telling me Ethan is family?””

Rebecca sat down slowly.

“I need to tell you the whole story.””

I laughed quietly.

“The whole story?””

My voice broke.

“Do you even know what the whole story is anymore?””

She looked hurt.

But I didn’t apologize.

Not this time.

Because every time I softened, another secret appeared.

Lily walked back into the room.

She looked exhausted.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

She looked at the paper in my hand.

“What is that?””

I looked at Rebecca.

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Ethan is my brother.””

The room went silent.

Lily blinked.

“Your brother?””

Rebecca nodded.

“My half-brother.””

I stared.

“Your half-brother?””

“Yes.””

“And you had an affair with him?””

Rebecca immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“I need you to understand. Ethan and I never had a romantic relationship.””

I looked at the messages.

“The baby?””

“Not his.””

I looked at her.

“You expect me to believe that after everything?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because that part is the truth.””

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

The problem wasn’t just that Rebecca had lied.

The problem was that now even the truth sounded impossible.

Lily crossed her arms.

“Then why did he say things like ‘he still thinks the baby is his’?””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Because he knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

Rebecca took a deep breath.

“The baby’s father wasn’t Ethan.””

She looked at me.

“But it wasn’t you either.””

The words still hurt.

Even though I had heard them before.

Even though the DNA test had confirmed them.

Hearing them again felt like another wound opening.

“Then who?””

Rebecca looked down.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“How is that possible?””

She covered her face.

“Because I made a terrible mistake.””

Lily looked confused.

“What mistake?””

Rebecca looked at her daughter.

And I saw something different in her expression.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Pain.

“The night I got pregnant…”

She swallowed.

“I was drinking.””

My stomach tightened.

“I had been fighting with Daniel.””

I remembered.

We had argued that week.

Not about anything serious.

Just stress.

Bills.

Work.

The pressure of trying to have a child.

“I left the house.””

Rebecca’s voice shook.

“I went to a bar.””

Lily stared.

“You never told me that.””

“I know.””

“Who was there?””

Rebecca looked away.

“I don’t remember everything.””

The room became colder.

“Rebecca.””

She started crying.

“I remember leaving. I remember talking to someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

I felt anger rising.

“You don’t know?””

“I was drunk.””

“And you got pregnant.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily looked horrified.

“Mom…”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“I spent months trying to convince myself the baby was Daniel’s.””

I looked at her.

“And then you took a DNA test.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before he was born.””

The answer hit harder than I expected.

Before he was born.

Before I held him.

Before I told everyone.

Before I built my entire identity around being his father.

“You knew.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I took the test because I was scared.””

“And when you found out?””

She started crying.

“I couldn’t tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because I was already too far in.””

I stared at her.

“Too far in?””

“Yes.””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Every day you loved him more.””

My expression changed.

Because she was right.

I had.

“I watched you put together his crib.””

“I watched you talk to my stomach.””

“I watched you tell everyone you were finally becoming a father.””

Her voice broke.

“And I knew I was about to destroy the happiest thing you had ever felt.””

I looked away.

Because that was the cruelest part.

She knew.

She saw.

She watched.

And she stayed silent.

Lily sat down.

“So where does Ethan fit into this?””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Ethan helped me find answers.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew about my past.””

“What past?””

Rebecca hesitated.

Then said:

“When I was young, my mother had a relationship before she married my father.””

I listened carefully.

“She had Ethan.””

She looked at Lily.

“And later, she had me.””

Lily nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

“But years later, I found out something.””

“What?””

Rebecca’s voice became quiet.

“My mother had lied about Ethan’s father.””

I felt a strange sense of familiarity.

Another secret.

Another person hiding a truth.

“It became a pattern,” Rebecca whispered.

“Everyone in my family hid things.””

I looked at her.

“And you became like them.””

The words hurt her.

But she didn’t argue.

“Yes.””

That honesty surprised me.

“Yes,” she repeated.

“I did.””

For the first time all night, she wasn’t trying to defend herself.

She was admitting it.

“I was afraid of losing people.””

She looked at Lily.

“So I held onto secrets.””

Then me.

“And those secrets destroyed everything anyway.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ethan.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A picture of an old document.

I zoomed in.

My blood ran cold.

It was a hospital record.

From the night Lily was born.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

A note from a doctor.

I read it aloud.

“Mother reported uncertainty regarding biological father.””

Lily froze.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

But there was more.

Below that was another line.

“Possible paternal match: Daniel Carter.””

I looked up.

“What?””

Rebecca stared.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward her.

“Why does this say I might be Lily’s biological father?””

She went pale.

“I don’t know.””

Lily looked between us.

“Wait.””

Her voice shook.

“Are you saying…”

Nobody finished the sentence.

Because suddenly the impossible became possible.

The man who raised Lily might not just be her father in love.

He might actually be her father by blood.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me about this?””

She looked terrified.

“Because I didn’t know.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You knew enough to take tests.””

She looked down.

“But not enough to ask me.””

A tear fell from her face.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another message from Ethan.

This time, only one sentence.

“Daniel, there’s a reason Rebecca never tested you and Lily together.””

My heart started pounding.

I opened the message.

The next line appeared.

“She was afraid the results would prove the truth.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“What truth?””

She didn’t answer.

The message continued.

“The night Lily was born…”

I held my breath.

“Daniel wasn’t the only man who could have been her father.””

I looked at Rebecca.

She looked terrified.

And then Ethan sent the final message.

“The man in the hospital room that night…”

A pause.

May you like

Then the words appeared.

“Was me.””
