Chapter 3: The Night Everything Changed
The question was simple.
The answer destroyed everything.
“Where were you that night?””
I stood in the middle of my living room, staring at Rebecca, waiting for the truth.
Not another explanation.
Not another excuse.
The truth.
The night Ethan mentioned had been burned into my memory for a completely different reason.
It was the night Rebecca told me she was pregnant.
The night I thought my life had finally become the one I always wanted.
I remembered every detail.
The rain tapping against the windows.
The cold coffee sitting untouched on the kitchen counter.
The way Rebecca stood in the doorway with tears in her eyes.
The way my hands shook when she showed me the pregnancy test.
I remembered holding her.
I remembered telling her I loved her.
I remembered believing the happiest moment of my life had arrived.
But now I was wondering if that entire memory had been built on a lie.
Rebecca sat on the couch, staring at the floor.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
“Don’t start with my name. Just answer the question.””
Lily stood near the staircase, frozen.
She looked between us like she was watching two strangers.
“Where were you that night?””
Rebecca wiped her face.
“I was at work.””
I stared at her.
“Ethan says you weren’t.””
She looked up quickly.
“Of course he would say that.””
That response bothered me.
Not because it was wrong.
Because it was too fast.
It sounded prepared.
“Why would he lie?””
Rebecca looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“Did you meet him that night?””
Silence.
A few seconds.
That was all it took.
A few seconds of silence told me more than words ever could.
“Rebecca.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Lily covered her mouth.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“You met him.””
“Yes.””
“The same night you came home and told me you were pregnant?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
I took a step back.
The room felt unfamiliar.
The pictures on the walls.
The furniture we picked together.
The family photos.
Everything looked like a set from a movie about someone else’s life.
“Why?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“I was confused.””
I almost laughed.
“Confused?””
“I had just found out I was pregnant.””
“And you went to see him?””
She started crying harder.
“I needed answers.””
“Answers to what?””
She didn’t respond.
I already knew.
The baby.
She had gone to the other man first.
Not me.
Not her husband.
Him.
Lily walked toward her mother.
“Mom…”
Rebecca looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“But you did.””
The pain in Lily’s voice was different from mine.
Because she wasn’t just discovering an affair.
She was discovering that her mother had spent years hiding something from both of us.
Rebecca reached toward her.
Lily stepped back.
That small movement broke something in the room.
Because Lily had always been the person who defended her mother.
Even when they argued.
Even when they disagreed.
She had always believed Rebecca was the one safe person in her life.
Now she looked lost.
I sat down across from Rebecca.
“Start from the beginning.””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“No more pieces.””
My voice hardened.
“No more things I have to discover myself.””
She stayed silent.
“Tell me everything.””
Rebecca looked at Lily.
Then at me.
Finally, she whispered:
“I met Ethan at work three years ago.””
Three years.
The number hit me immediately.
Before the baby.
Before the pregnancy.
Before all of this.
“Three years?””
“It wasn’t like that at first.””
“Everyone says that.””
She flinched.
“We became friends.””
“Friends who hid messages?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“Friends who met secretly?””
She didn’t answer.
“Friends who had a DNA test done behind my back?””
Tears rolled down her face.
“Yes.””
I leaned back.
I wanted to understand.
I truly did.
But every answer created five more questions.
“Did you love him?””
Rebecca whispered:
“I cared about him.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
Again.
That same answer.
A person who had spent years making choices but somehow still couldn’t name what she felt.
“Did he know you were married?””
“Yes.””
“Did he know about me?””
“Yes.””
“Did he know you were trying to build a family with me?””
She hesitated.
“Yes.””
I nodded slowly.
“Then he knew exactly what he was doing.””
Rebecca looked upset.
“He wasn’t trying to destroy our family.””
I stared at her.
The words shocked me.
Not because she defended him.
Because she still did.
“Rebecca.””
She realized what she had said.
Her expression changed.
“I didn’t mean…”
“No. You did.””
I stood up.
“I spent months thinking I was protecting my family.””
My voice cracked.
“I thought I was building something.””
I looked toward the nursery.
“I sang to him before he was born.””
Rebecca started crying.
“I know.””
“I bought him his first shoes.””
“I know.””
“I stayed awake every night when he was sick.””
“I know.””
“And you knew there was a chance he wasn’t mine.””
She covered her face.
“Yes.””
That one word was almost impossible to hear.
Lily walked over slowly.
“Mom, why didn’t you tell him?””
Rebecca looked at her daughter.
“Because I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Rebecca’s answer came quietly.
“Losing everything.””
Lily shook her head.
“You already did.””
No one spoke.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
A number I didn’t recognize.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Daniel Carter?””
My entire body went tense.
“Yes.””
“This is Ethan.””
Rebecca stood immediately.
“Daniel, don’t—”
I turned away from her.
“Why are you calling me?””
There was a pause.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Because you deserve to hear the truth from someone who isn’t afraid anymore.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She looked terrified.
“What truth?””
His voice lowered.
“Rebecca didn’t just hide the DNA test.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
“She knew before the baby was born.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Rebecca.
“Is that true?””
She said nothing.
“Rebecca?””
Her silence answered.
Ethan continued.
“She found out the possibility before you ever held that baby.””
I felt sick.
The betrayal wasn’t just that she waited.
It was that she had known from the beginning.
“How?””
I asked.
“How did she know?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then said:
“Because she asked me to take a test before she asked you.””
I couldn’t move.
Rebecca started crying.
“Daniel, please listen—”
I held up my hand.
My voice barely came out.
“You went to him first.””
“Please.””
“You went to him first.””
The words repeated in my head.
Not the DNA test.
Not the affair.
That moment.
The moment when she had a choice.
And she chose him.
Ethan spoke again.
“There’s one more thing you need to know.””
I looked at the phone.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Rebecca wasn’t the only person who knew.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Before Ethan could answer, the call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked at Rebecca.
“Who else knew?””
Her face went pale.
“Daniel…”
“Who else knew?””
She looked toward Lily.
And for the first time, I saw something that frightened me more than the affair.
Regret.
Not the regret of being caught.
The regret of a secret finally escaping.
“I need to tell you something about Lily.””
My heart dropped.
I looked at my daughter.
She looked just as confused as I was.
“What about Lily?””
Rebecca’s voice trembled.
“The reason she found the DNA test…”
She stopped.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Was because she was looking for answers about her own father.””
