Chapter 4: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not Rebecca.
Not me.
Not Lily.
The only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the fireplace.
A sound I had heard thousands of times before.
But that night, it felt different.
Like every second was counting down to another piece of my life falling apart.
I looked at Rebecca.
“What did you just say?””
She looked terrified.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was shaking now.
“You don’t get to stop halfway.””
Lily stood near the stairs, confused.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca looked at her daughter.
And that was when I saw it.
The hesitation.
The fear.
The same hesitation she had shown when I asked about Ethan.
The same fear she had shown when the messages appeared.
She wasn’t trying to protect herself anymore.
She was trying to decide how much damage the next truth would cause.
“Mom?”” Lily whispered.
Rebecca looked down.
“I didn’t know how to tell either of you.””
Lily’s face changed.
“Tell us what?””
I stepped closer.
“Rebecca.””
She closed her eyes.
Then she said the words that made the room go cold.
“Lily’s father wasn’t the person she thought he was.””
Lily froze.
“What?””
Rebecca immediately started crying.
“Lily, please sit down.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“No, what are you talking about?””
I watched her face.
The same girl who had walked into my office holding the DNA test.
The same girl who had been brave enough to tell me the truth.
Now she looked like a child again.
Like fourteen-year-old Lily sitting alone at Christmas, afraid to trust another man.
“Mom,” she said quietly.
“Who is my father?””
Rebecca couldn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
Because Lily understood immediately.
She stepped backward.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, you’re not doing this.””
“Lily…”
“Who is he?””
Rebecca wiped her tears.
“His name is Michael.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to Lily.
Her face changed.
“Michael?””
Rebecca nodded.
“He was someone I knew before I met Daniel.””
Lily laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“So my whole life is a lie?””
“No.””
“Yes.””
She pointed toward me.
“You told me Daniel wasn’t my real dad.””
I swallowed.
That sentence hurt.
Not because it was untrue.
Because of the way she said it.
Like she was afraid I would leave.
“I never cared about that.””
She looked at me.
“I know.””
But her voice broke.
“That’s why this hurts.””
I walked toward her.
“Lily…”
She shook her head.
“I need to understand.””
Rebecca stood.
“Your biological father left before you were born.””
“Why?””
“He didn’t know.””
The answer made Lily stop.
“What?””
Rebecca looked away.
“He didn’t know you existed.””
I stared at her.
“You kept a father from his daughter?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was young.””
“So you made the decision for everyone?””
She looked down.
“I was scared.””
That word again.
Scared.
It had become the explanation for every choice she made.
Scared.
Confused.
Didn’t know how.
But every time she said it, someone else paid the price.
Lily sat down slowly.
“My whole life…”
Her voice disappeared.
I wanted to comfort her.
I wanted to tell her she was still my daughter.
That nothing changed.
But I could see something important.
This wasn’t just about me.
She needed to process her own world collapsing.
Rebecca walked toward her.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
Lily looked up.
“When I was twenty?””
“Lily…”
“When I was thirty?””
Her voice grew louder.
“When was the perfect time?””
Rebecca started crying.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
The words landed hard.
Because they were true.
I could see Rebecca knew it.
She sat down across from her daughter.
“I was afraid Michael would take you away.””
“Did he even know about me?””
“No.””
“Because you never told him.””
Rebecca said nothing.
Lily stared at the floor.
“Unbelievable.””
I looked at Rebecca.
“How does this connect to Ethan?””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“Ethan said someone else knew.””
Her expression changed.
Slowly.
Almost invisibly.
But I saw it.
“Rebecca.””
She looked away.
“Who knew?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily spoke.
“I think I know.””
We both looked at her.
She wiped her face.
“The messages.””
“What messages?”” Rebecca asked.
Lily looked at her mother.
“The ones you sent.””
Rebecca went pale.
“You read those?””
“I saw enough.””
“What did they say?””
Lily’s expression hardened.
“They talked about secrets.””
She looked at me.
“About how Mom had been hiding things for years.””
Rebecca stood.
“Lily, stop.””
“No.””
Lily’s voice was stronger now.
“You always told me the truth mattered.””
Rebecca looked like she had been slapped.
“You taught me that.””
The room went silent.
Because that was the cruelest part.
Rebecca had raised a daughter who believed in honesty.
Then spent years proving how easily honesty could be broken.
I looked at Lily.
“What else did you find?””
She hesitated.
Then pulled out her phone.
“There was one message I didn’t understand.””
She opened it.
A conversation with an unknown number.
I leaned closer.
The message was from Rebecca.
“I don’t know how much longer I can keep this from Daniel.””
The reply came from someone else.
“You already kept it from him for years.””
My stomach tightened.
Years.
Not months.
Years.
I looked at Rebecca.
“Who is this?””
She didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Her lips trembled.
“Michael.””
The name hit the room.
Lily stared at her mother.
“You were talking to my father?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
Rebecca looked down.
“Six months.””
Lily’s eyes widened.
“Six months?””
“I found him online.””
“Why?””
Rebecca started crying.
“Because I wanted to know if he was okay.””
Lily laughed bitterly.
“After twenty years?””
“Lily…”
“No.””
She stood up.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””
Rebecca looked destroyed.
But I couldn’t ignore the question in my mind.
“Did Michael know about me?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Did he?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
Lily froze.
“What?””
Rebecca looked at her.
“He knows.””
“When did you tell him?””
“Recently.””
“Recently?””
Lily’s voice shook.
“I spent my entire life wondering why my father didn’t want me.””
Her eyes filled.
“And he didn’t even know I existed.””
Rebecca reached for her.
Lily stepped away.
“Stop.””
The pain in that one word was unbearable.
I had spent years trying to prove to Lily that family wasn’t about blood.
Now Rebecca had forced her to question everything about where she came from.
My phone buzzed.
Again.
This time, it was a voicemail notification.
From Ethan.
I pressed play.
His voice filled the room.
“Daniel, I know Rebecca is telling you about Michael now.””
Rebecca looked terrified.
“But there’s something she’s not telling you.””
I stared at her.
The voicemail continued.
“The reason Rebecca contacted Michael wasn’t because she missed him.””
A pause.
“She contacted him because she was afraid the truth about the baby would come out.””
My heart sank.
“What truth?”” I whispered.
Ethan’s voice continued.
“She thought if you found out about the baby, you would leave.””
Rebecca covered her mouth.
But Ethan wasn’t finished.
“And she was afraid Michael would reveal something too.””
The message ended.
Nobody spoke.
I slowly looked at Rebecca.
“What could Michael reveal?””
Her face had gone completely pale.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She looked toward Lily.
Then toward the nursery.
Then back at me.
And I knew.
Whatever she was about to say was the secret everything else had been protecting.
“I never told you because I was afraid you would hate me.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Tell me.””
Rebecca whispered:
“The night I got pregnant…”
She stopped.
Then took a shaky breath.
“I wasn’t with Ethan.””
The room went silent.
My heart started racing.
“Then who were you with?””
Rebecca looked at Lily.
Then at me.
May you like
And said:
“Michael.””
