Chapter 9: The Nurse Who Kept the Secret

Emily stared at Janet.

"Another patient?""

Janet nodded.

"A week before Laura was admitted, a woman came into the hospital with almost identical symptoms. Dizziness, confusion, nausea. Her chart was eventually marked as a reaction to prescribed medication.""

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"Did she survive?""

"Yes. But she never fully recovered.""

Michael leaned forward.

"What does that have to do with Laura?""

Janet opened the envelope.

Inside were several photocopies of medical records, a handwritten statement, and a small photograph.

She slid the photograph across the table.

Emily picked it up.

A woman in her forties stood beside a hospital bed, smiling weakly.

Behind her was Richard Hale.

Emily frowned.

"That's Richard.""

Janet nodded.

"He visited both patients.""

Michael shook his head.

"Why?""

"Because the second woman worked in his company's accounting department.""

Daniel examined the photograph.

"Do you remember her name?""

"Patricia Moore.""

Michael's face changed.

"Patricia handled payroll for our company.""

Janet nodded.

"She came to me after she became ill. She said someone had asked her to change financial records. When she refused, her medication was suddenly different.""

Michael looked at Emily.

"Richard told me Patricia had resigned because of a family emergency.""

"She didn't resign," Janet replied.

"She was hospitalized.""

Emily looked at the report.

"Was Patricia poisoned too?""

Janet hesitated.

"We couldn't prove it at the time. But the medication she received was not what her doctor had prescribed.""

Daniel examined the paperwork.

"Who administered it?""

Janet pointed to the initials.

"J.B. Those are mine.""

Emily looked up.

"You gave it to her?""

Janet shook her head quickly.

"No. I documented the medication order. Someone changed the chart afterward.""

"Who?""

Janet took a slow breath.

"Another nurse. One who was working under a special instruction from the attending physician.""

Daniel frowned.

"Dr. Samuel Reed?""

Janet nodded.

Michael looked troubled.

"Dr. Reed was respected. He treated Laura for months.""

"I know," Janet said.

"That's why nobody questioned him.""

She looked at Emily.

"Your mother did.""

Emily felt her throat tighten.

"What did she discover?""

Janet opened the handwritten statement.

"Laura realized that the medication listed on her hospital chart didn't match the prescription she'd been taking before admission. She asked me to check it.""

"What did you find?""

"An unauthorized change.""

Michael gripped the armchair.

"Was it dangerous?""

Janet looked at him.

"It could have been.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Was it administered intentionally?""

"I can't prove that. I can only tell you what I witnessed. Laura refused the medication.

Then she asked to speak to Dr. Reed.""

Emily held her breath.

"What happened?""

Janet looked toward the photograph.

"Dr. Reed arrived with Richard Hale.""

Michael sat back.

"Richard was there?""

"Yes. He told Laura that she was confused and needed to rest.""

Emily felt anger rising.

"My mother wasn't confused.""

"I know.""

Janet's eyes filled.

"She was frightened. She asked me to stay in the room. I did. But Richard ordered me out.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Did the doctor support him?""

Janet nodded.

"Dr. Reed said the family needed privacy.""

Michael shook his head.

"I never knew.""

Janet looked at him.

"Richard told Laura you knew everything.""

Emily turned sharply.

"Did Mom believe him?""

Janet nodded.

"She thought her husband had agreed to let them change her treatment.""

Michael covered his face.

"No.""

Janet's voice softened.

"She asked me to tell you that she loved you. She said if something happened, you should never blame yourself.""

Emily began to cry.

Her mother had spent her final hours terrified, believing the people she loved might have abandoned her.

And none of them had told Emily.

"Why didn't you tell my father?"" she asked.

Janet's face crumpled.

"Because Richard came to see me the next morning.""

Michael looked up.

"What did he say?""

"He showed me photographs of my grandchildren leaving school. He knew their names. He knew where my daughter worked.""

Janet's hands shook.

"He said I should think carefully before accusing anyone.""

Daniel quietly placed a recording device on the table.

"Mrs. Brooks, I need you to tell us everything you remember. We can make sure the appropriate authorities receive your statement.""

Janet nodded.

"I've been waiting a long time.""

She handed him the medical records.

Then she reached into the envelope and removed one final document.

It was a handwritten letter.

Emily recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her mother's.

At the top were three words.

*For Michael. Please.*

Michael took it carefully.

His hands trembled as he unfolded the paper.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

Emily watched him.

"What does it say?""

Michael couldn't speak.

Daniel gently took the letter.

"Would you like me to read it?""

Michael nodded.

Daniel began.

Michael,

If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.

I don't know how much longer I have. I don't know who is telling the truth anymore. But I know Richard has been using our financial records without my permission.

I also know Vanessa has been visiting my hospital room when you aren't here.

Emily looked up.

Daniel continued.

She keeps asking about the trust. She keeps asking when Emily will receive the money. Yesterday, she told me that my daughter would never have to worry about money again if I would simply sign a few documents.

Michael closed his eyes.

The letter continued.

I refused.

Please understand that the house and the inheritance are not the most important things I am leaving Emily. I am leaving her the freedom to live without owing anybody her future.

Emily covered her mouth.

Then Daniel read the final paragraph.

*There is something else you must know. Richard has a copy of the original business agreement. If anything happens to me, do not sign anything he puts in front of you.

He will tell you it is for the company. It is not.*

Daniel paused.

The last sentence was written in darker ink.

And Michael, if Vanessa ever becomes part of your family, remember that she knows more about my death than she will ever admit.

Michael lowered his head.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered:

"I let her into our home.""

Emily sat beside him.

"Dad...""

"I let her sit at our table. I let her sleep in your mother's room. I let her tell you that you didn't belong here.""

His voice broke.

"I was so busy trying to hold on to my marriage that I didn't realize I was losing my daughter.""

Emily took his hand.

"You're here now.""

Michael looked at her.

"I should have been here before.""

Daniel spent the next hour documenting Janet's statement and arranging for the hospital records to be transferred to the investigators.

Before they left, Janet stopped Emily at the front door.

"There is something else.""

Emily turned.

"What?""

Janet looked toward Michael and Daniel.

"Your mother asked me to keep a separate envelope. She said the letter wasn't enough.""

Emily felt her heart jump.

"Where is it?""

Janet reached into a cabinet and removed a small metal tin.

Inside was a folded document wrapped in plastic.

"I hid it in my home because I was afraid someone might search my workplace.""

Emily opened it.

The document was a copy of a business agreement.

It listed Richard Hale and Michael Carter as equal partners in Carter Development.

But beneath their names was a third party.

A company called Meridian Holdings.

Emily recognized it immediately.

The same company that had received money from Laura's estate.

She looked at Michael.

"What is this?""

He took the paper.

His face darkened.

"This is a partnership agreement I never signed.""

Daniel examined the final page.

"There's an additional clause.""

Michael leaned closer.

Daniel read it aloud.

"In the event of the death or incapacitation of either principal, the controlling interest in the company shall transfer to Meridian Holdings.""

Michael shook his head.

"That clause wasn't in our original agreement.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Then somebody altered it.""

Emily examined the signature section.

Her father's name was there.

Below it was Richard's.

And beside the signature line was a witness signature.

*Vanessa Carter.*

Emily stared.

"This is why she needed the inheritance.""

Michael looked up.

"How?""

"She wasn't just taking the money. She was using it to finance the company that would take control of your business.""

Daniel slowly nodded.

"That would explain the transfers and the loan application.""

Michael looked sick.

"Richard wanted control of Carter Development.""

Janet spoke quietly.

"And Laura found out.""

Emily turned toward her.

"Is that why Mom was poisoned?""

Janet looked at her.

"I don't know whether the purpose was to kill her. But I know she was trying to stop someone from taking control of her family's assets.""

Michael closed his eyes.

For eleven years, he had believed Laura's final illness had simply become complicated.

Now he was looking at a document suggesting that her death had been followed by an elaborate financial takeover.

Daniel placed the agreement inside his folder.

"We have enough to justify a full investigation. I need both of you to understand that this may become much bigger than the inheritance.""

Michael nodded.

"Whatever it takes.""

An hour later, Daniel received a call from Detective Grant.

He stepped into the hallway to answer.

When he returned, his expression was grave.

"Richard Hale has been located.""

Michael stood.

"Where?""

"At his office.""

"Did they question him?""

"Not yet.""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he added, "There's a problem.""

Emily frowned.

"What problem?""

"Richard reported that somebody broke into his office last night.""

Michael's face hardened.

"What was taken?""

"The original partnership agreement. His personal financial records. And a locked file containing correspondence from 2015.""

Emily looked at the document in Daniel's hand.

"Someone wanted the same papers we just found.""

Daniel nodded.

"There's more. The security cameras captured a person entering the building shortly after midnight.""

"Who?""

Daniel turned his laptop around.

The footage showed a woman wearing a dark coat and a baseball cap.

She walked directly to Richard's office.

Even with the poor lighting, Emily recognized the way she moved.

She recognized the shape of her face.

Her voice caught.

"That's Claire.""

Michael turned toward the woman.

Claire stood near the hallway entrance.

Her face went white.

"No," she whispered.

Emily looked at her.

"Claire?""

Claire stepped backward.

"I didn't take anything.""

Daniel closed the laptop.

"I haven't accused you of anything.""

Claire's breathing became shallow.

Michael moved toward her.

"Why were you at Richard's office?""

She looked at the floor.

"I went there to retrieve something.""

"What?""

"Something your mother gave me.""

Emily's voice shook.

"What did she give you?""

Claire swallowed.

"A second recording.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Where is it?""

Claire reached into her purse and removed a small black memory card.

She placed it on the table.

"Your mother recorded Richard and Vanessa discussing what they planned to do after she died.""

Michael stared at the card.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because I was afraid.""

Emily looked at her.

"Afraid of what?""

Claire's eyes filled.

"Because I was in the room when they made the plan.""

Michael stepped forward.

"What plan?""

Claire shook her head.

Then she said:

"They weren't planning to steal Laura's inheritance after she died.""

Emily felt her blood run cold.

"What do you mean?""

Claire looked directly at her.

"They were planning to make sure she died before she could change the trust.""

Daniel reached for the memory card.

"Where did you get this?""

Claire closed her fingers around it.

"From Laura. The night before she died.""

Michael stared at her.

"Why did you wait eleven years?""

Claire's voice broke.

"Because the recording contains something else. Something that could send an innocent person to prison.""

Emily felt the floor shift beneath her.

"Who?""

Claire looked at Michael.

Then she whispered:

"Your father was the one who gave Laura the medication.""

Michael went completely still.

"No.""

May you like

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I saw him do it.""
