Chapter 7: The Evidence in Vanessa's Car

For several seconds, Emily couldn't move.

The words on the hospital report seemed to blur together.

*Possible poisoning. Patient unable to identify substance.*

She read them again.

Then she looked at her father.

"Mom was poisoned?""

Michael shook his head, but his expression suggested he no longer trusted his own memories.

"I don't know.""

"How could you not know?""

"Because nobody told me!""

His voice cracked.

He turned away, pressing both hands against his forehead.

Claire sat on the edge of a metal chair, staring at the little handwritten note she'd carried for eleven years.

Daniel closed the document folder.

"We need to let the police examine everything. These records could be original evidence.""

Emily clutched the photograph of her mother.

"What if they disappear again?""

"They won't," Daniel assured her.

"I'll make sure every document is photographed, logged, and properly preserved.""

Michael looked at the hospital report.

"Who wrote this?""

Daniel examined the lower corner.

"There's a physician's name, but the signature is difficult to read.""

Emily leaned closer.

"Can you make it out?""

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

"Dr. Samuel Reed.""

Claire immediately looked up.

"Dr. Reed?""

"You know him?"" Michael asked.

Claire nodded slowly.

"He was Laura's attending physician during her first hospital admission.""

Michael stared at her.

"Why didn't you mention him before?""

"Because I didn't know this report existed.""

Claire took the paper and examined the initials beneath the doctor's name.

Then her face changed.

"That's not his signature.""

Daniel frowned.

"Are you certain?""

"Yes. I handled Laura's appointments. I saw Dr. Reed sign documents dozens of times.""

Michael took a step closer.

"Then who signed it?""

Claire pointed to the small initials beside the notation.

"Someone called J.B.""

Daniel wrote them down.

"Do you recognize those initials?""

Claire shook her head.

"No. But I remember something about that night.""

Emily moved closer.

"What?""

"Laura asked me to find her purse. She said something important was inside it.""

Michael frowned.

"Her purse was at the hospital.""

"I know. I searched the room, the waiting area, and the nurse's station. It was gone.""

Emily's fingers tightened around the photograph.

"What was inside?""

"Her medication list, some personal documents, and a little notebook she carried everywhere.""

"Did you ever find it?""

"No.""

Daniel placed the report back in the folder.

"Then we have at least two missing items and a medical record that appears to have been altered.""

A siren sounded somewhere outside.

Michael looked toward the storage facility entrance.

"Let's go.""

The police station was less than fifteen minutes away.

By the time they arrived, Daniel had already spoken with the investigating detective. The officer was waiting in a small interview room with a file open on the table.

Detective Olivia Grant introduced herself.

She was in her early forties, with short dark hair and a calm expression that made Emily feel she was being examined more carefully than she wanted.

"Mr. Carter, I understand your wife was involved in a car accident.""

Michael nodded.

"Where is she?""

"At St. Mary's Hospital. Her injuries are not life-threatening.""

Emily released a breath.

Despite everything Vanessa had done, hearing that she might be seriously hurt still unsettled her.

Detective Grant continued.

"We found several documents in her vehicle. Some appear to relate to a financial investigation. Others concern a medical incident involving Laura Carter.""

Michael stiffened.

"Did she say anything?""

"Not much. She was disoriented when paramedics arrived.""

Daniel placed his folder on the table.

"We recovered additional documents from a storage unit. Some of them appear to be connected.""

Detective Grant looked at him.

"Then I want copies of everything.""

"Of course.""

Emily sat beside her father.

"What caused the accident?""

The detective checked her notes.

"According to the initial report, the vehicle left the road and struck a concrete barrier. There were no other vehicles directly involved.""

"Was Vanessa alone?""

"Yes.""

Emily glanced at her father.

"Did she have the medical records with her?""

"Some were in an envelope on the passenger seat. A second envelope was found beneath the driver's seat.""

Detective Grant opened a photograph.

It showed a stack of yellowed hospital papers.

One page was visible.

Emily recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her mother's.

She leaned forward.

"That's Laura's writing.""

The detective enlarged the photograph.

At the bottom of the page was a short sentence.

If anything happens to me, ask Richard Hale why he visited my room.

Michael went completely still.

Emily turned.

"Dad?""

He stared at the paper as though he'd seen a ghost.

"Richard was my business partner.""

Daniel's expression sharpened.

"Richard Hale?""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

Detective Grant made a note.

"Was he involved in Laura's care?""

Michael swallowed.

"He visited her once. Maybe twice. I don't remember exactly.""

Claire looked at him.

"Three times.""

Michael turned.

"What?""

"I remember because Laura complained after the third visit. She said she didn't want him coming into her room anymore.""

Michael shook his head.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because you were the one who introduced him to her.""

Emily looked between them.

"Who is Richard Hale?""

Michael leaned back.

"He built Carter Development with me. We started with a small construction company and eventually expanded into commercial property.""

"Is he still your partner?""

"He's been my business partner for twenty years.""

Detective Grant closed the file.

"I'd like his contact information.""

Michael gave it to her.

Then he hesitated.

"Detective, what exactly did you find in Vanessa's car?""

She removed a second photograph.

This one showed a small envelope with a handwritten label.

*Laura — Hospital, October 19.*

Emily recognized the date.

The night her mother had been taken to the hospital.

The detective explained that the envelope contained photocopies of medical records, a photograph of Laura in her hospital bed, and a handwritten statement.

Emily pointed at the statement.

"Can I read it?""

"Not yet. We're still documenting the evidence.""

Emily nodded reluctantly.

Detective Grant then looked directly at Michael.

"There's another issue. The vehicle's onboard system recorded an unusual stop less than twenty minutes before the accident.""

Michael frowned.

"Where?""

"Near an office building on Peachtree Street.""

Daniel recognized the address.

"That's where Vantage Property Group is registered.""

The detective nodded.

"We also recovered a second phone from the vehicle. It doesn't appear to belong to Mrs. Carter.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Whose phone?""

"We're still checking.""

Emily felt a cold sensation spread through her chest.

"Could someone have been in the car with her?""

"There's no evidence of that yet.""

Detective Grant gathered her papers.

"I've arranged for you to speak with Vanessa once the hospital clears her for questioning. But I need you to understand something.""

She looked at Emily.

"People sometimes keep evidence for reasons that have nothing to do with innocence. Finding these records in her possession doesn't automatically tell us why she kept them.""

Emily nodded.

She understood.

Vanessa might have been protecting herself.

Or protecting someone else.

St. Mary's Hospital smelled of disinfectant and cold coffee.

Vanessa lay in a private room with a bandage across her forehead. Her left arm rested in a sling, and a heart monitor beeped quietly beside her bed.

When Michael entered, she turned her face toward the window.

"Well," she said.

"You've come to see whether I'm dead.""

Michael remained near the door.

"No.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"You could at least pretend to care.""

Emily stepped into the room.

Vanessa's eyes moved toward her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

"Of course you brought her.""

Michael pulled a chair closer.

"The police found your car.""

Vanessa's expression barely changed.

"They took my things?""

"They found Laura's medical records.""

Her eyes flickered.

Only for a moment.

But Emily saw it.

"Why were they in your car?"" Michael asked.

Vanessa adjusted the blanket.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"There's a report suggesting Laura may have been poisoned.""

Vanessa looked toward the window.

"She was sick.""

"That's not what the report says.""

"Your wife was dying, Michael. People get confused when they're sick.""

Emily stepped closer.

"Who poisoned her?""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Nobody.""

"Then why was the report hidden in your car?""

"Because I kept old documents. Is that a crime now?""

Michael's voice dropped.

"Who is Richard Hale?""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Then she looked away.

"Why are you asking me about Richard?""

"Because Laura wrote his name on the report.""

Vanessa was silent.

Michael stood.

"Did Richard visit her in the hospital?""

"I don't remember.""

"Did he?""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

"You have no idea what you're getting into.""

Emily stepped toward the bed.

"My mother died believing she couldn't trust the people around her. I want to know why.""

Vanessa looked directly at her.

"You want answers? Fine. Your father knows more than he's telling you.""

Michael froze.

"Don't.""

Vanessa gave a small laugh.

"You want everyone to believe I did this alone.""

"What are you talking about?""

She leaned back against the pillow.

"Ask Michael what happened the night Laura fell.""

Emily turned toward her father.

Michael's face had gone pale.

Vanessa looked at Emily again.

"Ask him why he wasn't at the hospital when your mother needed him most.""

Emily stared at her father.

"Where were you?""

Michael opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, a nurse entered to check Vanessa's monitor.

"We need to keep the patient calm.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then she whispered something Emily almost missed.

"Richard wasn't the only one in that room.""

Michael stopped breathing.

Emily leaned closer.

"Who else was there?""

Vanessa opened her eyes.

She looked toward the doorway.

May you like

Then she said:

"Your father.""
