Chapter 1: The Recording She Never Expected to See
"Marcus, I think we should talk about this privately.""
My voice sounded fragile. Almost desperate.
But Marcus wasn't looking at me anymore.
His attention was fixed on the small screen of his phone, where a blue loading circle continued spinning.
Ethan stood near the staircase, one hand pressed against his bleeding lip.
For the first time that evening, he looked hopeful.
And that terrified me.
"Come on, Dad," he said.
"Just watch it.""
Marcus frowned.
"I said there's no need.""
"Then why are you afraid to?""
I tightened my fingers around Marcus's sleeve.
"Darling, please. He's upset. He doesn't know what he's saying.""
Ethan let out a bitter laugh.
"That's funny. You didn't seem worried about my feelings when you were screaming that I attacked you.""
"Ethan!"" Marcus snapped.
"What? Are you going to hit me again?""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
I lowered my eyes, pretending to tremble.
Inside, I was calculating.
The camera was installed three weeks ago. Marcus had mentioned it during dinner, but I hadn't paid much attention. I assumed it was connected to the security system in his office, not the dining room.
I had made a terrible mistake.
"Marcus," I whispered, "I don't want to watch that awful scene again.""
He looked at me.
"Vanessa, I need to know what happened.""
"I already told you.""
"I know.""
"Then believe me.""
His expression softened for half a second.
That was usually enough.
A gentle touch. A trembling voice. A few tears.
Marcus had always been a man who wanted to protect the people he loved. His first wife had died unexpectedly, and for years he had carried the guilt of not being there when she needed him.
I had learned that weakness early in our relationship.
I had never needed to compete with his late wife.
I only needed to convince him that his son was becoming another person he might lose.
"Baby," I whispered, "I'm scared of what Ethan might do if you keep defending him.""
Ethan stared at me.
"Are you serious?""
I flinched.
Marcus immediately turned.
"Watch your tone.""
"She's lying to you!""
"Enough!""
The phone vibrated.
The loading circle disappeared.
A video appeared on the screen.
Marcus pressed play.
The dining room appeared from a slightly elevated angle.
The timestamp read 8:43 PM.
I recognized the exact moment.
Ethan was standing on one side of the table. The money was arranged in neat bundles. The white envelope sat beside it.
Then my recorded voice filled the room.
"Three hundred thousand dollars. It's all here.""
Ethan's recorded voice followed.
"Where did you get that?""
Marcus leaned closer.
On the screen, I smiled.
"Does it matter?""
Ethan looked toward the staircase.
"Does Dad know you're doing this?""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Marcus didn't move.
The video continued.
"Your father doesn't need to know everything.""
Then came the sentence that made my stomach turn.
"Take the money and disappear.""
Marcus paused the recording.
Slowly, he looked at me.
"What is this?""
I forced a confused expression.
"Marcus?""
He pointed at the phone.
"Why are you offering my son three hundred thousand dollars?""
"I wasn't offering it to him.""
"That's exactly what you said.""
"He misunderstood me.""
Ethan gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
"She told me to take it and leave.""
Marcus looked back at the screen.
"Keep playing.""
My fingers went cold.
The recording continued.
It showed Ethan refusing the money. It showed him stepping away when I reached for his phone.
It showed him saying, "Don't touch me.""
Then the most damaging moment arrived.
My hands grabbed the front of my red dress.
I tore the fabric.
Marcus's mouth fell slightly open.
On the screen, I knocked over the glass.
I slapped my own cheek.
Then I screamed.
"Help! Somebody help me!""
The recording caught everything.
Every detail.
Every movement.
Every second of my performance.
Marcus stopped the video.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was so complete that I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
I swallowed.
"That doesn't show everything.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"What else could it possibly show?""
I turned toward Marcus.
"Darling, you have to understand. I was trying to scare him into leaving. He had been threatening me for weeks.""
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"Threatening you?""
"Yes.""
"Where's the evidence?""
I blinked.
"Excuse me?""
"Messages. Emails. Anything.""
I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.
Ethan wiped his lip.
"She doesn't have any. Because I never threatened her.""
Marcus looked at the money scattered across the floor.
"Where did the three hundred thousand dollars come from?""
I forced myself to breathe.
"From my personal account.""
"Why?""
"Because I wanted to settle things with Ethan.""
"Settle what things?""
I looked at Ethan.
He was watching me with an expression I couldn't read.
Then Marcus said something I hadn't expected.
"Did you know about the money in my office?""
My head snapped toward him.
"What?""
"The missing cash.""
Ethan frowned.
"Dad?""
Marcus picked up one of the bundles.
"Two weeks ago, I discovered that three hundred thousand dollars had disappeared from the emergency safe in my study.""
My mouth went dry.
He looked directly at me.
"Now I find the exact amount on this table.""
I tried to laugh.
"That's a coincidence.""
"Is it?""
"Marcus, you know how much money I have.""
"Then show me the withdrawal.""
I stared at him.
He held out his hand.
"Your bank statement, Vanessa.""
I stepped back.
"Are you seriously questioning me in front of your son?""
"I'm asking you a question.""
"After everything I've been through tonight?""
Ethan shook his head.
"Unbelievable.""
I turned on him.
"Shut up!""
The words came out before I could stop them.
Marcus stared at me.
I immediately covered my mouth.
"I... I'm sorry. I'm just overwhelmed.""
Ethan looked at his father.
"That's the woman you married.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Both of you, stop.""
Then he replayed the final seconds of the recording.
This time, he turned the volume up.
Just before the glass shattered, the camera captured something I hadn't noticed.
My reflection appeared in the polished cabinet behind me.
And in that reflection, I wasn't crying.
I was smiling.
Not a frightened smile.
Not a nervous smile.
A deliberate, satisfied smile.
Marcus froze the image.
His eyes remained on the screen.
Then he looked at me.
"Vanessa.""
I couldn't answer.
"Look at me.""
I raised my eyes.
He spoke slowly.
"Why were you smiling?""
My throat tightened.
"I wasn't.""
He turned the phone toward me.
"Then explain this.""
For the first time in eighteen months, I had no answer ready.
Ethan stepped closer.
"There's something else, Dad.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
Ethan pointed at the security application.
"That's not the only camera in this house.""
My stomach dropped.
"What do you mean?"" Marcus asked.
Ethan looked directly at me.
"Mom's old bedroom has one, too.""
Marcus frowned.
"Why would there be a camera in there?""
"Because I installed it.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Ethan continued.
"And it recorded something last Tuesday.""
May you like
He looked at me.
"Something you probably don't want Dad to see.""
