Chapter 9: The Daughter Who Married Her Own Family
Nobody spoke.
Marcus looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
Then back at the photograph.
"That's not possible.""
Robert nodded slowly.
"I understand.""
"Vanessa is twenty-eight.""
"Yes.""
"Laura died seven years ago.""
"That's what you were told.""
Marcus's expression changed.
"What are you saying?""
Robert looked at him.
"Laura gave birth to triplets twenty-eight years ago. Olivia, Ethan, and Vanessa.""
Ethan took a step backward.
I felt my throat tighten.
Marcus shook his head.
"No. Vanessa's father was Robert Hayes.""
Robert nodded.
"Biologically, yes. But Laura was her mother.""
Ethan stared at me.
"You're saying she's our sister?""
Robert didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Marcus looked as if he might fall.
He reached for the back of a chair.
"Why didn't I know?""
Robert lowered his eyes.
"Because your mother arranged for the three children to be separated. She wanted to protect the Cole family's reputation.""
Marcus's voice broke.
"And Laura?""
"Laura knew about all three.""
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
"She tried.""
Robert removed another photograph.
It showed Laura holding three babies.
Marcus took it.
His hands shook.
"Where was this taken?""
"At the private clinic where she gave birth.""
Marcus stared at the picture.
"She looks happy.""
Robert nodded.
"She was.""
He pointed to the three babies.
"Olivia was the first. Ethan was the second. Vanessa was the third.""
Ethan looked at me.
"Then why did you grow up with Robert?""
Robert answered.
"Because I took Vanessa.""
Marcus looked up sharply.
"You took her?""
"Laura begged me to protect her.""
"From whom?""
Robert hesitated.
"From your mother.""
Marcus shook his head.
"My mother was a difficult woman, but she wouldn't steal three children.""
Robert's expression hardened.
"She didn't steal them herself. She paid people to do it.""
He opened another folder.
Inside were hospital invoices, adoption records, and payment receipts.
Marcus examined them.
His face grew paler.
One receipt showed a transfer of money from his mother's private account.
Another showed payment to a medical consultant.
The final document contained a handwritten instruction.
Separate the children. One must remain with the Cole family. The other two must not be traceable.
Marcus looked at Robert.
"Who wrote this?""
Robert pointed to the bottom.
"Your mother.""
Marcus dropped the paper.
Ethan picked it up.
"Grandma did this?""
Robert nodded.
"She wanted control over the family inheritance. She believed that if Laura's children were raised separately, nobody could challenge her plans.""
Marcus looked toward me.
"Then why did you come back?""
I laughed bitterly.
"Because my father finally told me the truth.""
Robert looked at me.
"I told you the truth years ago.""
"You told me pieces.""
"I told you Laura was your mother.""
"You told me Marcus had ruined our family!""
Robert's expression tightened.
"Because I believed it.""
I turned toward Marcus.
"Do you know what it was like growing up without knowing who I was?""
Marcus stared.
"Do you know what it was like watching other children celebrate birthdays with their families while I had nothing?""
My voice shook.
"My father told me the Coles destroyed everything. He said you had money, influence, and a perfect family while we had been left with nothing.""
Robert lowered his head.
I continued.
"Then I found out you were still alive. I found out you had two children. I found out Laura had loved you.""
Marcus looked at me.
"And you decided to punish me.""
I laughed.
"I decided to take back what should have been ours.""
Ethan shook his head.
"By framing me?""
"By protecting myself.""
"By stealing from Dad?""
"Your father had more money than he could ever spend!""
Marcus's voice became cold.
"That money was mine.""
I looked at him.
"And the family was mine too.""
He stared.
For a moment, the room became painfully quiet.
Then Marcus asked the question I had feared most.
"Did you know Ethan was your brother when you started targeting him?""
I looked away.
"Yes.""
Ethan's face crumpled.
"You knew?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
He stepped backward.
"All those times you told Dad I was dangerous...""
"I was trying to get you out of the way.""
"You told my friends I was unstable.""
"You were difficult.""
"You tried to buy me off.""
I said nothing.
Ethan wiped his eyes.
"You destroyed my relationship with my father.""
Marcus looked down.
Ethan turned toward him.
"And you believed her.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
Ethan's voice broke.
"You hit me.""
Marcus looked at his son.
"I know.""
"You didn't even ask me what happened.""
"I know.""
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know how to forgive that.""
Marcus's eyes filled.
"You don't have to forgive me tonight.""
Then he reached for his son's hand.
"But I will spend the rest of my life making it right.""
I watched them.
The family I had spent eighteen months trying to destroy was standing together.
And I was outside it.
Suddenly, the front door opened.
A woman entered.
She was in her late sixties, wearing a beige coat and carrying a small handbag.
Daniel immediately stood.
"Patricia?""
The woman looked around.
Then her eyes found Robert.
"You shouldn't have come back.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Aunt Patricia.""
She looked at him.
"Marcus.""
He held up the hospital documents.
"Is this true?""
Patricia's face crumpled.
"Please.""
"Did you separate Laura's children?""
She began crying.
"I was trying to protect the family.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Which family?""
Patricia looked at me.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the photograph on the table.
"Your mother believed the children would destroy the inheritance.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Children?""
"Laura had made plans to leave you.""
"She never wanted to leave me!""
Patricia looked down.
"She wanted to tell you about Robert.""
Marcus went pale.
Patricia continued.
"Your mother was afraid you'd choose Laura over the family business.""
"So she took my children?""
"She thought she was protecting you.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Where is the third child?""
Patricia looked at me.
I felt my heart stop.
She whispered:
"Vanessa was never supposed to know.""
I laughed.
"Know what?""
Patricia reached into her handbag.
She removed a small envelope.
"I kept this for twenty-eight years.""
Marcus took it.
The envelope contained a photograph and a hospital record.
He examined the photograph first.
It showed Laura holding a newborn baby.
On the back, in her handwriting, were the words:
My little girl. Vanessa. I hope one day you find your way home.
Marcus began crying.
Then he opened the hospital record.
His expression changed.
"Wait.""
Ethan stepped closer.
"What?""
Marcus looked at Patricia.
"Why does this say Vanessa was discharged to a different family?""
Patricia nodded.
"Because she was.""
Robert frowned.
"What?""
Patricia looked at him.
"You never took Vanessa home.""
Robert stared.
"What are you talking about?""
Patricia began crying harder.
"You were given another baby.""
The room went silent.
Robert stepped forward.
"No.""
Patricia nodded.
"Yes.""
She looked at me.
"Vanessa was raised by the Hayes family, but Robert wasn't her biological father.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Marcus looked at the record.
Then at me.
"Who was?""
Patricia swallowed.
And answered:
"Marcus.""
The world stopped.
Ethan stared at his father.
Robert staggered backward.
I couldn't breathe.
Patricia continued.
"Laura was already pregnant with Marcus's child when she met Robert. Vanessa is Marcus's biological daughter.""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you tell everyone she belonged to Robert?""
"Because your mother arranged it.""
Robert covered his mouth.
Marcus looked at me.
His expression was beyond anger.
It was devastation.
I stared at him.
The man I had married.
The man whose money I had tried to steal.
The man I had spent eighteen months manipulating.
Was my biological father.
And suddenly, the three hundred thousand dollars on the dining room floor seemed like the smallest crime I had committed.
Then Patricia placed one final document on the table.
"There's something else.""
Marcus looked at her.
"What?""
She pointed to the signature.
"Laura signed a trust agreement before she died.""
Marcus picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at me.
The document named three beneficiaries.
Olivia.
Ethan.
And Vanessa.
But beneath their names was one condition.
*The inheritance would only be released when all three children were reunited and the truth of their parentage was established.*
Patricia whispered:
"Your mother never wanted you to lose your children, Marcus.""
She looked at me.
"She wanted them to find each other.""
Then she turned toward the front door.
"And Vanessa, there's someone else outside.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
Patricia's voice trembled.
"Your real mother.""
Marcus dropped the document.
Because the woman standing outside wasn't dead.
May you like
Laura Cole was alive.
And she had heard everything.
