Chapter 1: The Lie That Destroyed My Family

“Your own son attacked me, Daniel! Look at what he did!””
My stepmother screamed those words while lying on the living room floor, her red dress torn open and her hair deliberately tangled.
I was fifteen years old.
And I was about to discover that sometimes, the person who is supposed to protect you can become the person you need protection from.
My name is Jaylen. I lived with my father, Daniel, and my stepmother, Melissa, in a large two-story house in a quiet neighborhood outside Columbus, Ohio.
My mother had died when I was nine. After that, my father became quieter, more distant, and increasingly obsessed with work. When he married Melissa three years later, I tried my best to accept her.
At first, she acted like the perfect stepmother.
She packed my lunches, asked about my schoolwork, and called me sweetheart whenever my father was around.
But when he wasn't watching, everything changed.
She criticized the way I ate, complained about my clothes, and constantly reminded me that I was lucky she had agreed to live with someone else's child.
Whenever I tried telling my father, Melissa would suddenly become emotional.
She would lower her eyes, wipe away imaginary tears, and whisper, "I'm only trying to build a relationship with Jaylen. I don't know why he hates me.""
And my father always believed her.
"Jaylen, she's your stepmother," he would say.
"You need to show her some respect.""
So I learned to stay quiet.
I thought keeping the peace would make things easier.
I was wrong.
That Friday afternoon, I came home from school earlier than usual because my last class had been canceled.
The house was strangely quiet.
I dropped my backpack beside the staircase and headed toward the kitchen.
Melissa was standing in the living room, wearing a bright red dress. She was holding her phone and speaking in a low voice.
When she noticed me, she immediately ended the call.
"You're home early," she said.
"School ended early.""
She looked me up and down.
"Your father isn't home yet.""
"I know. I wasn't looking for him.""
Her lips tightened.
"Watch your attitude, Jaylen.""
I sighed and reached for my backpack.
Then she stepped directly into my path.
"Actually, there's something we need to discuss.""
"What?""
She folded her arms.
"Your father and I have been talking about sending you to a boarding school.""
I froze.
"What?""
"You're becoming difficult to manage. Maybe some distance would be good for everyone.""
"I don't want to leave my school.""
"Nobody asked what you wanted.""
I stared at her.
"Why are you doing this?""
Her expression changed.
For a moment, the fake sweetness disappeared completely.
"Because, Jaylen, this house would be much better without you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"You're not my mother.""
The moment those words left my mouth, I knew I had made a mistake.
Melissa's eyes narrowed.
She stepped closer.
"Say that again.""
I backed away.
"I didn't mean—"
"No. Go ahead. Say it.""
"I just want to go upstairs.""
She suddenly glanced toward the staircase.
Then she looked at the small security camera mounted above the hallway.
Something strange happened.
She smiled.
It wasn't her usual polite smile.
It was cold.
Calculated.
And before I could ask what was funny, she grabbed the front of her red dress with both hands.
"What are you doing?"" I asked.
She didn't answer.
Instead, she pulled hard.
RIIIP!
The fabric split from her chest toward her thighs.
I stared at her in disbelief.
Then she reached up, violently messed up her hair, and scratched her own arm with her fingernails.
"Melissa?""
She looked directly into my eyes.
Then she smiled again.
A wicked, terrifying smile.
"You're going to regret disrespecting me.""
Before I could move, she threw herself backward onto the living room floor.
She screamed so loudly that I jumped.
"HELP! DANIEL! HELP ME!""
I stood frozen.
"What are you doing?!""
She began crying, covering her face with both hands.
"GET AWAY FROM ME! PLEASE!""
My father's footsteps thundered down the stairs.
"What happened?""
Daniel appeared at the bottom of the staircase, still wearing his office shirt. His tie hung loosely around his neck.
He looked at Melissa.
Then at her torn dress.
Then at me.
His expression transformed.
"JAYLEN!""
"Dad, I didn't—"
"What did you do to her?""
"Nothing! She tore her own dress!""
Melissa let out another sob.
"Daniel, I was only asking him to calm down. He started shouting at me. Then he grabbed me!""
"That's a lie!"" I cried.
My father rushed toward her.
"Are you hurt?""
Melissa shook her head dramatically.
"I'm fine. I'm fine. Just please don't let him come near me.""
I stared at her.
She was acting so convincingly that even I might have believed her if I hadn't watched her tear the dress herself.
"Dad, please listen to me. She did this on purpose.""
Daniel stood up.
"Enough!""
"Look at her hands! She ripped the dress herself!""
"Don't you dare call her a liar!""
"BUT SHE IS LYING!""
The slap came so quickly that I didn't even see his hand move.
SMACK!
My head snapped sideways.
I stumbled backward and fell against the edge of the coffee table before sliding onto the carpet.
For several seconds, everything sounded distant.
My cheek burned.
My ears rang.
I touched my face and looked up at the man who had just hit me.
My father.
The same man who used to carry me on his shoulders at the park.
The same man who promised my mother he would always protect me.
"Get up," he ordered.
I couldn't move.
"Dad...""
"Don't call me that when you're behaving like this.""
My throat tightened.
Melissa slowly sat up behind him.
And that's when I saw it.
She was smiling.
Not crying.
Not frightened.
Smiling.
She even gave me a tiny wink when my father turned toward the staircase to retrieve his phone.
I felt something inside me break.
Then I noticed the security camera above the hallway.
The little black lens was pointed directly toward the living room.
I wiped my tears.
"Dad.""
He ignored me.
"DAD!""
He turned angrily.
"What now?""
I pointed upward.
"The camera.""
He frowned.
"What about it?""
"It recorded everything. Please check it. I swear I didn't touch her.""
For the first time, Daniel hesitated.
He pulled out his phone and opened the home security application.
Melissa immediately stopped crying.
Her eyes moved toward the screen.
Then her face went pale.
"Daniel, don't.""
My father looked at her.
"What?""
"There's no reason to watch it.""
"Why not?""
She scrambled to her feet and grabbed his wrist with both hands.
"Please. I don't want to relive what happened.""
Daniel pulled his arm away.
"Melissa, move.""
She shook her head.
"Daniel, please trust me.""
He looked at her for several seconds.
Then he looked at me.
I was still sitting on the floor, one hand pressed against my burning cheek.
"Let's see what happened," he said.
He touched the recording.
The screen loaded.
A timestamp appeared.
Then the video began.
And Melissa's voice filled the room.
But it wasn't the voice of a frightened woman.
It was something else entirely.
Something that made my father's fingers stop moving.
Because the recording didn't just show her tearing her dress.
It showed her taking something out of her purse before I even walked into the living room.
Something she had clearly planned to use against me.
And when my father zoomed in on the object, his face went completely white.
"Melissa..."" he whispered.
"Where did you get that?""
She said nothing.
May you like
For the first time since she entered our family, my stepmother looked genuinely afraid.
And I had no idea why.
