Chapter 9: The Tape That Exposed Everything

The storage facility was almost deserted when we arrived.

It was 2:36 a.m.

Rows of metal doors stretched beneath harsh white lights. The air smelled of dust, old cardboard, and damp concrete.

Marcus jumped out of the car before my father had even turned off the engine.

"Lily!""

A small figure emerged from behind a row of storage units.

She was wearing a gray hoodie and holding a cardboard box against her chest.

"Dad!""

Marcus ran toward her.

He dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around her.

I watched them embrace.

For a moment, I forgot about Melissa, the recordings, and the terrible secrets surrounding my mother's death.

There was only a father holding his daughter.

And a daughter who had apparently spent too long wondering whether she would ever see him again.

"Are you hurt?"" Marcus asked.

Lily shook her head.

"No.""

"Did anyone follow you?""

"I don't think so.""

He held her face between his hands.

"Why did you come here alone?""

She looked down.

"Because I found the box in Mom's old room. I thought it might be important.""

Marcus looked at the cardboard box.

"Is that what you found?""

She nodded.

Then she noticed me.

"You're Jaylen?""

I nodded.

She held out her hand.

"I'm Lily.""

I shook it.

"Hi.""

She looked at my father.

"Is that Daniel?""

My father stepped forward.

"Yes.""

Lily hesitated.

Then she asked something that made the entire parking lot go quiet.

"Did you know my mother was going to hurt Jaylen's mom?""

Daniel looked at her.

"What?""

Lily lowered her eyes.

"I heard them arguing before Grandma died.""

My father froze.

Robert had just arrived behind us.

He looked at Lily.

"Grandma?""

Lily nodded.

"My grandmother Evelyn. She used to tell me stories about Jaylen's mom.""

Robert's face changed.

"Evelyn is alive?""

Lily nodded again.

"Yes. She's the one who gave me the box.""

Robert took a step toward her.

"Where is she?""

"I don't know. She told me she had to leave.""

My father looked at the box.

"Can we see what's inside?""

Lily nodded.

We carried it into the small office near the entrance.

The night manager was asleep behind the counter. Marcus explained that we needed a few minutes, and the man reluctantly allowed us to use the back room.

Lily placed the box on the table.

Inside were several folders, old photographs, a cassette player, and a sealed envelope.

The cassette player looked ancient.

My father picked up the tape.

*DANIEL'S FINAL CONFESSION.*

His hands began trembling.

"Where did this come from?"" he asked.

Lily answered quietly.

"Grandma said your mother recorded it.""

Robert looked at the tape.

"Does it still work?""

Lily nodded.

"She said the batteries were replaced recently.""

My father stared at the cassette player.

"Who recorded this?""

Lily looked at him.

"Your wife.""

The room became silent.

Robert placed the cassette inside the player.

He pressed the button.

A mechanical clicking sound followed.

Then my mother's voice filled the room.

"Daniel, if you're listening to this, then I wasn't able to tell you the truth in person.""

My father sat down.

His eyes filled with tears.

The recording continued.

"I know you love our son. I know you would never knowingly put him in danger. But there is something I discovered about Melissa that you must understand.""

A pause.

Then my mother's voice became quieter.

"Melissa has been using your identity to move money from Jaylen's trust. She has also been using Lily's name to open accounts overseas.""

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Lily lowered her head.

My mother continued.

"I confronted her. She told me I was interfering with her life. She said I had no right to question her.""

A faint sound came through the tape.

A door closing.

Then my mother spoke again.

"Daniel, I need you to remember something. Melissa knows about the guardianship agreement. She knows that if I die, Jaylen could inherit everything without her approval.""

My father covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

"She asked me to sign documents transferring control of his trust. I refused.""

I looked at Robert.

He was staring at the floor.

Then my mother said something that made me grip the edge of the table.

"If anything happens to me, please don't believe that it was an accident until you know who had access to my medication.""

The tape clicked.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then another voice appeared.

Daniel's voice.

My father's voice.

"Melissa, I told you to stop.""

I turned toward him.

He looked horrified.

The recording continued.

Melissa answered.

"Then make her stop talking.""

Daniel's voice became sharper.

"She's your friend.""

"She was.""

"She's the mother of my son.""

"Exactly. And she is about to ruin everything.""

There was a loud sound.

Then my father's voice again.

"Give me the folder.""

"No.""

"Melissa, give it to me.""

"You don't understand what you're doing.""

A pause.

Then Melissa said:

"You're going to lose everything if she goes to the police.""

My father suddenly stood.

"Turn it off.""

Robert looked at him.

"Daniel...""

"TURN IT OFF!""

The cassette player continued running.

Then came my father's voice again.

"I just want Jaylen to be safe.""

Melissa laughed.

"Then you should stop asking questions.""

The recording ended with a loud bang.

I stared at my father.

"That was you.""

He sat down slowly.

"I know.""

"Why were you arguing with her?""

He looked at me.

"Because I found out she had been taking money from your trust.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"When?""

"That night.""

The same night my mother died.

I stepped backward.

"You knew?""

He nodded.

"I confronted Melissa before I went to the hospital.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought I could fix it.""

Robert shook his head.

"You thought you could keep the family together by hiding everything.""

Daniel looked at him.

"I thought I could protect Jaylen.""

I felt tears running down my face.

"By letting me believe Mom died peacefully?""

He didn't answer.

"By marrying Melissa?""

His face crumpled.

"Jaylen, I didn't know what she had done.""

"But you knew she was stealing!""

"I knew she had taken money. I didn't know she was involved in your mother's death.""

I looked toward Lily.

She was holding a photograph.

"There's more," she whispered.

Everyone turned toward her.

She removed a small paper from the bottom of the box.

It was a hospital visitor log.

My mother's name appeared at the top.

Beneath it were three signatures.

Daniel Carter.

Melissa Carter.

And Evelyn Carter.

My father stared.

"Evelyn was at the hospital?""

Lily nodded.

"She told me she saw Melissa go into Grandma's room.""

Robert looked at her.

"What did she say?""

Lily swallowed.

"She said Melissa came out carrying a small bag. She was crying.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"What was in the bag?""

"I don't know.""

Lily pointed to the bottom of the visitor log.

A handwritten note appeared beside Melissa's signature.

*12:14 a.m. — Medication delivered.*

My father grabbed the paper.

"That's fifteen minutes before...""

He couldn't finish.

I looked at Lily.

"Did your grandmother tell you what happened?""

Lily nodded.

"She said she wanted to tell the police, but someone threatened her.""

Robert closed his eyes.

"That's why she disappeared.""

My father looked at the documents again.

"Then we need to find Evelyn.""

Lily opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded letter.

She handed it to me.

"Grandma said this was for you.""

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Dear Jaylen,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you. I am sorry that the adults in your life failed to protect you.

Your mother loved you more than anything. She knew Melissa was dangerous, but she also knew your father was too trusting to recognize the danger in time.

There is one more thing you need to know.

The night your mother died, Melissa did not act alone.

I stopped reading.

My father looked at me.

"What does it say?""

I continued.

Someone inside the hospital helped her. Someone who had access to your mother's medical records and could change the treatment notes.

I have the name.

Beneath the paragraph was a name.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

My father stared at it.

"Whitmore?""

Robert nodded slowly.

"He was the physician who signed your mother's death certificate.""

I looked at the letter again.

At the bottom was another sentence.

He is still working at the same hospital. And he knows that the original medical file was never destroyed.

Suddenly, Marcus's phone rang.

He answered.

"Hello?""

His face changed.

"Where?""

He listened.

Then he looked toward the entrance.

"What do you mean, she's outside?""

My father stood.

"Who?""

Marcus lowered the phone.

"Melissa.""

We rushed toward the office window.

A black SUV was parked outside the storage facility.

Melissa stood beside it.

But she wasn't alone.

A man wearing a dark suit was standing next to her.

I recognized him from the photograph.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

My father's phone vibrated.

An incoming message.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

The message contained a photograph of our house.

And underneath it were six words.

*I know where your son sleeps.*

My father looked at me.

Then he immediately called the police.

But before he could finish explaining, the office lights went out.

The room plunged into darkness.

Lily screamed.

Someone slammed against the metal door.

Marcus grabbed his daughter.

Robert pulled me behind the table.

Then a man's voice came from the other side.

"Daniel Carter. Open the door.""

My father stood frozen.

The voice continued.

"You have something that doesn't belong to you.""

I recognized the voice.

It was Dr. Whitmore.

And then I heard Melissa's voice.

"Give us the tape, Daniel. Nobody else has to get hurt.""

My father looked at the cassette player.

Then at me.

He picked up the tape and slipped it into his pocket.

"No," he whispered.

The door handle began turning.

Robert moved toward the emergency exit.

"Everyone out. Now.""

We hurried through the back corridor.

But as we reached the parking lot, I noticed something.

Melissa wasn't following us.

She was standing beside her SUV, smiling at someone on the phone.

Then I saw the person she was speaking to.

A woman sitting in the passenger seat.

An older woman with gray hair.

She turned toward the headlights.

I recognized her immediately.

My mother's face.

Not my mother herself.

But someone who looked almost exactly like her.

Robert stopped walking.

His voice trembled.

"Evelyn.""

The woman stepped out of the car.

She looked at me.

Then she said:

"Jaylen, I'm your mother's sister. And I have something to tell you about the night you were born.""

My father turned toward her.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Everything.""

She took a small envelope from her coat.

Then she looked directly at me.

"Because your mother wasn't protecting you from Melissa alone.""

May you like

She paused.

"She was protecting you from your own family.""
