Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew My Mother's Secret

My father looked toward the front door.
Robert immediately moved between me and the hallway.
"Don't open it," he said.
Daniel frowned.
"Why?""
"Because we don't know what Marcus wants.""
Melissa laughed.
"He's here for his daughter. Something you should have figured out by now.""
Another knock came.
"Daniel!"" the man shouted.
"I know you're in there!""
My father walked toward the door.
Robert caught his shoulder.
"Wait.""
"He's Lily's father. If he knows something about my wife, I want to hear it.""
Robert hesitated.
Then he nodded.
Daniel opened the door.
A tall man stood outside, wearing a dark jacket. He looked exhausted, with unshaven cheeks and deep shadows beneath his eyes.
He was holding a folder.
His gaze immediately moved past my father.
"Melissa.""
She folded her arms.
"Marcus.""
The man looked at her.
"Where is my daughter?""
Melissa rolled her eyes.
"I told you. She's safe.""
"Then let me speak to her.""
"No.""
Marcus stepped inside.
Daniel moved aside.
"Who are you?""
Marcus looked at him.
"Marcus Bell. Melissa's former husband.""
My father nodded stiffly.
"Daniel.""
"I know who you are.""
Marcus looked at me.
"And you must be Jaylen.""
I nodded.
He lowered his voice.
"I'm sorry about your mother.""
My heart tightened.
"Did you know her?""
He looked toward Melissa.
"Better than you might think.""
Melissa immediately interrupted.
"Marcus, don't start.""
He placed the folder on the coffee table.
"I've spent three years trying to find my daughter. Every time I get close, someone changes her address, changes her school records, or tells me she's living with relatives.""
He opened the folder.
Inside were copies of court documents, photographs, and letters.
"My daughter disappeared shortly after Melissa married Daniel.""
Daniel frowned.
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
"I did. But Melissa had legal custody arrangements that made it difficult. She kept moving Lily between relatives and temporary addresses.""
Melissa snapped.
"That's a lie!""
Marcus looked at her.
"You haven't let me speak to my daughter in eleven months.""
"She's old enough to decide whether she wants to see you.""
"She's eleven!""
Melissa looked away.
Marcus turned toward Daniel.
"There's something you need to know. Your wife has been using other people's identities for years.""
Robert nodded.
"We already found evidence of financial transfers.""
Marcus looked surprised.
"You found the accounts?""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Yes. Money was taken from my son's trust.""
Marcus opened another section of the folder.
"Then you need to see this.""
He pulled out a document.
It was an insurance policy.
The name on it was my mother's.
My father stared.
"Where did you get this?""
"From an attorney who handled Melissa's previous financial arrangements.""
Daniel read the document.
Then his hands began trembling.
"What is this?""
Marcus pointed to a section near the bottom.
"Your wife was listed as a secondary beneficiary on a policy connected to your wife's estate.""
My father shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
"Look at the date.""
It was dated two months before my mother's death.
I looked at Melissa.
"Why were you named on Mom's insurance?""
She didn't answer.
Marcus continued.
"Because your mother had been trying to protect someone.""
Robert stepped forward.
"Marcus, tell them about Evelyn.""
My father looked confused.
"Who is Evelyn?""
Marcus sighed.
"Melissa's older sister.""
I remembered the name from the previous conversation.
My mother's sister.
But Robert had said Evelyn was estranged from the family.
Marcus placed another photograph on the table.
It showed three women standing outside a building.
My mother.
Melissa.
And a woman I didn't recognize.
"That's Evelyn," Marcus said.
I stared at the photograph.
"Why were they together?""
"Because they were all involved in the same organization.""
Robert nodded.
"The Haven Children's Trust.""
Marcus looked at him.
"You know about it?""
"Yes.""
"Then you know Evelyn disappeared after your sister died.""
My father looked between them.
"Wait. You're telling me my wife's sister disappeared?""
Robert nodded slowly.
"She left the country shortly after the funeral.""
"Why?""
Robert looked down.
"Because she was afraid.""
Marcus opened the folder again.
"Before Evelyn disappeared, she sent me a package. She told me to keep it safe until Lily was old enough.""
He removed a small envelope.
The front had my mother's handwriting.
My heart started racing.
"That's Mom's writing.""
Marcus nodded.
"She gave it to me.""
Melissa suddenly stepped forward.
"Give me that.""
Marcus moved away.
"No.""
"You have no right to keep it.""
"Actually, I do.""
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter and a photograph of a baby.
I recognized the hospital blanket.
It was the same blanket from the photograph my father had shown me.
Marcus unfolded the letter.
Then he looked at my father.
"Your wife wrote this before she died.""
Daniel took the letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
His expression changed with every sentence.
Finally, he looked at Robert.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Robert lowered his head.
"Because your wife asked me not to.""
Daniel gripped the paper.
"What is this?""
Robert answered quietly.
"It's a guardianship agreement.""
My father stared.
"Guardianship?""
"Your wife had made arrangements for Jaylen in case something happened to her.""
I felt my stomach twist.
"With whom?""
Robert looked at Marcus.
Marcus slowly raised his eyes toward me.
"With me.""
The room went silent.
I stepped backward.
"What?""
Marcus placed the photograph of the baby beside the letter.
"Your mother trusted me to protect you if she couldn't.""
I looked at my father.
He seemed just as shocked as I was.
"Why would she choose you?""
Marcus took a deep breath.
"Because she knew Melissa would eventually come after the money.""
Daniel frowned.
"What money?""
Marcus opened the final document.
A legal trust agreement.
My name was written at the top.
*Jaylen Daniel Carter.*
Below it was a clause explaining that if both biological parents were unable to care for me, guardianship could be transferred to a named individual.
The named individual was Marcus Bell.
I looked at him.
"But you're Melissa's ex-husband.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why would Mom trust you?""
He looked toward Melissa.
"Because your mother helped save my daughter.""
I stared.
Marcus continued.
"Years ago, Lily became seriously ill. Melissa was struggling financially and had stopped paying for her treatment. Your mother found out and stepped in. She paid the hospital bills and helped arrange treatment.""
My throat tightened.
"That's why she gave Melissa the necklace?""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
Melissa suddenly laughed.
"Such a beautiful story. Too bad it's missing the part where your mother tried to take Lily away from me.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Because she knew you were neglecting her.""
"She had no right!""
"She was trying to protect a child.""
Melissa turned toward Daniel.
"Are you going to let him speak about me like this?""
Daniel didn't respond.
Marcus continued.
"Your wife discovered that Melissa had been transferring money from the foundation into private accounts. Some of that money was being used to maintain a second property.""
My father frowned.
"What property?""
Marcus pulled out a photograph.
It showed a small house on the outskirts of town.
"Melissa owns this place through a company registered under another name.""
Robert examined the photograph.
"That's where Lily was staying.""
Marcus nodded.
"But that's not all.""
He removed a second photograph.
This one showed a basement window.
A security camera was mounted above it.
I looked at the image.
"Why is there a camera?""
Marcus swallowed.
"Because someone was keeping records of everyone who entered that house.""
Melissa stepped forward.
"Enough!""
Marcus ignored her.
"Three weeks ago, I found something in that property. A storage box filled with medical documents.""
My father went completely still.
"What medical documents?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Your mother's.""
He placed a photocopy on the table.
It showed a hospital prescription dated six years earlier.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
*Medication administered at 11:58 p.m.*
I stared at the time.
My mother had died at 12:26 a.m.
I felt sick.
Marcus continued.
"That medication wasn't on the original prescription.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
Robert looked at the paper.
"Is this authentic?""
"An independent medical reviewer confirmed that the document appears genuine. But we still need the hospital's original records.""
I looked toward Melissa.
She had stopped speaking.
Her face was pale.
"Did you give Mom that medication?"" I asked.
She stared at me.
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"Then why was it in your property?""
She turned toward Daniel.
"You're allowing these men to poison your mind.""
My father stepped forward.
"Answer him.""
Melissa shook her head.
"Daniel, please.""
"Did you have anything to do with my wife's death?""
She suddenly began crying.
But this time, I didn't believe her.
"You're all making a mistake," she whispered.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
It was faint, but I recognized the name when Marcus spoke.
"Lily?""
His face changed.
"Where are you?""
He listened.
Then his expression became terrified.
"What do you mean she's there?""
Melissa lunged toward him.
"Give me the phone!""
Marcus moved away.
"Lily, listen to me. Don't go near her.""
He stopped.
Then whispered:
"Lock the door.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"What's happening?"" I asked.
Marcus looked at me.
"Lily is at the storage facility.""
Robert immediately stood.
"Locker 214?""
Marcus nodded.
"And she says someone has already opened it.""
My father grabbed his keys.
"We're going.""
Robert blocked the door.
"Wait. We need to think.""
Daniel shook his head.
"My son's life has already been turned upside down. I'm not sitting here while another child is in danger.""
Melissa suddenly smiled.
It was the same smile I'd seen when she tore her dress.
"Then perhaps you should hurry.""
My father turned toward her.
"What did you do?""
She stepped backward.
"Nothing.""
But her eyes moved toward the silver key.
The key she had been holding all night.
The key that opened locker 214.
And then I noticed something.
The key was no longer on the table.
It was in Melissa's hand.
She slipped it into her pocket.
Then she ran.
"STOP HER!"" Marcus shouted.
My father chased her toward the front door.
Robert grabbed my arm.
"Jaylen, stay here!""
But I couldn't.
Not after everything.
Not after hearing that my mother had tried to protect me.
Not after discovering that another child might be in danger.
I followed them outside.
Melissa was already climbing into her SUV.
Daniel reached the driver's door.
She started the engine.
Then she rolled down the window and looked directly at him.
"You should have left the past buried, Daniel.""
She pressed the accelerator.
The SUV sped backward, nearly knocking my father off his feet.
Then it disappeared down the street.
Marcus ran toward his car.
"Lily is at the storage facility. We have to get there now!""
My father turned toward me.
"Jaylen, get in.""
I climbed into the back seat.
As we drove away, my phone vibrated.
Another message from Lily.
*I found something in Grandma's box.*
Then a photograph arrived.
It showed a small cassette tape.
Written across its label were three words.
*DANIEL'S FINAL CONFESSION.*
I looked at my father.
He was gripping the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
"Dad?""
He didn't answer.
I held up my phone.
"What's on this tape?""
His eyes met mine in the rearview mirror.
May you like
And for the first time, I saw something worse than fear.
I saw guilt.
