Chapter 3: What My Mother Left Behind

Michael read the document three times.
He stood beneath the kitchen pendant lights, holding the page so tightly that the corners bent beneath his fingers.
Emily watched his face.
"Dad?""
He didn't answer.
"Dad, what does it mean?""
Michael lowered the paper.
"Your mother purchased this house before we got married.""
Emily stared at him.
"I know.""
"No. You know she lived here. You don't know what she arranged before she died.""
Vanessa moved toward the staircase.
Michael noticed immediately.
"Don't.""
She stopped.
"I need to get my purse.""
"You can get it later.""
"I am not being held prisoner in my own home.""
Michael pointed at the document.
"Then explain why the deed says Emily Carter is the sole beneficiary of this property.""
Emily's breath caught.
"What?""
Michael turned the paper around.
It was a copy of a deed, with her mother's name listed as the original owner and a trust named as the current property holder.
Emily recognized the name.
The Laura Carter Family Trust.
Her mother's name.
She had heard it mentioned when she was younger, but never understood what it meant. Michael had explained that her mother had arranged some financial matters before becoming ill.
He'd promised everything was taken care of.
"Mom left me this house?"" Emily asked.
Michael nodded.
"She put it in a trust. You were supposed to receive full control of it when you turned twenty-six.""
Emily looked around the kitchen.
The granite counters. The long wooden table. The photographs lining the hallway.
The house where she had spent her childhood.
The house where her mother used to sing while cooking Sunday breakfast.
The house where Vanessa had just thrown her out.
"You knew?"" Emily asked.
Michael's eyes dropped.
"I knew the house was meant for you. I didn't know how much legal protection your mother had built around it.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I thought it was better to wait until you were ready. Your mother wanted you to have a stable home. I wanted to preserve that.""
"But you let Vanessa treat me like I didn't belong here.""
Michael looked as though she had slapped him.
"Emily—"
"You heard her call it her home. You heard her tell me I had no right to stay. And I believed her because you never corrected her.""
He opened his mouth, then closed it.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"This is exactly what I've been trying to explain. Your mother left this house in a trust because she didn't trust anybody to make decisions for Emily. Michael had to deal with all of it, and I helped him.""
Emily turned.
"Helped him steal my money?""
"I didn't steal anything.""
"Then where is it?""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"I invested it.""
"Where?""
"That's not something you understand.""
"Then explain it to me.""
Vanessa looked at Michael.
"Can you please get her to stop?""
Michael didn't move.
"Answer her.""
Vanessa's composure cracked.
"Fine. Some of the money went into a property investment. Some went toward business expenses. I was going to repay the trust when the investment matured.""
"What business?"" Emily asked.
"Mine.""
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"Your business has been closed for eight months.""
Vanessa looked away.
The admission hung in the air.
Emily turned toward her father.
"What investment?""
Michael glanced at the document.
"Daniel said some of the money went toward property payments.""
"Whose property?""
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"You're making a mistake digging into this.""
Michael picked up his phone.
"I'm calling Daniel back.""
Vanessa moved quickly, trying to grab the device.
Michael stepped aside.
"Don't touch me.""
Her hand fell.
The call connected.
"Michael?""
"Daniel, I found a deed showing the house is held in Laura's trust. Emily is listed as the sole beneficiary. Why did Vanessa tell me I had to refinance the property?""
Silence.
Then Daniel spoke.
"Because she had already applied for a loan against it.""
Michael's head snapped up.
"What?""
"Three months ago, I received a request for verification of the trust's ownership. I rejected it. The house cannot be used as collateral without Emily's consent and the trustee's authorization.""
"Did somebody apply anyway?""
"Yes.""
Michael looked at Vanessa.
She had gone completely still.
"Who?""
"A private lender received an application from a company called Vantage Property Group. The application listed your wife as the controlling officer and your signature as trustee approval.""
Michael's voice dropped.
"I never approved that.""
"I know. That's why I called you in August. You told me you hadn't signed any loan application.""
Emily looked between them.
"August?""
Daniel continued.
"Michael, I also sent you a copy of the suspicious transfer authorization. You never acknowledged receiving it.""
Michael frowned.
"I don't remember that.""
"I have the delivery confirmation.""
Michael glanced at Vanessa.
She was staring at the phone.
"Daniel, did Vanessa have access to my email?""
"According to the forwarding records, several messages sent to you were redirected to an address linked to her company.""
Michael's face hardened.
"You're telling me she intercepted your warnings?""
"I'm telling you the evidence points that way.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
"Of course it does. Everyone's against me now.""
Michael lowered the phone.
"Did you redirect my emails?""
"No.""
"Did you apply for a loan against this house?""
"I was trying to secure our future.""
"With a property that belongs to Emily?""
"You're twisting everything!""
Emily took a step toward the counter.
"Why did you throw me outside tonight?""
Vanessa looked at her.
"Because you wouldn't listen.""
"Listen to what?""
"That you can't stay here forever.""
"I was never trying to stay forever. I work. I pay my car insurance. I've been saving for an apartment.""
Vanessa scoffed.
"Saving? You've been here for years.""
"I moved back after my lease ended. Dad said I could stay while I saved.""
Michael nodded.
"That's true.""
Vanessa looked at him with disbelief.
"You told me she would only stay for a few months.""
"I told you she was welcome.""
"And I told you I didn't want to live with another adult child.""
Emily's eyes narrowed.
"Then why didn't you say that to me directly?""
"Because your father wouldn't allow a normal conversation.""
Michael stepped between them.
"Enough, Vanessa.""
"No. I'm tired of being the only person in this house who has to make sacrifices.""
Emily looked at the papers.
"The house is mine. The money is mine. What sacrifices did you make?""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"You have no idea what I gave up to build this family.""
Michael spoke quietly.
"What did you do with the money, Vanessa?""
She didn't answer.
"What did you do with the rest of Emily's inheritance?""
Vanessa turned toward the hallway.
Michael followed her with his eyes.
"Where are you going?""
"To get my things.""
"You're not leaving until we know what's happened.""
She spun around.
"You can't tell me what to do!""
Michael looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said, "You're right. I can't control you. But I can make sure you don't touch another dollar belonging to my daughter.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"You're going to choose her over me?""
Michael's shoulders slumped.
"This isn't about choosing.""
"It always has been!""
"No. It's about what you did.""
Vanessa looked at Emily.
"You think you've won something?""
Emily said nothing.
"You think your mother was some kind of saint? You have no idea what she was really like. She left this family with problems you could never understand.""
Michael's face darkened.
"Don't bring Laura into this.""
Vanessa took a step closer.
"She left you responsible for a child and a mess of paperwork. I was the one who had to deal with everything.""
Emily felt her hands begin to shake.
"You had a choice. You could have left.""
Vanessa stared at her.
For a moment, her expression was almost honest.
Then she leaned toward Emily.
"You should have stayed outside.""
Michael moved immediately.
"Get away from her.""
Vanessa backed away, but not before Emily noticed something else.
Her stepmother's right hand was clenched around a small silver key.
It was attached to a blue plastic tag.
Emily recognized it.
Her mother's old jewelry box key.
The box had disappeared from the bedroom closet several months earlier. Vanessa had claimed it was probably packed away with old holiday decorations.
Emily pointed at her hand.
"Where did you get that?""
Vanessa looked down.
She slipped the key into her pocket.
"It's mine.""
"No, it isn't.""
"Emily, leave it alone.""
"That's my mother's key.""
Vanessa turned toward Michael.
"Are we really going to do this now?""
Michael held out his hand.
"Give it to me.""
She shook her head.
"There's nothing in that box.""
Emily's heart started beating faster.
"Then why do you have the key?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Michael stepped closer.
"Give it to me.""
With a sharp movement, Vanessa pulled the key from her pocket and threw it onto the counter.
It skidded across the granite.
Emily caught it before it fell.
Her fingers closed around the cold metal.
She looked at the tag.
A tiny handwritten label was attached to it.
*Storage Unit 318.*
Emily stared at the words.
"What storage unit?""
Vanessa's face went blank.
Michael saw it.
"Vanessa?""
She swallowed.
"I don't know what that is.""
"Your handwriting is on the tag," Emily said.
Vanessa reached for the key, but Emily moved away.
"Don't touch it.""
Michael looked at his wife.
"What's in that storage unit?""
"Nothing important.""
"Then why hide it?""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"Because your daughter has been digging through my things and accusing me of stealing!""
Emily held up the key.
"This is my mother's key.""
Vanessa pointed at her.
"Your mother is dead, Emily. You need to stop acting like everything she ever owned gives you the right to control this family.""
The words struck harder than Emily expected.
Michael's face changed.
"That's enough. You're not speaking about her that way again.""
He picked up his phone.
"Daniel, I need you to do something. Find out who owns Storage Unit 318 and whether it's connected to Vantage Property Group.""
Daniel answered immediately.
"I'll look into it.""
Michael ended the call.
Emily stared at the key.
She remembered the jewelry box from her childhood. It had been a dark wooden box with a small brass lock. Her mother used to keep letters, photographs, and a few pieces of jewelry inside.
After Laura died, Michael had stored it in the bedroom closet.
Then, one day, it was gone.
Emily had asked Vanessa about it.
Vanessa told her not to obsess over things that couldn't bring her mother back.
Now the key was in her hand.
"How long have you had this?"" Emily asked.
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
"I don't remember.""
"You stole it from my room?""
"I said I don't remember.""
Michael stepped toward her.
"You're going to answer her.""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"Fine! I took it. I was trying to protect you.""
"Protect us from what?"" Michael asked.
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
"From what Laura left behind.""
Emily felt a chill.
"What did my mother leave behind?""
Vanessa looked at her.
For the first time, there was no anger in her eyes.
Only fear.
"Something you were never supposed to find.""
Michael stared at his wife.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.
She unlocked it with trembling fingers.
Then she opened a photograph and turned the screen toward them.
It showed a handwritten letter.
The paper was yellowed at the edges. The handwriting was unmistakable.
Emily's mother's handwriting.
At the bottom was a date from eleven years earlier, several weeks before Laura died.
Emily leaned forward.
The letter began with three words.
Michael, if Vanessa...
Then the photograph disappeared.
Vanessa had locked her phone.
Emily looked up.
"What did the rest of that letter say?""
Vanessa clutched the phone against her chest.
"Nothing you need to know.""
Michael's voice was dangerously quiet.
"Give me the phone.""
"No.""
"Vanessa.""
She backed away.
Then she looked directly at Emily.
"Your mother didn't leave you that money because she trusted you, sweetheart.""
Emily felt her throat tighten.
"Why did she leave it to me?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"Because she knew exactly what I would do.""
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Emily's phone buzzed.
A new message appeared from the unknown number.
I see you've found the key. Whatever happens, do not let Vanessa take you to Unit 318 alone.
Emily stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
Your mother's letter is inside. And it proves your father wasn't the only person she was afraid of.
Outside, a car door slammed.
Vanessa turned toward the front window.
Her face went white.
"He's here," she whispered.
Michael moved toward the curtains.
"Who?""
Vanessa backed away from the kitchen island.
Then the doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
May you like
And a man's voice called through the front door.
"Vanessa? It's Daniel. We need to talk about the money you took from Laura Carter's trust.""
