Chapter 4: The Man at the Door

The doorbell rang a third time.

Vanessa didn't move.

She stood beside the kitchen island, her phone pressed against her chest, staring at the front door as though the person outside had come to collect her.

Michael walked toward the entrance.

"Don't open it," Vanessa said.

He stopped.

"Why?""

"Because I need to explain something first.""

"You've had all evening to explain things.""

"Michael, please.""

He looked over his shoulder.

His wife was trembling now. Not the kind of trembling that came from being falsely accused. It was the kind that came when someone realized a secret had finally caught up with them.

Michael opened the door.

A tall man in his late forties stood on the porch wearing a navy suit and carrying a leather document case. His dark hair was beginning to gray at the temples. A pair of thin-framed glasses rested on his nose.

Daniel Brooks.

The attorney who had managed Laura Carter's estate.

"Michael," Daniel said.

"I'm sorry to show up unannounced.""

Michael stepped aside.

"You're just in time.""

Daniel entered, then glanced toward the kitchen.

His eyes landed on Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter.""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

"Daniel. I didn't know you were coming.""

"I imagine that's because you didn't invite me.""

He placed his document case on the dining table.

Michael closed the front door.

"Tell me what's happening.""

Daniel removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"Before I do, I need to know whether anyone else has been inside this house tonight.""

"Just us," Michael answered.

Daniel glanced toward Emily.

"Emily, right?""

She nodded.

"I'm sorry we've never properly met. Your mother spoke about you constantly.""

Emily swallowed.

"Did she?""

"She did. Usually while telling me I was charging too much for paperwork.""

Despite everything, Emily almost smiled.

Her mother had always complained about professionals who made simple things unnecessarily complicated.

Daniel's expression softened.

"She was a remarkable woman.""

Vanessa let out a sharp breath.

"Can we please stop pretending this is some emotional reunion? Daniel, you came here to discuss business. Discuss it.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Very well.""

He opened his case and removed a thick folder.

"Three days ago, I received a notice that funds belonging to the Laura Carter Family Trust had been used as collateral for a private loan.""

Michael frowned.

"How much?""

"The requested loan was five hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""

Emily gripped the kitchen counter.

"Against the house?""

"Against the house and the remaining trust assets.""

Daniel placed a copy of the application on the table.

"The lender declined the request because the property ownership documentation didn't match the records filed with the county. However, the application included what appears to be a fraudulent trustee authorization.""

Michael scanned the page.

His signature sat beneath a paragraph authorizing the transaction.

He shook his head.

"I didn't sign this.""

"I know.""

"How?""

"Because I have your original signature from the trust documents, and this one doesn't match.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Anyone can make a mistake.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Not one that involves copying another person's signature onto a loan application.""

She lifted her chin.

"I had permission.""

Michael turned.

"From whom?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

"From whom, Vanessa?""

She looked directly at him.

"You.""

Michael laughed once, without humor.

"I just told you I didn't sign it.""

"You agreed to let me handle the finances.""

"That is not permission to mortgage Emily's inheritance.""

"I was trying to save the family!""

Emily stepped forward.

"From what?""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"From you.""

The words landed heavily.

Michael moved between them.

"That's enough.""

But Emily wasn't finished.

"What exactly was I going to do? Ask where my money went? Ask why you wanted me out of the house?""

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel closed the folder.

"Mrs. Carter, I think you need to understand something. The lender has not simply rejected an application. They've flagged the documents for suspected fraud.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"Fraud?""

"Yes.""

"You're accusing me of a crime?""

"I'm telling you what the lender has documented. The signatures are being questioned, the account transfers are under review, and the trust's attorneys have been notified.""

Vanessa looked at Michael.

"You let him do this?""

"I didn't know anything about it until tonight.""

"You could have called me first.""

"I've been standing in this kitchen listening to you lie for two hours.""

Daniel removed another sheet of paper.

"There is something else.""

Michael stared at him.

"What now?""

"The company used for the loan application, Vantage Property Group, was registered using the address of a storage facility.""

Emily immediately thought of the silver key.

"Unit 318?""

Daniel looked at her.

"How do you know that?""

Emily held up the key.

"Because I found this.""

Daniel's expression changed.

He took the key carefully.

"Where did you get it?""

"Vanessa had it.""

Daniel looked at her, then at Vanessa.

"Is there something stored in Unit 318?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Nothing relevant.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"That's not an answer.""

"Why are you all treating a storage unit like it's some kind of criminal headquarters?""

"Because the unit is registered under Vantage Property Group," Daniel replied.

Michael stared.

"Then what's inside?""

"I don't know. But when I checked the account, I found monthly payments going back eleven months.""

Emily counted silently.

Eleven months.

Vanessa had been paying for the unit since shortly after her father married her.

Daniel continued.

"I also found an emergency contact attached to the account. Someone named Claire Bennett.""

Emily frowned.

"Who is Claire Bennett?""

Daniel looked toward the ceiling as if searching his memory.

"She was Laura's personal assistant.""

Michael went still.

"Claire?""

"Yes. She worked with Laura during the final year of her life.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Claire left years ago. She has nothing to do with this.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Then why is her name on the storage account?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No answer came.

Emily's phone vibrated again.

She looked down.

Don't let Daniel take the key.

Emily's eyes moved to the attorney.

Another message appeared.

He doesn't know everything.

She looked toward the front window.

The car that had arrived earlier was still parked outside.

A shadow moved behind its windshield.

Emily typed a reply.

Who are you?

The response came almost immediately.

Someone your mother trusted.

Emily's heart began pounding.

She glanced at Daniel.

"Do you know where Claire Bennett is?""

Daniel looked surprised.

"I haven't spoken to her in years. Why?""

Emily turned her phone toward him.

The unknown messages glowed on the screen.

Daniel read them.

Then he looked at the number.

His expression became serious.

"Emily, don't respond again until I verify who's sending these.""

"Why?""

"Because whoever is sending them knows things that haven't been made public.""

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her coat from the back of a chair.

"I'm leaving.""

Michael stepped toward the hallway.

"You're not taking anything from this house.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"I don't need anything from you.""

She reached for the front door.

Daniel spoke sharply.

"Mrs. Carter, before you leave, I need to ask one question.""

She stopped with her hand on the handle.

"What?""

"Did you ever have access to Laura's private correspondence?""

Vanessa turned slowly.

"I was her husband's wife. Of course I did.""

Michael frowned.

"You didn't marry me until two years after Laura died.""

Vanessa froze.

The kitchen became completely silent.

Daniel looked at her.

"Then how did you know about her private correspondence?""

Vanessa's face flushed.

"I meant afterward. Michael told me about her letters.""

Michael shook his head.

"I never showed you her letters.""

Daniel opened his folder again.

"That's important. Because the letter we recovered from the estate records suggests Laura anticipated someone might attempt to access her property after her death.""

Emily leaned forward.

"There's a letter?""

Daniel nodded.

"A copy. The original was never found.""

"Where is the copy?""

"At my office.""

Vanessa's hand tightened around the doorknob.

Daniel continued.

"Laura wrote that if her original documents disappeared, Emily should receive a separate sealed statement explaining why the trust was structured the way it was.""

Emily felt her breath catch.

"What did it say?""

Daniel looked at Michael.

"I haven't opened it. The statement was sealed specifically for Emily.""

Vanessa suddenly turned.

"You can't give that to her.""

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Why not?""

"Because she isn't ready.""

Emily's voice shook.

"Stop deciding what I'm ready to know.""

Vanessa glared at her.

Then, without another word, she opened the door and stepped outside.

Michael started after her.

Daniel held up a hand.

"Let her go. We need to preserve the documents and establish exactly what she's done.""

Michael remained frozen.

After several seconds, the sound of an engine started outside.

Emily stared at the empty doorway.

Her stepmother had left.

But something about the way she had looked at the storage key made Emily certain Vanessa hadn't given up.

Daniel gathered the documents.

"I suggest neither of you touches anything else until we know what's in that unit.""

Michael nodded.

"Can you arrange for someone to open it?""

"Not tonight. I need to verify the account records and establish who has legal access.""

Emily looked at the key in her hand.

"But what if Vanessa gets there first?""

Daniel paused.

Then he said something that made Michael's expression darken.

"She already has.""

Emily looked up.

"What?""

Daniel turned his laptop toward them.

On the screen was a security notification from the storage facility.

The message was timestamped twenty minutes earlier.

*Unit 318: Access granted.*

The name recorded at the entrance was Vanessa Carter.

But the strange part was the second name on the entry record.

Someone had entered the facility with her.

May you like

Someone whose name Emily recognized from the messages.

*Claire Bennett.*
