Chapter 5: Storage Unit 318

By midnight, the rain had started.
Emily sat in the passenger seat of her father's SUV, clutching the silver key while Daniel followed behind in his own car.
Michael had insisted on going to the storage facility.
Daniel had insisted they contact the facility manager first.
Neither man had been able to convince the other to wait until morning.
Emily understood both arguments.
But she also knew that Vanessa had already been there.
Whatever her mother had left behind might be disappearing at that very moment.
"Are you sure you want to do this tonight?"" Michael asked.
Emily watched the road.
"Are you asking because you're worried about what we'll find?""
"Both.""
She looked at him.
"Then why did you let Vanessa get away with everything for so long?""
Michael's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
The question sat between them.
Finally, he answered.
"Because I thought keeping the peace was the same thing as keeping you safe.""
Emily looked away.
"Was it?""
"No.""
The answer came quietly.
Michael swallowed.
"I kept telling myself Vanessa was adjusting to having you in the house. That you two needed time. That I could make things better if I stayed out of the arguments.""
"You weren't staying out of them, Dad. You were choosing her side.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
Emily stared through the windshield.
Streetlights passed over the dashboard in long, pale flashes.
"I stopped telling you things because I knew you'd ask what I had done to upset her.""
Michael's eyes filled.
"Baby...""
"I'm not saying you didn't love me. I'm saying I got used to being uncomfortable in my own home because I didn't want you to be unhappy.""
Michael pulled into the storage facility parking lot.
He stopped the car but didn't immediately get out.
"I'm sorry.""
Emily turned toward him.
"I need more than an apology.""
"I know.""
"I need you to find out what happened to Mom's money. I need you to make sure Vanessa can't take anything else. And I need you to stop telling me to be patient with people who hurt me.""
Michael nodded.
"I promise.""
Emily looked at the storage facility.
Rows of metal doors stretched beneath bright fluorescent lights. Rain tapped against the roof.
Daniel parked beside them and approached the SUV.
"I spoke with the manager," he said.
"The police have not been called. The facility is cooperating, but we need to be careful about the access records.""
Michael opened his door.
"Did you find out who owns the unit?""
"Vantage Property Group.""
"And Claire?""
"She's listed as an authorized visitor.""
Emily held out the key.
Daniel shook his head.
"Let's wait until the manager confirms what we're allowed to access.""
They entered the office together.
A middle-aged man stood behind the counter, wearing a gray polo shirt and reading glasses.
He looked up.
"Can I help you?""
Daniel introduced himself and showed his identification.
"We're here regarding Unit 318. The account is under Vantage Property Group.""
The manager glanced at his computer.
"That account?""
Michael stepped forward.
"What do you mean?""
The manager lowered his voice.
"There's been some trouble with that unit.""
Daniel frowned.
"What kind of trouble?""
"Someone called earlier asking us to remove the contents. I told them we needed written authorization from the account holder.""
Emily's pulse quickened.
"Who called?""
The manager checked the screen.
"Vanessa Carter.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"Did you remove anything?""
"No. But she came in with another woman later.""
"Claire Bennett?"" Daniel asked.
The manager nodded.
"That's the name on the visitor list.""
Emily looked at Daniel.
"Did they open the unit?""
"Yes.""
"Did they take anything?""
The manager hesitated.
"They left carrying a small box.""
Emily's stomach dropped.
"What kind of box?""
"Wooden. Dark brown. Had a brass lock on it.""
Her mother's jewelry box.
Emily felt the air disappear from the room.
"Where did they take it?""
"I don't know.""
Michael slammed his palm on the counter.
"Why didn't you stop them?""
"Sir, they were authorized visitors. I can't control what they remove.""
Daniel lifted a hand.
"Please. We need to see the unit.""
The manager hesitated, then escorted them through the facility.
They passed rows of numbered doors until they reached 318.
The manager entered a code.
The metal shutter rolled upward.
Inside was a mess.
Several cardboard boxes had been torn open. A folding table lay on its side. Papers covered the floor, some soaked with water from a leaking container.
Emily stepped inside.
The smell hit her first.
Dust, cardboard, and something faintly floral.
Lavender.
Her mother's perfume.
She crouched beside an open box.
Inside were old photographs, a cracked picture frame, and a bundle of envelopes tied with blue ribbon.
Emily picked one up.
The handwriting on the front made her chest tighten.
For my Emily, when she's old enough to understand.
Her eyes blurred.
Michael knelt beside her.
"That's your mother's handwriting?""
Emily nodded.
She carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of her as a little girl, sitting on Laura's lap in the backyard.
Emily remembered the day.
She had been missing two front teeth, and her mother had made her wear a yellow dress.
On the back, Laura had written:
My brave girl. Never let anyone convince you that you are difficult to love.
Emily pressed the photograph against her chest.
Michael looked away, visibly fighting tears.
Daniel moved toward the back of the unit.
"I need to document everything before we disturb it further.""
Emily stood.
"Where's the jewelry box?""
The manager pointed toward an empty shelf.
"It was there earlier.""
Michael walked deeper into the unit.
"Whoever came here knew exactly what to take.""
Daniel examined the remaining boxes.
"Not necessarily. They may have taken whatever was easiest to carry.""
Emily glanced at the floor.
A small piece of paper lay beneath a cardboard flap.
She picked it up.
It was a receipt from a local print shop.
The date was three months earlier.
The description read:
*Twenty-seven pages. Legal-size. Double-sided copies.*
Below it was a name.
*Vanessa Carter.*
Emily handed it to Daniel.
He studied the receipt.
"Did she have documents copied here?""
"Apparently.""
Michael examined the date.
"That's the day I signed those papers.""
Daniel nodded.
"Then this may be important.""
He photographed the receipt.
Emily continued searching through the boxes.
She found a folder containing bank statements, old insurance records, and several photographs of the house before renovations.
Then she found something unexpected.
A small digital voice recorder.
It was black, scratched along one side, with a strip of masking tape on the back.
Laura's handwriting appeared on it.
*Family Notes — 2015.*
Emily stared at it.
"That's Mom's.""
Michael took it gently.
"She used to record reminders because she hated writing everything down.""
"Does it still work?""
Daniel checked the device.
"The batteries are dead.""
The manager found a small box of spare batteries in the office. Daniel inserted them.
The screen flickered.
A file appeared.
*Recording 014.*
Michael pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then Laura's voice filled the storage unit.
"Okay. I think this is working.""
Emily stopped breathing.
Her mother sounded exactly as she remembered—warm, slightly breathless, with a little laugh at the end of her sentences.
"I need to make a note about the trust documents. Daniel says everything is set up correctly, but I don't want to rely on memory.""
A rustle of paper followed.
Then Laura continued.
"If Michael ever has to sign anything after I'm gone, he needs to read every page. Especially anything presented by Vanessa.""
Michael looked at Emily.
The recording continued.
"I don't want to believe she'd do something like this. But there are things that don't add up.""
Emily gripped the edge of the folding table.
Her mother had known.
She had known something was wrong before she died.
Laura's voice became quieter.
"Yesterday, I found copies of my bank statements in Vanessa's purse. She said she picked them up by mistake. But she knew the account number.
She knew the balance. And she knew when I was planning to move the money into Emily's trust.""
Michael's face turned pale.
He pressed his fingers against his mouth.
The recording continued.
"I talked to Claire. She thinks I'm overreacting, but she agreed to keep a second copy of the documents. Just in case.""
A pause.
Then Laura said something that made Emily's knees weaken.
"If Vanessa ever gets control of the trust, she won't stop with the money. She'll try to take the house, too.""
Michael stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
Rain tapped against the metal roof.
Emily looked at her father.
"Mom knew.""
Michael nodded slowly.
"She was afraid.""
Daniel took the recorder.
"There's another file.""
He pressed the button.
A second recording began.
This time, Laura sounded upset.
"Michael, if you ever listen to this, I need you to understand something. Vanessa isn't the only person I'm worried about.""
Michael frowned.
"What does that mean?""
The recording played on.
"There's something about the old business account. I found a payment made in your name, but you told me you never authorized it. I don't know whether someone used your information or whether...""
A loud noise interrupted the recording.
Then came Laura's voice again.
"Wait. Someone's at the door.""
A few seconds of shuffling followed.
Then a woman spoke.
"Laura? We need to talk.""
Emily's eyes widened.
She recognized the voice.
It was Vanessa.
The recording continued, but the sound became muffled.
"You're not supposed to have those papers," Vanessa said.
Laura answered.
"They're mine.""
"You don't understand what's at stake.""
"I understand perfectly.""
Then came a sound like something being dropped.
A chair scraped across the floor.
And Laura said, very clearly:
"Don't you dare threaten my daughter.""
The recording ended.
Emily stared at the device.
Michael looked as though he might collapse.
"That was before she died," he whispered.
Daniel checked the file information.
"Yes. The timestamp is October nineteenth, 2015.""
Emily remembered that date.
Her mother had died less than six months later.
She felt sick.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Michael looked at her.
"I never heard this recording.""
"Then who did?""
Daniel examined the recorder.
"Someone accessed it recently. The file history shows it was played twice this month.""
Emily turned toward the open storage unit.
"Vanessa.""
Daniel didn't answer.
A sudden sound echoed outside.
A vehicle door slammed.
Emily looked toward the entrance.
Through the narrow corridor, she saw a woman standing beneath the fluorescent lights.
Dark hair.
Long black coat.
A familiar face from the old photographs.
The woman stepped into the light.
"Emily?""
Emily stared.
"Claire?""
The woman nodded.
Her eyes were wet.
"I'm sorry I didn't come sooner.""
Michael stepped forward.
"Where's the jewelry box?""
Claire looked down.
Then she reached into her coat and pulled out a small brass key.
"Vanessa has the box," she said.
"But she doesn't have what's inside it.""
Emily swallowed.
"What was inside?""
Claire looked at her for a long moment.
May you like
Then she said:
"Your mother left a letter naming the person who tried to kill her.""
