Chapter 9: The Truth Everyone Was Afraid To Tell Me
I watched the video three times.
Not because I didn’t understand it.
Because I couldn’t accept it.
Daniel.
My brother.
The person who taught me how to ride a bike.
The person who stayed beside my hospital bed when I had surgery as a teenager.
The person who told me I deserved better when Ryan left.
That person was standing beside Ryan before the accident.
And the message was asking me why he let Ryan live.
I looked up.
Daniel was still standing near the window.
He wasn’t moving.
He wasn’t defending himself.
That scared me more than anger would have.
“Daniel.””
His eyes met mine.
I held up the phone.
“Explain.””
He closed his eyes.
A long breath escaped him.
“I knew this day would come.””
My chest tightened.
“Then you knew.””
“I knew you would find out eventually.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You knew because it was true.””
Daniel looked away.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to say my name.””
The hurt on his face almost broke me.
Almost.
But I had broken enough.
“I need the truth.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“You do.””
“Then tell me why you were with Ryan before the accident.””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because I was trying to stop him.””
The room became silent.
“Stop him from what?””
Daniel sat down.
“From leaving.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
He looked at me.
“Ryan wasn’t going to Jessica.””
My heart skipped.
“What?””
“He was pretending.””
I stared.
“Pretending?””
Daniel nodded.
“Jessica was part of the plan.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked confused too.
“What plan?”” I asked.
Daniel rubbed his face.
“The night Ryan left you, he wasn’t running away with Jessica.””
“Then what was he doing?””
“Running away from the people who were controlling him.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt anger rising.
“Daniel, stop.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“Stop making excuses for him.””
“I’m not.””
“Because that sounds exactly like what everyone has been doing.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I’m not saying Ryan was innocent.””
“Then what are you saying?””
“I’m saying Ryan was both.””
The answer confused me.
“Both?””
“A victim and someone who hurt people.””
I didn’t want to hear that.
Because it was easier when people were only one thing.
Good.
Bad.
Right.
Wrong.
But life was never that simple.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Ryan made terrible choices. He betrayed you. He stole from you. He lied.””
I swallowed.
“But?””
“But he also discovered someone was using him.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“Rachel.””
I felt exhausted.
Another name.
Another secret.
Another person behind another person.
“Rachel was controlling Ryan?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because she knew everything.””
Daniel continued.
“She knew about his debts. She knew about the money he took. She knew about the affair with Emily.””
Emily looked shocked.
“Then why didn’t she expose him?””
“Because she needed him.””
“For what?””
Daniel hesitated.
“To get access to you.””
I froze.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because you were the one person Ryan still protected.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Protected?””
“Yes.””
“By destroying me?””
Daniel looked down.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds insane.””
“I know.””
I turned away.
“I spent months thinking I wasn’t enough.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Sarah…”
“I thought he left because she was better.””
My voice cracked.
“I thought I lost to another woman.””
Daniel stayed quiet.
“Now you’re telling me I was just a target?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You were the target because Ryan loved you.””
The words hurt.
Because part of me wanted to believe them.
And that made me angry.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel’s face fell.
“Because Ryan asked me not to.””
I stared.
“You listened to him?””
“At first.””
“Why?””
“Because he showed me proof.””
“What proof?””
“That Rachel was watching you.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“She had been following your life for months.””
My skin went cold.
“The messages?””
“The questions?””
“The insurance?””
“Yes.””
I remembered Emily asking about my finances.
I remembered strange calls.
I remembered feeling like someone was always paying attention.
I thought I was imagining it.
I wasn’t.
“Ryan knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he leave?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Because he thought leaving you would protect you.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.””
Daniel didn’t disagree.
“It was.””
Emily stepped forward.
“There’s something you need to know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Ryan didn’t plan to go to Jessica’s apartment that night.””
I already knew where this was going.
“Where was he going?””
She looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
“To meet me.””
My heart tightened.
“Why?””
“To give me everything.””
“What everything?””
“Evidence.””
“Against who?””
“Rachel.””
I stared.
“Then why did he crash?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because someone followed him.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
That silence told me enough.
“Rachel?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I sat down.
Everything was too much.
Years of marriage.
Years of trust.
All collapsing.
Then Daniel said something I never expected.
“Sarah.””
I looked up.
“I need you to know something.””
“What?””
“The accident wasn’t the worst thing that happened.””
My expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“After the crash, Ryan was unconscious.””
“Yes.””
“Rachel came to the hospital.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She was there.””
“When?””
“The first night.””
My heart raced.
“What did she do?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She searched his room.””
“For what?””
“The evidence.””
I remembered Ryan saying someone broke into his hospital room.
“She stole everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“Almost everything.””
“Almost?””
He looked at me.
“Ryan hid one thing.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
The room became completely silent.
“A recording of what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Rachel talking to him.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Where is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
His eyes moved toward the evidence bag.
The key.
The one labeled with my name.
I picked it up.
“What does this open?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Ryan’s safety deposit box.””
I stared.
“He gave you the key?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””
The words hurt.
Because they were the exact words I had been feeling.
Nobody trusted anybody.
Nobody told the truth.
The entire world had become a room full of locked doors.
We went to the bank the next morning.
Daniel, Emily, and I.
Nobody spoke during the drive.
Not because we were angry.
Because there was nothing left to say.
At the bank, the manager recognized Ryan’s name.
After verifying the key, he brought out the box.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
A flash drive.
And one envelope.
My name was written on it.
*For Sarah.*
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Ryan’s handwriting.
Sarah,
If you’re reading this, then I failed.
I stopped.
Because those four words already hurt.
I continued.
I wanted to tell you the truth myself.
I wanted to explain everything before it destroyed you.
But I was too late.
The next lines made my breath catch.
I didn’t leave you because I stopped loving you.
I left because Rachel threatened your life.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
The letter continued.
She told me if I didn’t make you hate me, she would hurt you.
I thought making you hate me would keep you safe.
I thought if you believed I chose Jessica, you would never look closer.
I thought I was protecting you.
I was wrong.
My eyes filled with tears.
Because even after everything...
Even after all the betrayal...
Part of me knew Ryan.
The stubborn, foolish man who thought he could carry everything alone.
The letter continued.
But there is one thing I never told anyone.
Rachel wasn’t working alone.
My hands stopped.
A cold feeling moved through me.
I kept reading.
The person helping her is someone you would never suspect.
Someone who has been beside you.
Someone who knew your routines.
Your fears.
Your weaknesses.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Emily.
Then the letter.
The final line was written differently.
Like Ryan had been rushing.
*Sarah, the person who planned everything is not Rachel.*
I held my breath.
The next sentence made my entire body go cold.
*Rachel was only taking orders from someone else.*
At that exact moment, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
“Sarah.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
And I knew one thing.
May you like
The nightmare wasn’t ending.
It was finally revealing who started it.
