Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden In The Ring
The sound of the door handle stopped.
For one second, everything was silent.
Too silent.
I stood frozen in Daniel’s apartment, holding my phone against my ear.
Ryan was still shouting.
“Sarah?””
I couldn’t answer.
My eyes stayed fixed on the door.
The handle moved again.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Someone wasn’t knocking.
Someone was testing whether the door was locked.
Daniel immediately saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I raised one finger.
Don’t move.
Don’t speak.
His face changed.
He understood.
He grabbed the nearest object from the table—a heavy metal lamp—and moved toward the hallway.
I hated that I noticed how scared he looked.
Daniel had always been the person who made everyone else feel safe.
But now he looked afraid too.
And that scared me more.
The handle stopped.
Then came three soft knocks.
Not loud.
Not aggressive.
Almost polite.
Daniel looked at me.
Nobody who was supposed to be there would knock like that.
My phone was still connected.
Ryan whispered:
“Sarah, call the police.””
Before I could respond, Daniel mouthed something.
Wait.
I didn’t know why.
But I trusted him.
The knocking came again.
Three times.
Then a voice.
“Sarah?””
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
“Emily?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
He looked at me.
Then at the door.
Emily’s voice came again.
“Sarah, please open the door.””
I almost laughed.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the secrets.
She still sounded like the same person who used to sit beside me on my couch and talk about our futures.
“Why are you here?”” I shouted.
Silence.
Then:
“I need to explain.””
I stepped closer.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“She’s outside.””
“I know.””
“You said she might be dangerous.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you stopping me?””
“Because dangerous people don’t usually announce themselves.””
That was true.
But something inside me wanted answers.
Not revenge.
Not forgiveness.
Answers.
I walked closer to the door.
“Emily, how did you find me?””
No response.
Then:
“Daniel.””
My stomach tightened.
She knew.
“I saw him leave your house.””
Daniel cursed quietly.
“She followed me.””
Emily continued.
“Sarah, please. I’m not here to hurt you.””
I almost opened the door.
Almost.
Then I remembered every time someone had said those exact words before hurting me.
I stepped back.
“Leave.””
“Sarah—”
“Leave.””
My voice became stronger.
“You have taken enough from me.””
There was a pause.
Then Emily whispered:
“I know who caused the accident.””
Everyone kept saying that.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone had a reason.
But this time, something in her voice sounded different.
Not manipulative.
Desperate.
Daniel looked at me.
I shook my head.
Not yet.
“Prove it,” I said.
Silence.
Then something slid under the door.
A small envelope.
I stared at it.
Daniel picked it up carefully.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
The moment I saw it, I felt my stomach drop.
It was Ryan.
And Emily.
But not together.
Not romantically.
They were standing outside a building.
A building I recognized.
My doctor’s office.
The date was printed in the corner.
Two weeks before Ryan left me.
I looked at Emily through the door.
“What is this?””
Her voice shook.
“That’s the day I found out.””
“Found out what?””
“That Ryan wasn’t leaving you for me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“He was leaving because someone convinced him he had to.””
I stared at the door.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Your husband was being blackmailed.””
I opened the door.
Daniel immediately said:
“Sarah, no.””
But I ignored him.
Emily stood there.
She looked nothing like the confident woman I remembered.
Her hair was messy.
Her eyes were exhausted.
For the first time, she looked like someone who had lost control.
“Come inside,” I said.
Daniel looked angry.
“Are you serious?””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I’m serious about getting answers.””
Emily walked in slowly.
She sat down.
Nobody spoke.
Then I said:
“Start.””
She nodded.
“I met Ryan because of work.””
I crossed my arms.
“I know.””
“But what you don’t know is that someone introduced us.””
“Who?””
Emily looked at me.
“Your old business partner.””
I frowned.
“I don’t have a business partner.””
Emily hesitated.
“You did.””
My heart skipped.
“What?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Before you shut down your online store.””
I stared at her.
The store I had started after college.
The one I abandoned after Ryan told me it was too stressful.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
Emily looked down.
“Because someone wanted access to the accounts.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Who?””
Emily didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
My mind went back.
Back to years of conversations.
Years of trust.
Years of someone always knowing too much.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“Who?””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Ryan.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
Emily nodded.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
“Sarah—”
“No.””
I stood.
“You’re lying.””
Emily looked at me sadly.
“I wish I was.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why should we believe you?””
Emily looked at him.
“Because I have proof.””
She reached into her bag.
This time, she pulled out a folder.
She placed it on the table.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Bank records.
Messages.
I picked up the first page.
My hands started shaking.
There was Ryan’s name.
There was my name.
And there were transfers.
Large amounts.
Money moved from an account connected to my business.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know?””
He looked horrified.
“No.””
I turned back to Emily.
“How long?””
She swallowed.
“Years.””
My chest hurt.
Years.
Not months.
Not one mistake.
Years.
“What did he do?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“He borrowed money from your company account.””
“For what?””
“To cover his debts.””
I stared at the documents.
“But why leave me?””
Emily looked at me.
“Because someone found out.””
“Who?””
“Me.””
The room went quiet.
“I discovered what he had done.””
“And?””
“He threatened me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Ryan threatened you?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
Emily looked away.
“Evidence.””
“What evidence?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“About the affair.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“He used the affair to control her.””
Emily nodded.
“He told me if I didn’t cooperate, he would tell everyone I destroyed your marriage.””
I felt sick.
“So you both lied.””
“Yes.””
“But you stayed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was scared.””
I looked away.
For the first time, I understood something.
Fear could make people do terrible things.
But it didn’t erase responsibility.
“You hurt me.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe I wasn’t enough.””
Emily started crying.
“I know.””
I sat down.
Everything hurt.
Ryan.
Emily.
The years.
The memories.
All of it.
Then Daniel picked up one of the papers.
His face changed.
“Sarah.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He turned the document toward me.
“This date.””
I looked.
It was the date of the accident.
“What about it?””
Daniel pointed at the bottom.
There was a signature.
A name.
And my entire body went cold.
Because the person who signed the document wasn’t Ryan.
It wasn’t Emily.
It wasn’t even Jessica.
It was someone who had been protecting me since the beginning.
Someone who had claimed they were trying to save me.
Daniel whispered:
“Sarah…”
I looked at the signature.
And realized the person behind everything had been closer than I ever imagined.
May you like
Because the name written there was:
*Daniel Carter.*
