Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Message
I stared at the phone screen.
The words were simple.
Too simple.
But they felt heavier than any confession Ryan had made that night.
*Tell Sarah the truth before I do.*
My eyes moved from the message to Ryan’s face.
He looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Not angry.
Terrified.
“Who sent that?”” I asked.
Ryan didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stepped closer.
“Ryan.””
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“Sarah…”
“Don’t.””
I pointed at the screen.
“Do not stand there and act like you’re protecting me. I have spent months being the last person to know everything.””
Evelyn looked between us.
“What’s happening?””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Then I looked back at Ryan.
“But apparently everyone else does.””
Ryan slowly lowered his phone.
“I didn’t want you involved.””
I laughed quietly.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“You didn’t want me involved?””
My voice rose.
“You brought your wheelchair to my front door. Your mother tried to move you into my house. You made me responsible for a disaster I didn’t create.””
Ryan flinched.
“And now you’re telling me I’m involved?””
The silence that followed was painful.
Because he knew I was right.
“Who sent the message?”” I asked again.
Ryan looked at the floor.
“Your brother.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Daniel.””
The room seemed to shift.
My brother.
Daniel.
The same person who had spent the last three months telling me to move on.
The same person who sat with me after Ryan left.
The same person who told me, “Some people show you who they really are when they stop needing you.””
I stared at Ryan.
“Why would Daniel know anything?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than the message.
“Ryan.””
He took a deep breath.
“Because Daniel was the one who found out about Jessica.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What are you talking about?””
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
“He saw something.””
“When?””
“The week before I left.””
My stomach tightened.
The week before he left.
The week before my marriage ended.
“Tell me everything.””
Ryan looked toward the window.
“I was supposed to meet Jessica after work.””
I hated hearing her name.
But I stayed silent.
“She canceled because she said she was busy.””
Ryan paused.
“Later that night, I saw Daniel.””
My heartbeat increased.
“My brother?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Ryan rubbed his hands together.
“He told me Jessica wasn’t who I thought she was.””
I shook my head.
“And you believed him?””
Ryan looked ashamed.
“No.””
Of course he didn’t.
Because he had already made his decision.
“What did you do?””
“I accused him of trying to ruin my relationship.””
The words sat there.
Heavy.
I closed my eyes.
My brother tried to warn him.
And Ryan ignored him.
“I thought he was jealous,” Ryan said.
“Jealous?””
“He was angry that I was leaving you.””
I stared at him.
“My brother was angry because you were betraying me.””
Ryan nodded.
“I know that now.””
I walked away from him and sat on the edge of the couch.
Everything was becoming connected.
Every piece I thought I understood was changing shape.
“Why didn’t Daniel tell me?””
Ryan looked surprised.
“He didn’t?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
That bothered me.
A lot.
Because Daniel had always protected me.
But if he knew Ryan was hiding something…
Why had he stayed quiet?
“What exactly did he find?””
Ryan hesitated.
“Pictures.””
“What kind of pictures?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Jessica with someone else.””
I felt a strange chill.
“Her ex?””
Ryan nodded.
“Probably.””
“Probably?””
“He didn’t know who the man was at the time.””
I stood up.
“So Daniel knew Jessica was cheating before I did?””
“Yes.””
“And he still didn’t tell me?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
But I already knew.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Daniel’s name appeared on the screen.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Ryan whispered:
“Answer it.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because he knows.””
The phone kept ringing.
I finally picked it up.
“Daniel?””
There was silence.
Not normal silence.
The kind where someone is deciding how much damage they are about to cause.
“Sarah.””
His voice sounded tired.
“Why did you text Ryan?””
Another pause.
“So he finally told you.””
My heart sank.
“Daniel, what is going on?””
I heard him breathe.
“I was hoping you’d never have to know.””
My anger immediately replaced the confusion.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I walked toward the kitchen.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
“Sarah—”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I need the truth.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“Okay.””
One word.
But it sounded like a door opening.
“The night Ryan left you, he wasn’t supposed to go to Jessica’s apartment.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was supposed to meet someone else.””
I looked at Ryan.
He looked shocked.
“What are you talking about?”” I asked.
Daniel continued.
“Jessica wasn’t the first person he was involved with.””
The room went completely silent.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What?””
Ryan stood up as much as he could in the wheelchair.
“Daniel, don’t.””
I turned toward him.
“Don’t what?””
Ryan’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not about his accident.
About me knowing.
“Ryan?””
He looked away.
And that was the moment I understood.
There was more.
So much more.
“Daniel,” I said slowly.
“Who was it?””
My brother didn’t answer immediately.
When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet.
“It was someone close to you.””
My blood went cold.
“Who?””
“Sarah…”
“Who?””
The silence stretched.
Then Daniel said a name.
A name that made me feel like the floor had disappeared beneath me.
“Your best friend, Emily.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
I said it immediately.
Not because I knew it wasn’t true.
Because I needed it not to be.
“Daniel, no.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I looked at Ryan.
He wasn’t denying it.
That hurt more.
“Ryan?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Sarah…”
The sound of my own name from his mouth made me angry.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Ryan stayed silent.
That silence was the answer.
I felt something inside me break.
Not the same way it broke the night he left.
That pain was sharp.
This was different.
This was realizing the entire story I had been mourning was incomplete.
“I want you to leave.””
Ryan looked at me.
“Sarah—”
“Leave.””
“I can explain.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the door.
“You don’t get to explain years of betrayal in one conversation.””
Evelyn stood.
“Sarah, please.””
I looked at her.
“Did you know?””
Her face changed.
And that was all I needed.
“You knew.””
“I found out after the accident.””
“But you knew.””
She looked down.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“Nobody ever knows how to tell me anything.””
Ryan’s phone rang again.
This time, he ignored it.
I didn’t.
“Answer it.””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“Answer it.””
Something about the timing felt wrong.
He hesitated.
Then he picked up.
“Hello?””
His face changed within seconds.
The little color he had returned disappeared.
“What happened?””
He listened.
Then he looked at me.
“Sarah…”
I felt my stomach drop.
“What?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
“It’s Jessica.””
I didn’t react.
I didn’t want to.
“What about her?””
“She’s been found.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ryan added:
“She wants to meet you.””
I almost laughed.
“Me?””
He nodded.
“She said she knows who caused the accident.””
The room went quiet.
“And she said…”
Ryan looked at me.
“She said the person who caused the crash is someone you trust.””
I stared at him.
Another secret.
Another person.
May you like
Another betrayal waiting behind a door I hadn’t opened yet.
And this time, I wasn’t sure I wanted to know what was on the other side.
