Chapter 2: The Passenger Nobody Knew About
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
Ryan’s words hung in the air between us.
Jessica wasn’t the only person in the car with me.
I stared at him, waiting for him to explain.
Waiting for him to say something that made sense.
But Ryan just looked broken.
Not the kind of broken I had expected.
Not the kind that came from losing his ability to walk.
This was different.
This was fear.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Evelyn looked at Ryan.
“Ryan…”
He immediately looked away.
That told me everything.
There was something they weren’t telling me.
Something they had kept hidden.
I opened the door wider.
“Get inside.””
Evelyn looked surprised.
Maybe she thought I was accepting them.
She was wrong.
“I said get inside because I want answers,” I said.
“Not because you’re staying here.””
Ryan lowered his head.
His mother pushed his wheelchair across the doorway while I stepped aside.
The irony wasn’t lost on me.
Three weeks earlier, I had walked into his hospital room hoping to find closure.
Now he was sitting inside my house again.
But he wasn’t my husband.
Not anymore.
He was a stranger carrying a secret.
I closed the door.
The same door he had walked out of months ago.
Only this time, I was the one deciding what happened next.
Ryan sat in the living room.
The room looked exactly the same.
The same couch.
The same coffee table.
The same framed pictures.
Except everything felt different.
I stood across from him.
“Talk.””
Ryan’s hands tightened around the armrests of his wheelchair.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to start with my name like that. You don’t get to make this emotional before you tell me the truth.””
Evelyn sat down slowly.
Her face was pale.
“I wanted to tell you.””
I looked at her.
“But you didn’t.””
She looked down.
“No.””
“Why?””
Neither of them answered.
That silence made my anger rise.
“Why did you let me think Jessica was the only problem?””
Ryan closed his eyes.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I almost laughed.
“Now you’re ashamed?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
I crossed my arms.
“Explain.””
Ryan took a long breath.
“The night of the accident, Jessica and I weren’t just driving home.””
My stomach tightened.
“What were you doing?””
He looked at me.
“We were arguing.””
“About what?””
“About us.””
I waited.
Ryan swallowed.
“She was angry because I wouldn’t leave you officially.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
“You mean the divorce papers?””
He nodded.
“She wanted me to finish it.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“So she was tired of waiting?””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
Ryan looked down.
“I was confused.””
I stared at him.
Confused.
That word.
After destroying everything.
After choosing another woman.
He was confused.
“You weren’t confused when you packed your bags.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice became sharper.
“You don’t know what it felt like watching you leave. You don’t know what it felt like waking up every morning and remembering that my husband chose someone else.””
Ryan said nothing.
For once, he didn’t try to defend himself.
Good.
He didn’t deserve to.
“So what happened in the car?””
Ryan looked toward his mother.
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Tell her.””
He took a deep breath.
“Jessica wasn’t alone in the car because there was another person.””
“Who?””
Ryan’s expression changed.
“She had been seeing someone else.””
The room went silent.
I blinked.
“What?””
Ryan nodded.
“I found out that night.””
I stared at him.
“You’re saying Jessica was cheating on you?””
“Yes.””
The strangest emotion passed through me.
Not satisfaction.
Not happiness.
Just exhaustion.
I had spent months feeling replaced.
And now I was learning the woman Ryan destroyed our marriage for had betrayed him too.
“How did you find out?””
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
“She got a text while we were driving.””
“From who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then how do you know?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because she admitted it.””
The rain tapped against the windows.
Slowly.
Steadily.
Like it was counting every second of the silence.
“She told you while you were driving?””
“Yes.””
“And you were arguing?””
“Yes.””
“Then what?””
Ryan looked down at his legs.
“We were yelling.””
His voice became quieter.
“She said she never planned to stay with me forever.””
I watched his face.
For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Humiliation.
“She said I was useful.””
The words came out like they hurt.
“Useful?””
Ryan nodded.
“She said I helped her get away from her old relationship. She said she liked the attention. She liked having someone who would do anything for her.””
I felt a strange heaviness in my chest.
Not because I felt sorry for him.
Not completely.
But because I understood something.
Ryan had destroyed our marriage chasing a fantasy.
And now that fantasy had collapsed.
“What does this have to do with the accident?””
Ryan looked toward the floor.
“She wasn’t the only one in the car because…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Because there was someone in the back seat.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
Then he whispered:
“Her ex-boyfriend.””
I stood there frozen.
Jessica’s ex-boyfriend.
The person I didn’t even know existed.
The person who had been in the same car when Ryan crashed.
“Why was he there?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I swear.””
I studied his face.
I wanted to believe he was lying.
It would have been easier.
Because if he was telling the truth, it meant the world I understood had been built on even more lies than I thought.
“Where is Jessica now?””
Ryan looked away.
“She disappeared.””
“Of course she did.””
Evelyn spoke quietly.
“She left the hospital the morning after Ryan woke up.””
I looked at her.
“And you still expected me to take care of him?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was desperate.””
“No.””
My voice softened slightly.
“But you were still wrong.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
That was the first honest thing she had said.
An hour later, Ryan was still in my living room.
I had not agreed to let him stay.
I had not forgiven him.
I had not forgotten anything.
But I also hadn’t thrown him back into the rain.
And I hated that part of myself.
Because some piece of me still remembered the man he used to be.
The man who held my hand during thunderstorms because he knew I hated them.
The man who cooked terrible pasta every Friday night because he knew it made me laugh.
The man who had once been my safest place.
And then he became the person who hurt me the most.
“Why come here?”” I asked.
Ryan looked at me.
“Because I had nowhere else.””
I nodded slowly.
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked down.
“Because I was wrong.””
I almost interrupted.
But he continued.
“I thought I was unhappy because of you.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I thought leaving would make me feel free.””
He swallowed.
“But after everything happened… after Jessica left… after the accident…”
His voice cracked.
“I realized I didn’t lose my marriage because I found someone better.””
He looked at me.
“I lost it because I stopped appreciating what I had.””
I looked away.
Those words would have destroyed me months ago.
Now they just made me tired.
“Ryan, regret doesn’t rebuild anything.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I know I don’t deserve another chance.””
For once, I believed him.
But then his phone rang.
Everyone looked toward the sound.
Ryan’s expression changed when he saw the screen.
“What is it?”” Evelyn asked.
He didn’t answer.
The color drained from his face.
I noticed his hand shaking.
“Ryan?””
Slowly, he turned the phone toward us.
There was a message.
One sentence.
One name.
And the name on the screen made my heart stop.
Because it wasn’t Jessica.
It wasn’t her ex-boyfriend.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who had been standing beside me the entire time.
May you like
The message read:
*“Tell Sarah the truth before I do.””*
