Chapter 7: The Brother Who Carried The Secret

I stared at the signature.

Daniel Carter.

My brother’s name.

Written clearly at the bottom of the document.

For a moment, my brain refused to process it.

It was easier to believe in strangers.

Easier to believe in Ryan.

Easier to believe in Emily.

But Daniel?

No.

Not Daniel.

“Explain.””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

Daniel didn’t move.

He looked at the paper.

Then at me.

Then away.

That was enough.

The silence hurt more than an admission.

“Daniel.””

His face tightened.

“Sarah…”

“Explain.””

Emily stood slowly.

“I should leave.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She stopped.

“You stay.””

I pointed at the document.

“Everyone has been deciding what I deserve to know.””

My hands shook.

“Not anymore.””

Daniel sat down.

For the first time in my life, I saw him look small.

Not weak.

Not guilty.

Just exhausted.

“I can explain.””

I laughed softly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Did you sign this?””

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

No excuses.

No denial.

Just yes.

I felt something crack inside me.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I stood up immediately.

“No.””

My voice was sharp.

“Do not use that sentence.””

“Sarah—”

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You don’t get to hide behind that.””

Emily looked uncomfortable.

Daniel lowered his head.

“I knew you would hate me.””

“I don’t hate you.””

That surprised him.

“I’m disappointed.””

His eyes filled slightly.

“That’s worse.””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

Because it was true.

Anger was easy.

Disappointment was what happened when someone you trusted failed you.

“Start from the beginning,” I said.

Daniel nodded.

“Two years ago, I found out Ryan was in financial trouble.””

I frowned.

“Financial trouble?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He had debts.””

“From what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Investments.””

I stared at him.

“Ryan never invested.””

Daniel looked away.

“Exactly.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he invest in?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I found payments leaving your business account.””

I felt sick.

“The store?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was taking money.””

“How much?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

“How much, Daniel?””

“Almost eighty thousand dollars.””

The room became silent.

I sat down slowly.

Eighty thousand.

Money I had saved.

Money from years of work.

Money I thought was safe.

“He stole from me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

The anger returned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t have enough proof.””

I stared at him.

“You had enough to know.””

“Yes.””

“You had enough to let me make my own decision.””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I wiped my eyes.

“You watched me sleep next to someone who was betraying me.””

“I was trying to find out how deep it went.””

“And while you investigated, I lived a lie.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

Emily spoke quietly.

“He wasn’t the only one investigating.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at Daniel.

“You never told her about the meeting.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What meeting?””

Emily looked at me.

“The meeting between Daniel and Ryan.””

I turned.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“When?””

“Before Ryan left.””

“Where?””

“At a restaurant.””

I stared at him.

“You met him?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“No.””

My hands clenched.

“What happened?””

Daniel took a breath.

“I confronted him.””

“About the money?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He admitted some of it.””

I shook my head.

“Some?””

“He said he was going to fix it.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

Daniel continued.

“But then he told me something else.””

“What?””

His face changed.

“He said if I exposed him, you would lose everything.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Ryan had already moved things around.””

My heart sank.

“What things?””

“The house.””

I froze.

“What about the house?””

Daniel looked at me.

“He had started paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

“To transfer ownership.””

I felt cold.

“Our house?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was trying to protect himself.””

I looked at Emily.

She whispered:

“From the divorce.””

I couldn’t believe it.

The man who left me had already planned how to leave with as much as possible.

“He wasn’t leaving me for Jessica.””

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“He was leaving because he was exposed.””

“Yes.””

I walked to the window.

The city lights blurred through the glass.

My entire marriage was becoming a stranger.

I thought back to that night.

The night Ryan stood in our kitchen.

The night he said:

“I love Jessica.””

Maybe that wasn’t the whole truth.

Maybe it was just the version that made him look better.

A man who left because he fell in love.

Not a man who ran because he was caught.

“Why Jessica?””

Emily answered.

“Because she was useful.””

I turned.

“What?””

Emily looked down.

“She was the perfect distraction.””

I felt disgusted.

“From what?””

“From the money.””

Daniel nodded.

“Everyone focused on the affair.””

“And nobody looked at the finances.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

A plan.

A terrible, carefully built plan.

But then something didn’t make sense.

“The accident.””

Everyone became quiet.

I looked at Daniel.

“What happened?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.””

“You signed that document.””

“Yes.””

“What was it?””

Daniel looked at the paper.

“A warning.””

“A warning?””

“Yes.””

I walked back.

“Explain.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“After I confronted Ryan, he gave me information.””

“What information?””

“That he was being threatened.””

“By who?””

“He didn’t know.””

I frowned.

“He didn’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why was he scared?””

“Because someone knew about the money.””

I looked at Emily.

“And you?””

She nodded.

“I knew too.””

Daniel continued.

“Ryan wanted to confess.””

“To me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night of the accident.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Then why didn’t he?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because he crashed before he could.””

The room went silent.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?””

No one spoke.

Just breathing.

Then a voice.

A voice I recognized.

My blood froze.

“Sarah.””

I stood still.

“Ryan?””

Daniel looked at me.

“What is it?””

Ryan’s voice came through the phone.

“Listen carefully.””

His breathing sounded rushed.

“Someone is lying to you.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What?””

Ryan continued.

“The accident wasn’t because of Emily.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Then who?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who caused it knew exactly where I was going.””

I swallowed.

“Where were you going?””

Another pause.

Then Ryan whispered:

“To meet you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“I was going to your house.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Ryan’s voice broke.

“Because I found proof.””

“Proof of what?””

I heard movement on his end.

Like he was afraid someone was nearby.

“Proof that Daniel…”

The line crackled.

“Ryan?””

His voice became urgent.

“Sarah, don’t trust—”

The call suddenly cut off.

I stared at the phone.

Then everyone heard it.

A loud crash.

Not from my phone.

From outside.

Daniel ran toward the window.

His face changed.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What happened?””

He looked down at the street.

A car had stopped in front of the building.

The driver’s door was open.

And someone was standing outside.

Looking directly up at Daniel’s apartment.

Even from several floors above, I recognized her.

Emily whispered:

“No.””

I turned.

“What?””

Her face had gone pale.

“That’s impossible.””

“Who is it?””

She couldn’t take her eyes off the window.

May you like

Then she said the words that made my blood run cold.

“Because she’s supposed to be dead.””
