Chapter 4: The Woman Who Stole My Marriage

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because every time I closed my eyes, another memory changed.

A dinner with Emily.

A conversation with Ryan.

A simple moment I once believed was harmless.

Everything looked different now.

That was the cruelest part about betrayal.

It didn’t just destroy the present.

It reached backward and poisoned the past.

At 3:17 in the morning, I sat on the edge of my bed staring at my phone.

There were three messages.

One from Daniel.

One from Ryan.

One from a number I didn’t recognize.

I opened Ryan’s first.

*I know you hate me right now. I understand why. But please meet Jessica. You deserve to know the truth.*

I almost deleted it.

Almost.

Then I opened Daniel’s.

*I’m sorry, Sarah. I should have told you sooner. I was trying to protect you. I made the wrong choice.*

I stared at that sentence for a long time.

Protect me.

Everyone kept using those words.

As if hiding the truth was some kind of kindness.

As if I was too fragile to survive reality.

I opened the last message.

The unknown number.

It contained only one line.

*I know what Ryan did. I know what Emily did. Come alone if you want the whole story.*

No name.

No explanation.

Just another secret.

Another person controlling the truth.

I threw my phone onto the bed.

For years, I had thought my marriage ended because Ryan fell in love with someone else.

Now I wasn’t even sure when it had actually started falling apart.

The next morning, I drove to the café where Jessica wanted to meet.

I almost turned around twice.

The first time when I reached the parking lot.

The second time when I saw her sitting by the window.

Jessica looked different.

Not because she had changed.

Because I finally saw her clearly.

Before, I had only seen the woman who took my husband.

Now I saw someone who looked exhausted.

Scared.

She stood when I walked in.

“Sarah.””

I stayed standing.

“Don’t say my name like we’re friends.””

Her face tightened.

“I know.””

“Good.””

She nodded.

“I deserve that.””

I almost laughed.

That was becoming a pattern.

Everyone who hurt me suddenly understood after the damage was done.

I sat across from her.

“Talk.””

Jessica looked down at her hands.

“I don’t know where to start.””

“Start with why you destroyed my marriage.””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t plan for it to happen.””

I stared at her.

“Neither did Ryan, apparently.””

The guilt on her face deepened.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“That’s what people say when they accidentally break a glass.””

I leaned forward.

“You didn’t make a mistake. You made choices.””

Jessica looked away.

For once, she didn’t argue.

“You’re right.””

I waited.

She took a deep breath.

“I met Ryan when I was going through a difficult time.””

I almost rolled my eyes.

The beginning of every affair story.

Someone was unhappy.

Someone felt ignored.

Someone wanted attention.

“I didn’t know how serious he was about leaving you at first.””

I froze.

“What?””

Jessica looked at me.

“Ryan told me your marriage was already over.””

I felt anger rise.

“He told you that?””

“Yes.””

“He was still sleeping next to me.””

Her eyes dropped.

“I know.””

“He was still telling me he loved me.””

“I know.””

The café suddenly felt too small.

Too quiet.

“You knew?””

Jessica whispered:

“Not at the beginning.””

I watched her carefully.

“Then when?””

She hesitated.

“After I met you.””

My stomach turned.

The memories came rushing back.

Jessica sitting in my living room.

Jessica laughing at my jokes.

Jessica pretending.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“And you still came to my house.””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand people like you.””

Jessica looked down.

“I don’t understand myself either.””

That answer should have made me angry.

Instead, it just made me tired.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

She looked toward the window.

“Because Ryan wasn’t the only person who lied.””

I waited.

“Emily knew.””

My heart sank.

“I already know she was involved.””

Jessica looked surprised.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Then you don’t know everything.””

I felt cold.

“What else?””

Jessica reached into her bag.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“What is that?””

“Proof.””

I didn’t touch it.

“Of what?””

Jessica looked directly at me.

“That Ryan and Emily were together before he ever met me.””

I couldn’t speak.

“No.””

Jessica nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside were printed photographs.

My hands shook.

The first picture showed Ryan.

The second showed Emily.

Together.

Not at a group event.

Not somewhere innocent.

They were outside a hotel.

The date was visible.

Six months before Ryan left me.

Six months before he told me he loved Jessica.

My vision blurred.

“No.””

I said it again.

Because my mind couldn’t accept what my eyes were seeing.

Jessica watched quietly.

“I found those after the accident.””

“Why?””

“Because I was looking through Ryan’s things.””

I looked up.

“You searched his things?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her expression changed.

“Because after the accident, I realized I didn’t know him either.””

That sentence hit harder than I expected.

Because it was the same feeling I had.

Ryan had not just betrayed me.

He had created a version of himself that nobody truly knew.

“Why would Emily do this?””

Jessica looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the photos again.

My best friend.

The person who held me while I cried after Ryan left.

The person who told me I deserved better.

The person who knew every detail of my marriage.

She knew exactly where to hurt me.

“Where is she now?””

Jessica hesitated.

“She disappeared.””

“Everyone disappears.””

My voice cracked.

“Ryan disappeared. Jessica disappeared. Now Emily?””

Jessica looked at me.

“Sarah.””

I looked up.

“There’s something else.””

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

“What?””

Jessica took a shaky breath.

“The accident wasn’t random.””

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying someone wanted Ryan gone.””

The words chilled me.

“Gone?””

“Yes.””

“Dead?””

Jessica nodded slowly.

“That’s what the police are investigating.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

And then she said:

“The person who caused the crash knew Ryan was going to reveal something.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What was he going to reveal?””

Jessica’s expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

“You came here because you know something.””

“I came here because I think you’re in danger too.””

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“My marriage was destroyed. My husband cheated. My best friend betrayed me. And now you’re telling me someone might hurt me?””

Jessica leaned closer.

“I’m serious.””

I looked at her.

“Why should I believe you?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Because the night before the accident, Ryan called me.””

I waited.

“He wasn’t calling to apologize.””

“Then why?””

Jessica’s voice dropped.

“He was calling because he found out who Emily was really working with.””

The room went silent.

“Working with?””

Jessica nodded.

“She wasn’t just having an affair with Ryan.””

My blood ran cold.

“What was she doing?””

Jessica looked toward the door.

Almost like she was afraid someone was listening.

“She was using him.””

“For what?””

Jessica opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Her phone suddenly buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

And all the color disappeared from her face.

“What?””

She slowly turned the phone toward me.

It was a message.

From Emily.

One sentence.

*You should have stayed quiet, Jessica.*

I looked at the screen.

Then at Jessica.

Because for the first time since this nightmare began, I saw something that frightened me more than betrayal.

Fear.

Real fear.

And then Jessica whispered:

“Sarah… she knows you’re here.””
