Chapter 9: The Letter That Was Never Delivered
The following morning, Robert sat in a lawyer's office holding a cup of untouched coffee.
He hadn't slept.
Every time he closed his eyes, he heard Helen's voice from the recording.
Tell Robert.
Those two words had followed him through the night.
Across the desk sat Daniel Foster, the attorney who had contacted him.
Detective Harris stood near the window, reviewing a folder.
Evelyn was not there.
Marcus was still at the police station.
And Vanessa had requested legal representation before answering further questions.
Daniel opened a large envelope.
“Mr. Williams, your brother left detailed instructions concerning these documents.””
Robert stared at the envelope.
“Did he explain why he kept them?””
“Yes. He believed he had helped conceal a crime. Before his death, he wanted to make sure the truth would eventually reach you.””
Daniel removed a small leather case.
Robert recognized it immediately.
It was Helen's.
The same case shown in the photograph.
His hands trembled as Daniel placed it on the desk.
“Your brother recovered this from the crash scene,” Daniel explained.
“He kept it in a locked cabinet for years.””
Robert opened the case.
Inside were a few photographs, a folded handkerchief, and a small envelope.
His name was written across the front.
*For Robert. Only if I'm gone.*
He stared at the handwriting.
“Is this the letter Evelyn mentioned?””
Daniel nodded.
“It appears to be.””
Robert opened it carefully.
The paper was yellowed.
The handwriting was slightly uneven, but unmistakably Helen's.
He began reading.
My dearest Robert,
If you're reading this, then something has happened that I could not prevent.
I need you to understand that I have never stopped loving you. Whatever you hear about me, whatever anyone tells you, please remember that I wanted to come home.
Robert paused.
His eyes filled.
Daniel quietly pushed a box of tissues across the desk.
Robert continued.
There is something I have been afraid to tell you. Evelyn has been visiting me for months. At first, she said she wanted to help because she knew how much I worried about Marcus.
But I discovered that she had been meeting him privately.
Robert stopped reading.
He looked up.
“Meeting Marcus?””
Daniel nodded.
“Please continue.””
Robert lowered his eyes.
She told Marcus that you would eventually leave me. She told him that he could have a better life if I wasn't standing between you and her.
Robert's hands began shaking.
I didn't believe it at first. But I found photographs, letters, and bank records. Evelyn had been helping Vanessa move money through Marcus's accounts.
I confronted her. She denied everything.
Then she told me something I still cannot believe.
Robert swallowed.
The next paragraph was short.
Evelyn told me she was carrying your child.
Robert's breath caught.
He stared at the page.
Then he read it again.
And again.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Are you all right?””
Robert couldn't answer.
For twenty years, he and Evelyn had never had children together.
They had tried.
They had attended appointments.
They had suffered miscarriages.
And eventually, they had stopped talking about it.
But Helen's letter suggested that Evelyn had been pregnant before Helen died.
Robert forced himself to continue.
She told me the baby was yours. She said you had promised to leave me.
Robert lowered the letter.
“No.””
Daniel remained silent.
Robert looked at him.
“That's impossible.””
Daniel spoke gently.
“Did you know Evelyn was pregnant around that time?””
Robert shook his head.
“She told me she had suffered a miscarriage years earlier. But she never said anything about being pregnant before Helen died.””
He looked back at the letter.
I don't know whether she's telling the truth. I only know that she has been using our son to get closer to you. And I believe Vanessa is helping her.
Please, Robert, don't let them turn Marcus against you.
If you ever find out that Evelyn has been lying, ask her about the baby.
The letter ended with three words.
Forgive our son.
Robert lowered the paper.
For a long time, he didn't move.
Then he whispered, “She knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“She suspected something.””
Robert looked at the detective.
“Can we find out whether Evelyn was pregnant?””
Detective Harris answered carefully.
“We can investigate the medical records and the statements. But we'll need to establish what records still exist and whether they're relevant to the current investigation.””
Robert nodded.
“Then I want the truth.””
Daniel opened another folder.
“There's something else your brother left.””
He removed a photograph.
It showed Evelyn standing outside a medical clinic.
Beside her was a man Robert recognized.
David.
His younger brother.
Robert stared at the image.
“Why were they together?””
Daniel handed him a second photograph.
This one showed David entering the clinic alone.
The date was written on the back.
October 14.
The day Helen died.
Robert felt his stomach tighten.
“Was David involved with Evelyn?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know. But your brother's confession suggests they had a private arrangement.””
Detective Harris studied the photographs.
“Mr. Foster, do you have the complete statement?””
“Yes.””
Daniel opened a sealed document.
It was several pages long.
The first page contained David's signature.
The second contained a handwritten account.
Robert began reading.
David admitted that he had arrived at the accident scene after receiving a call from Evelyn.
He had found Helen injured but conscious.
He had also found Vanessa searching through the passenger compartment.
According to the statement, David had helped remove Helen's leather case before emergency services arrived.
But the most disturbing paragraph appeared near the end.
Evelyn told me the plan was only to frighten Helen into leaving Robert. She said the car would not be driven far, and that Marcus would make sure nobody got hurt.
Robert looked up.
“David knew about the damaged brakes?””
Daniel nodded.
“He says he discovered the damage afterward.””
Robert continued.
I asked Evelyn why she had called me. She said Helen had become suspicious about the insurance policy and that Vanessa was going to expose everything. She begged me to help remove the documents before the police arrived.
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“What documents?””
Daniel turned to the final page.
“Your brother believed the original insurance beneficiary form was among the missing papers.””
Robert read the next line.
I found another document in Helen's case. It was a second insurance policy. The beneficiary was not Evelyn.
Robert stopped.
“Who was it?””
Daniel pointed to the attached copy.
Robert looked down.
The beneficiary was Marcus.
But beneath his son's name was another name.
Vanessa Williams.
The policy had been arranged through a company that no longer existed.
Robert looked at Detective Harris.
“Was this policy ever paid?””
The detective examined the document.
“We'll need to verify it.””
Daniel nodded.
“David believed the payment was made through an intermediary.””
Robert stared.
“How much?””
Daniel turned another page.
“Five hundred thousand dollars.””
Robert felt his stomach turn.
Half a million dollars.
That was more than enough to explain why Vanessa had stayed connected to Marcus.
But the question was why Evelyn had been involved.
He looked at the photographs again.
“Did David say anything about the baby?””
Daniel became quiet.
“Yes.””
Robert's heart began pounding.
“What?””
Daniel removed one final envelope.
“This was attached to the confession.””
Robert opened it.
Inside was a medical document from a private clinic.
The patient's name was Evelyn Williams.
The date was twenty years earlier.
The document confirmed a pregnancy test.
But there was another page.
A handwritten note from David.
The child was born. Evelyn told everyone the baby died shortly after birth. I was asked to arrange the burial records.
Robert stared at the words.
“Evelyn had a baby?””
Daniel nodded.
“According to your brother's statement, yes.””
Robert felt his breathing become shallow.
“Where is the child?””
Daniel looked at Detective Harris.
“We don't know.””
Robert turned the page.
There was a name.
A date of birth.
And a hospital number.
He read the name aloud.
“Sarah.””
The room went silent.
Robert remembered the name.
A little girl who had lived next door to his brother for several years.
A child David had occasionally mentioned.
He had always assumed she was the daughter of a family friend.
Robert looked up.
“Sarah was David's daughter?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. Your brother's statement says she was Evelyn's child.””
Robert stared.
“Then why did she live with David?””
“Because he claimed he was protecting her.””
Detective Harris took the document.
“Do you know where Sarah is now?””
Daniel opened another file.
“David left a forwarding address. She currently lives in another state.””
Robert slowly sat back.
“Does she know who her mother is?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Apparently not.””
Robert looked at the medical document.
A child had been born.
A child had been hidden.
And somewhere in the world, a woman named Sarah might have spent her entire life believing a different story about her family.
Then Daniel removed one final item.
A small photograph.
It showed a young woman standing outside a university building.
On the back, David had written:
*Sarah, age 19. The truth must never reach her until it is safe.*
Robert stared at the photograph.
The young woman had dark hair and a familiar smile.
He knew that smile.
He had seen it in the mirror every morning for seventy years.
It was his.
Robert looked at Daniel.
“Are you telling me Sarah is my daughter?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Your brother's confession says she is.””
Robert couldn't speak.
He looked at the photograph again.
For twenty years, he had believed Marcus was his only child.
Now he was discovering that another child might have existed all along.
A daughter.
One who had been kept from him.
One who might never have known his name.
Detective Harris closed the folder.
“Mr. Williams, we'll need to verify the medical records and establish the circumstances of the birth. We should not contact her until we know how to handle this properly.””
Robert nodded.
Then his phone rang.
The screen displayed an unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A young woman's voice came through.
“Mr. Williams?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Sarah.””
Robert's heart stopped.
She continued.
“I think you might be my father.””
He gripped the edge of the desk.
“Where did you get this number?””
“My uncle David left me a letter. He told me to call you if anything happened to him.””
Robert struggled to speak.
“Sarah, do you know about your mother?””
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Who is she?””
Sarah began crying.
“Her name is Evelyn Williams.””
Robert looked toward Detective Harris.
Then back at the photograph.
Sarah continued.
“But there's something else you need to know.””
Robert's voice trembled.
“What?””
“My mother told me you died twenty years ago.””
The phone nearly slipped from his hand.
Sarah took a shaky breath.
“And she told me that Marcus was my brother.””
Robert stared at the photograph.
A daughter he had never known.
A son who had helped conceal her existence.
A wife who had spent twenty years hiding the truth.
And somewhere in the middle of all that deception was one final secret.
“Sarah,” he whispered, “I need to see you.””
She cried softly.
“I know. But before we meet, there's something Uncle David told me to ask you.””
“What?””
“Did you ever sign a document giving up your parental rights?””
Robert frowned.
“No.””
Sarah's voice broke.
“Then why does my birth certificate say you did?””
Robert looked at Daniel.
Daniel slowly reached for the file.
And on the final page was a document bearing Robert's signature.
The same signature that had appeared on the forged property transfer.
Except this document was dated twenty years earlier.
Robert stared at it.
Then he whispered:
“Someone has been forging my name for much longer than I ever imagined.””
May you like
And suddenly, the theft of his house was no longer the beginning of the nightmare.
It was only the latest chapter of a betrayal that had started before Helen's death.
