Chapter 1: The Secret Behind the Locked Door

“Vanessa… wait a minute.””

Marcus's voice had changed.

Downstairs, Robert slowly lifted his head from the kitchen table.

For the first time since the screaming began, the house had gone quiet.

No sobbing. No accusations. No footsteps.

Just silence.

Then Marcus spoke again.

“Why is there blood on your sleeve?””

Vanessa immediately looked down.

Robert stood up so quickly that his chair scraped against the kitchen floor.

Blood?

He hadn't seen any blood.

“What blood?”” Vanessa asked, her voice suddenly thin.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Right here. On your left sleeve.””

Vanessa pulled her arm against her stomach.

“Oh, it's nothing, baby. I must have scratched myself when your father grabbed me.””

Robert's mouth fell open.

“I never grabbed you!””

“Dad!”” Marcus shouted from upstairs.

Robert gripped the edge of the kitchen table.

“Son, I'm begging you. Come downstairs and listen to me for five minutes. Just five minutes!””

But Marcus didn't answer.

Instead, Robert heard the bedroom door close.

Then another sound.

A phone ringing.

Robert stared at the staircase.

He knew that ringtone.

It was Vanessa's.

And something about the way Marcus had suddenly stopped speaking made his stomach tighten.

A minute later, Marcus appeared at the top of the stairs.

His face was pale.

“Dad,” he said.

Robert immediately walked toward him.

“What happened?””

Marcus held up his hand.

“Stay there.””

“Son, please.””

“Did you know Vanessa had been recording something upstairs?””

Robert blinked.

“What?””

Marcus looked toward the bedroom.

“She says she recorded you.””

Robert felt his knees weaken.

“That's impossible.””

“She says she has a video.””

Robert shook his head.

“Then show it to me.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Dad, I don't know what I'm looking at anymore.””

Robert stared at his son.

“Have you forgotten who I am?””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I haven't forgotten anything.””

“Then remember the man who taught you to ride a bicycle. Remember the man who stayed awake beside your hospital bed when you were eight. Remember the man who sold his car to pay for your mother's treatment.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Please don't do this.””

“I'm not doing anything, Marcus. I'm trying to understand why my own family is treating me like a criminal.””

Before Marcus could respond, Vanessa appeared behind him.

She had changed into a loose pink sweater.

Her hair was brushed. Her lipstick had been wiped away. Her expression was exhausted, but her eyes were alert.

“Baby,” she said softly, “I think we should leave.””

Marcus turned.

“Vanessa, I need to see the recording.””

“Not now.””

“You said you recorded him.””

“I did.””

“Then show me.””

Vanessa looked at Robert.

For a split second, the frightened expression disappeared.

“Your father is dangerous,” she whispered.

Robert felt anger rise in his chest.

“Then why won't you show the video?””

Vanessa flinched dramatically.

“See? He's intimidating me again!””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Enough. Both of you.””

He took Vanessa downstairs and told her to sit in the living room.

Then he approached his father.

“Dad, I want to ask you something. And I need you to tell me the truth.””

Robert nodded.

“Anything.””

“Why were you in Vanessa's bedroom?””

Robert stared at him.

“I told you. She came downstairs and asked me to help her with something.””

“What?””

“She said the closet door was stuck. She wanted me to look at the hinges.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why didn't she ask me?””

“You were outside talking to the delivery driver. I didn't think anything of it.””

“And then?””

“She walked ahead of me upstairs. When I entered the room, she closed the door. Then she started shouting.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Did you touch her?””

“No.””

“Not even her arm?””

Robert paused.

“She grabbed my wrist when I tried to leave.””

Marcus looked up.

“Why would she do that?””

“I don't know!””

Robert's voice cracked.

“That's what I've been trying to tell you.””

Marcus remained silent.

Robert reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“There's something else. Look at this.””

He opened his recent calls.

“At 10:42 this morning, I called your mother. She didn't answer. At 10:47, I called the hardware store because I wanted to check the replacement hinges. At 10:51, I called my friend Daniel.””

Marcus glanced at the screen.

“So?””

“Your wife claims I was alone with her for almost an hour. But I wasn't. I have the calls.””

Marcus studied the timestamps.

Robert continued.

“I also received a message from her at 10:38. She asked me to come upstairs because she needed help.””

Marcus looked toward the living room.

“Can I see it?””

Robert handed him the phone.

The message was still there.

*Vanessa — 10:38 AM:*

*Mr. Williams, could you please come upstairs? The closet door is stuck again.

Marcus is busy. I don't want to bother him.*

Marcus read it twice.

Then he looked at his father.

“Why didn't you show me this earlier?””

Robert let out a bitter laugh.

“Because nobody gave me the chance!””

For several seconds, Marcus said nothing.

Then he walked toward the living room.

“Vanessa, I need your phone.””

She immediately pulled it against her chest.

“Why?””

“To see the recording.””

“Marcus, I'm your wife.””

“And he's my father.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“So you're choosing him?””

“I'm choosing to understand what happened.””

She slowly handed over her phone.

Marcus opened the gallery.

There were several photographs of the bedroom, two selfies, and a short video file.

He pressed play.

The screen showed a close-up of a white wall.

Then Vanessa's voice.

“Robert, just say what you said before.””

Robert leaned forward.

Marcus frowned.

A man's voice followed.

But it wasn't Robert's.

It was a recording of a television playing in another room.

Then Vanessa whispered something.

“Louder. I need it to sound real.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

He replayed the last few seconds.

“Louder. I need it to sound real.””

He looked at his wife.

“What is this?””

Vanessa's face changed.

“That's not what you think.””

“Who were you talking to?””

“No one.””

“Then why did you say you needed something to sound real?””

Vanessa stood up.

“Give me my phone.””

Marcus held it away from her.

“Not yet.””

“Marcus!””

“Who were you talking to?””

She looked at Robert.

Then back at her husband.

And suddenly, she began crying.

“You're both making me feel unsafe!””

Robert nearly laughed at the absurdity of it.

But Marcus didn't.

He was staring at the phone.

There was something else in the video.

At the very end, just before it stopped, a shadow moved across the bedroom wall.

A man's shadow.

A man who wasn't Robert.

Marcus enlarged the image.

“Vanessa…”

She stopped crying.

“What?””

“Who's standing behind the camera?””

For the first time that afternoon, Vanessa had no answer.

And then the doorbell rang.

Three hard knocks followed.

Marcus walked to the front door.

When he opened it, a tall man in a dark blue jacket stood outside.

He was holding a leather folder.

“Good afternoon,” the stranger said.

“I'm Detective Harris. We received a call about an alleged assault in this house.””

Behind Marcus, Vanessa immediately began sobbing again.

But Detective Harris wasn't looking at her.

He was looking at Robert.

“Mr. Williams?””

“Yes.””

The detective nodded.

“I'm afraid there's something you should know. We received a second call about this address before your daughter-in-law contacted the police.””

Robert frowned.

“From whom?””

Detective Harris opened his folder.

“That's what makes this situation rather unusual.””

He removed a printed photograph.

It showed Vanessa entering a hotel.

And the man walking beside her was someone Robert recognized.

His own son.

Marcus stared at the picture.

“Dad,” he whispered.

“What is that?””

Robert couldn't answer.

May you like

Because the photograph was dated three weeks earlier.

And Marcus had told everyone he was working out of state that weekend.
