Chapter 4: The Recording That Changed Everything
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The silver flash drive sat on the coffee table between the family photographs and the scattered property documents.
Robert stared at it.
“Evelyn,” he said quietly, “what exactly is on that?””
His wife didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at Marcus.
“Your father deserves to hear the truth. All of it.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Mom, please. Whatever Vanessa told you, you don't understand what happened.””
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“Don't you dare tell me what I understand.””
Vanessa moved toward the front door.
Detective Harris stepped into her path.
“Mrs. Williams, I'd like you to stay.””
“I've done nothing wrong!””
“Then you shouldn't have a problem answering a few questions.””
Vanessa pointed toward Robert.
“He's the one who attacked me! Why is everyone suddenly treating me like a criminal?””
Evelyn slowly turned.
“Because I watched you prepare to destroy an innocent man's life.””
Vanessa froze.
Robert looked at his wife.
“You watched?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I saw her go upstairs this morning. I saw her carrying something in her handbag. I heard her asking Marcus whether the bedroom camera was working.””
Marcus's head snapped up.
“What camera?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“The one she installed in your father's bedroom last week.””
Robert felt a chill move down his spine.
“My bedroom?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That's a lie! I installed a security camera because your father kept walking around the house without telling anyone.””
Robert stared at her.
“My bedroom is private.””
“You're seventy years old. You forget things.””
“I don't forget people entering my room!””
Detective Harris raised a hand.
“Let's take this one issue at a time.””
Evelyn approached the coffee table and inserted the flash drive into Marcus's laptop.
A folder appeared.
There were four video files.
Each had a date.
October 14.
October 15.
October 16.
And October 17.
Robert stared at the first filename.
“That's the date Helen died.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I found these recordings in a storage box your late wife left with me.””
Robert turned toward her.
“Why would Helen leave something with you?””
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
“Because she was afraid.””
Marcus sat down.
“Mom, what are you talking about?””
Evelyn opened the first file.
The screen flickered.
Then a familiar voice filled the living room.
Helen.
Robert's knees nearly buckled.
He hadn't heard his first wife's voice in twenty years.
But there it was.
Soft. Clear. Alive.
“Evelyn, if you're watching this, something has happened to me. I don't know what Marcus has told his father, but I need you to know that I've been receiving threats.””
Robert covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
“I know my son has been spending time with a girl named Vanessa. I've tried talking to him, but he won't listen. She's older than him, and I believe she's using him.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“No…”
Evelyn pressed pause.
Robert looked at her.
“Keep playing it.””
She did.
Helen appeared again.
“Yesterday, I discovered that money had been withdrawn from my insurance account. Marcus says he knows nothing about it. But I found a copy of the authorization in his room.””
Robert turned slowly toward his son.
“Marcus?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I was eighteen. I didn't understand what she was doing.””
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“Watch the next part.””
The recording continued.
Helen leaned closer to the camera.
“If something happens to me, please don't let Robert believe it was his fault. He's been working too hard. He's exhausted. He trusts our son more than anyone.””
Robert closed his eyes.
Then Helen said something that made the entire room go silent.
“Marcus told me he was going to take me somewhere tonight. He says Vanessa wants to talk to me. I don't trust her.””
The video ended.
Robert remained motionless.
For twenty years, he had believed his wife died because she had lost control of her car on a wet road.
He had never imagined she had been frightened before getting behind the wheel.
He looked at Marcus.
“Did you take her that night?””
Marcus's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“She wanted to confront Vanessa. I thought I could make them talk.””
“And what happened?””
Marcus swallowed.
“We argued.””
“About what?””
“Money. Vanessa had borrowed money from her, and Mom wanted it back.””
Robert shook his head.
“Your mother had money?””
“Not much. But she had an insurance policy. Vanessa knew about it.””
Robert looked at Evelyn.
“Why didn't I know any of this?””
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“Because Helen asked me not to tell you until I had proof. She believed someone was monitoring her.””
Robert's voice cracked.
“And after she died?””
“I tried to investigate. But the police told me there wasn't enough evidence to suggest anything other than an accident. Then Marcus begged me not to reopen the case.””
Marcus stood up.
“I was scared!””
Evelyn turned on him.
“You were scared of losing your freedom. Your father was grieving, and you let him blame himself for years.””
Marcus covered his face.
Detective Harris moved closer to the laptop.
“Mrs. Williams, do you have the original files?””
“Yes. These are copies. I have the original storage device.””
“Where?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“At my sister's house.””
“Can you arrange for it to be collected?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
It was a sharp, bitter sound.
“That's your evidence? A video of a dead woman talking about suspicions?””
Evelyn turned.
“There's more.””
She opened the second recording.
This time, the video showed a dark room.
A young Marcus sat at a table.
Beside him was Vanessa.
She looked almost exactly the same, except her hair was shorter.
Marcus was crying.
Vanessa placed a document in front of him.
“Sign it,” she said.
Young Marcus shook his head.
“I can't. My mother will know.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Your mother won't know anything if you do exactly what I tell you.””
“I don't want her insurance money.””
Vanessa slammed her hand on the table.
“Then how are you going to pay me back?””
Robert stared at the screen.
The recording continued.
Young Marcus whispered, “I thought you loved me.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Love doesn't pay bills, sweetheart.””
Then she pushed the document closer.
“Sign it, or I'll tell your mother what happened between us.””
The recording stopped.
Marcus lowered himself into a chair.
Robert stared at him.
“You were involved with her before your mother's death?””
Marcus nodded.
“How long?””
“Almost a year.””
Robert felt sick.
“And you brought her into our lives?””
“I was young.””
“You were eighteen, not eight!””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You're making it sound like I forced him to do everything.””
Evelyn turned toward her.
“You threatened him. You manipulated him. And then you used his fear to get access to this family.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
Evelyn's expression became icy.
“You sacrificed nothing. You took everything you could reach.””
Detective Harris interrupted.
“Mrs. Williams, I need you to stop speaking and sit down.””
Vanessa ignored him.
She pointed at Evelyn.
“You think you're innocent? You knew what happened that night. You knew Marcus was driving.””
Robert looked at his wife.
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
The silence was answer enough.
Robert took a step toward her.
“You knew?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I suspected it.””
“For twenty years?””
“I tried to protect you.””
Robert's voice broke.
“From what? The truth?””
Evelyn began crying.
“I was afraid you would lose your son.””
Robert looked at Marcus.
Then back at Evelyn.
“And what did I lose instead?””
Neither answered.
For a moment, the only sound in the room was the laptop fan.
Then Detective Harris's phone rang.
He stepped into the hallway to answer it.
When he returned, his expression had changed.
“Mr. Williams, there's been a development.””
Robert looked up.
“What now?””
“The vehicle involved in your first wife's accident was recently examined again.””
Marcus went pale.
Detective Harris continued.
“An independent mechanic discovered that the brake line showed signs of deliberate damage.””
Robert felt the floor shift beneath him.
“Are you saying someone sabotaged the car?””
“That's what we're investigating.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her handbag.
“I need to leave.””
Detective Harris moved toward her.
“Mrs. Williams, please remain here.””
She looked at Marcus.
“Tell them!””
Marcus didn't move.
“Tell them what?”” Robert asked.
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
Then she screamed.
“Tell them you were the one who cut the brakes!””
Robert turned toward his son.
May you like
Marcus stood frozen.
And for the first time, he didn't deny it.
