Chapter 8: The Passenger Nobody Knew About
Robert stared at the telephone.
“Marcus, what did you just say?””
“I wasn't the only person in the car.””
“Who else was there?””
Marcus breathed heavily.
“Dad, I need to see you.””
“Answer the question.””
“I can't explain this over the phone.””
Robert turned toward Detective Harris.
The detective immediately stepped closer and motioned for him to put the call on speaker.
Robert did.
“Marcus,” he said, “you're speaking to Detective Harris too. Tell us where you are.””
“I'm at the station.””
“Good. Stay there.””
Marcus hesitated.
“Dad, there's something else. Vanessa told you she had the recording, but she doesn't know I made a copy.””
Robert felt his stomach tighten.
“What recording?””
“The one from the car.””
Detective Harris interrupted.
“Mr. Williams, do you have that recording in your possession?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“In a cloud account. I downloaded it before Vanessa took my phone.””
“Can you preserve it without altering or deleting anything?””
“Yes.””
“Good. We'll arrange to obtain it properly.””
Robert took a shaky breath.
“Marcus, who was in the car?””
A long silence followed.
Then his son answered.
“My mother.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“I know Helen was in the car.””
“No, Dad. I mean someone else was there too. Someone who got into the back seat before we left.””
“Who?””
Marcus began crying.
“Evelyn.””
Robert felt as though someone had punched him.
He looked toward his wife.
Evelyn was staring at him.
She had heard every word.
“That's impossible,” Robert whispered.
Marcus continued.
“Mom didn't know Evelyn was coming. Vanessa told me we were going to meet someone who could help us settle the argument. I thought it would be easier if everyone talked.””
Robert's voice became sharp.
“You took your mother in a car with the woman who had been threatening her?””
“I didn't know everything then.””
“And Evelyn?””
“She said she wanted to help.””
Robert looked at his wife.
“Why were you in the car, Evelyn?””
She began shaking her head.
“Robert, please let me explain.””
But Marcus was still speaking.
“Dad, when we stopped near the old bridge, Vanessa got out. Evelyn stayed in the car with Mom. They started arguing.””
Robert's heart hammered.
“What were they arguing about?””
“The insurance policy.””
Evelyn covered her face.
Marcus continued.
“Mom said she had proof that Evelyn had changed the beneficiary documents. She said she was going to tell you everything.””
Robert stared at his wife.
“Then what happened?””
“I heard shouting. I got out of the car. Vanessa was standing near the passenger door.””
Marcus paused.
“And then I heard the brakes fail.””
Robert gripped the edge of the table.
“You damaged the brakes before you left?””
“Yes.””
“Knowing your mother would be driving?””
“I thought the damage was minor. I was supposed to scare her into stopping the meeting.””
Robert's voice rose.
“You don't accidentally damage someone's brakes!””
“I know!””
Marcus began sobbing.
“I know what I did, Dad!””
Robert closed his eyes.
Detective Harris took the phone.
“Mr. Williams, did anyone attempt to stop the vehicle after the brakes failed?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said something unexpected.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“Evelyn.””
Robert looked at his wife.
Marcus continued.
“She reached for the steering wheel. She was trying to help Mom.””
Evelyn suddenly began crying.
“Robert, I tried!””
Marcus's voice broke.
“But Vanessa pulled her back.””
Robert felt his blood turn cold.
“Vanessa was outside the car?””
“Yes.””
“What did she do?””
“She opened the driver's door after the crash. She reached inside and took something.””
“The envelope?””
“Yes.””
Robert turned toward Detective Harris.
The detective's expression had become extremely serious.
“Mr. Williams, we need to preserve this recording immediately.””
Marcus continued.
“Dad, there's one thing I haven't told you.””
Robert's voice dropped.
“What?””
“Mom wasn't unconscious when Vanessa took the envelope.””
The room went silent.
“What do you mean?””
“She was alive. She was trying to speak.””
Robert felt tears fill his eyes.
“What did she say?””
Marcus struggled to answer.
“She said your name.””
Robert covered his mouth.
“She kept saying, 'Tell Robert.''”
Evelyn collapsed into the sofa.
Robert could barely breathe.
For twenty years, he had imagined Helen dying alone, without anyone beside her.
Now he was learning that she had been alive after the crash.
She had called for him.
And nobody had told him.
“Why didn't you call an ambulance immediately?”” Robert whispered.
Marcus cried harder.
“I did.””
“Then why did she die?””
“Because Vanessa told me the police would find out about the brakes. She told me to leave.””
Robert stared at the phone.
“You left your mother?””
“I was terrified.””
“You left her?””
“I thought someone else would help her!””
Robert closed his eyes.
He couldn't listen anymore.
He handed the phone to Detective Harris.
The detective spoke quietly with Marcus, confirming the location of the digital recording and arranging for officers to collect it.
When the call ended, Robert looked at Evelyn.
“Were you there when Helen died?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Did you hear her call my name?””
“Yes.””
“Did you tell anyone?””
“No.””
Robert felt his throat tighten.
“Why?””
Evelyn began sobbing.
“Because Vanessa threatened me. She said if I told the police about the insurance documents, she would tell them I had drugged Helen. She said I would be charged with causing her death.””
“So you stayed silent.””
“I was afraid.””
“And you let me believe Helen died instantly.””
Evelyn nodded.
Robert looked away.
He wanted to scream.
He wanted to break something.
But he was too tired.
Too hurt.
Too old to understand how the people closest to him had turned his life into a crime scene.
Detective Harris returned.
“We have officers arranging to collect the digital evidence. I'd also like to speak with you both separately.””
Robert nodded.
Then he noticed something on the coffee table.
The small silver flash drive was still there.
He picked it up.
“Detective, can I ask you something?””
“Of course.””
“If Helen's original recording proves that she feared Vanessa, and Marcus admits damaging the brakes, can the case be reopened?””
“Potentially, yes. The authorities will need to review the original evidence, the medical findings, and the circumstances surrounding the crash. But there is enough here to justify further investigation.””
Robert looked at the flash drive.
“Then I want everything investigated.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“That's understandable.””
A few minutes later, an officer returned with an update.
Vanessa had been taken to the station for questioning.
Marcus had agreed to provide a formal statement.
Evelyn would also be interviewed.
Before leaving, the detective approached Robert.
“There's one more matter. The financial documents suggest that someone attempted to use your property to secure a loan. We'll contact the relevant financial institutions and request that the transaction be frozen while the matter is investigated.””
Robert nodded.
“Thank you.””
After the detective left, Robert walked into the kitchen.
He sat at the table where he had spent the afternoon trembling after being falsely accused.
The cup of tea was still there.
Cold.
Untouched.
Evelyn appeared in the doorway.
“Can I sit with you?””
Robert didn't look up.
“No.””
She stood there for a moment.
Then she approached anyway.
“Robert, I know you may never forgive me.””
He stared at the table.
“You're right.””
“I loved you.””
“Then why did you help destroy the woman I loved first?””
Evelyn began crying.
“I was jealous.””
“Of Helen?””
“Yes.””
Robert looked up.
“She was dead. You had me. What more did you want?””
Evelyn had no answer.
He continued.
“You had a husband who trusted you. A home. A family. And still, you couldn't stop looking over your shoulder at a woman who had been buried for years.””
Evelyn lowered her head.
“I know.””
Robert stood.
“I'm going to stay somewhere else tonight.””
“Where?””
“That isn't your concern.””
“Robert, please. Don't leave me.””
He looked at her.
“You didn't think about me when you decided to hide the truth for twenty years. Don't ask me to think about you now.””
He walked toward the staircase.
Halfway up, he stopped.
“Evelyn?””
She looked up.
“Yes?””
“Did Helen ever write another letter?””
Evelyn's expression changed.
For a moment, she appeared genuinely frightened.
Then she whispered, “Yes.””
Robert turned completely around.
“Where is it?””
Evelyn looked toward the living room.
“In David's estate file.””
“Why didn't you mention it?””
“Because…”
She swallowed.
“Because the letter was addressed to you.””
Robert felt his heart pounding.
“What did it say?””
Evelyn's voice became almost inaudible.
“She wrote that if anything happened to her, you should never marry me.””
Robert stood motionless.
Then he slowly descended the stairs.
“Why?””
Evelyn looked into his eyes.
“Because Helen believed I had been planning to take her place long before she died.””
Robert stared at her.
May you like
And suddenly, the most painful question was no longer what had happened to Helen.
It was whether his entire second marriage had begun with a betrayal.
