Chapter 7: The Confession Hidden in a Dead Man's Estate

Robert read the message again.

Then a third time.

Someone who had been living in his house for twenty years.

His eyes slowly moved toward Evelyn.

She stood beside the sofa, clutching her handbag against her stomach. Her face was pale, and her lips trembled as though she were trying to form words that refused to come.

“Evelyn,” Robert whispered.

“Tell me that message is wrong.””

She looked down.

“Robert, please.””

“Tell me.””

“I can't.””

Robert felt his knees weaken.

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Mr. Williams, don't jump to conclusions. We need to verify the sender and establish what this attorney actually has.””

Robert nodded, although his mind was already racing.

He called the number.

A man answered almost immediately.

“Mr. Williams? This is Daniel Foster. I was your brother's attorney.””

“David's attorney?””

“Yes. I'm sorry to contact you this way. I've been trying to reach you for several days.””

“What confession are you talking about?””

There was a pause.

“Your brother left a sealed statement with my office before he died. He instructed me to release it if anyone attempted to transfer your property or if Vanessa Williams contacted the estate.””

Robert looked at Vanessa.

She had stopped pretending to cry.

Her face had become completely still.

“Why would David leave something like that?”” Robert asked.

“Because he believed the events surrounding Helen's death were connected to a much larger fraud. He was afraid the same people would eventually target you.””

Robert swallowed.

“Who did he name?””

“I can't discuss the contents over the telephone. But I can tell you this: your brother admitted that he helped conceal evidence after the accident.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Did he name the person who planned it?””

“Yes.””

“Tell me.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your brother named Evelyn.””

The phone slipped slightly in Robert's hand.

Across the room, Evelyn began shaking her head.

“No. No, that's not what happened.””

Robert looked at her.

“You heard him.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“Mr. Williams, I strongly recommend that you come to my office with the detective. There are original documents, photographs, and a recorded statement.””

Detective Harris took out a notepad.

“Mr. Foster, this is Detective Harris. Please preserve everything in your possession. We will arrange to collect the materials through the proper channels.””

“Of course,” Daniel replied.

“There's one more thing.””

“What?”” Robert asked.

“Your brother also left instructions concerning a life insurance policy.””

Robert frowned.

“What policy?””

“The one connected to Helen's death. The original beneficiary designation was changed shortly before the accident.””

Robert felt his stomach tighten.

“Changed to whom?””

“Evelyn.””

Evelyn suddenly sank into the sofa.

Robert ended the call.

For several seconds, the room remained silent.

Then he spoke.

“Twenty years.””

Evelyn looked up.

“Robert…”

“Twenty years I sat beside you at breakfast. Twenty years I celebrated birthdays with you. Twenty years I believed you were the person who helped me survive losing Helen.””

His voice cracked.

“And all this time, you knew?””

Evelyn began crying.

“I didn't plan for any of this to happen.””

“That's not an answer.””

“I loved you!””

Robert shook his head.

“You don't get to use love as an excuse for everything you've done.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

“She's not the only one who lied, Robert.””

Detective Harris turned toward her.

“Mrs. Williams, I suggest you remain quiet.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Evelyn was the one who wanted Helen gone. She was the one who changed the insurance papers. She was the one who arranged the meeting that night.””

Robert turned toward his wife.

“Is that true?””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“I changed the beneficiary form.””

Robert stared.

“You changed Helen's insurance beneficiary?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn wiped her cheeks.

“Because I thought Helen was going to leave you. I thought she was going to take Marcus and move away. I was afraid I'd lose you.””

Robert looked at her in disbelief.

“So you wanted money from her death?””

“No! I never wanted her to die!””

“Then why change the beneficiary?””

Evelyn's voice became desperate.

“Vanessa told me it was only temporary. She said if Helen left, there would be no reason for the policy to remain in her name. She promised she would change everything back.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don't blame me for your decisions.””

Evelyn turned toward her.

“You told me Helen was going to sign the papers!””

“She was supposed to!””

“You said nobody would get hurt!””

Vanessa laughed.

“You believed whatever you wanted to believe.””

Robert watched the two women argue.

Suddenly, something occurred to him.

“Why did David help you?””

Evelyn stopped speaking.

Robert continued.

“My brother hated dishonesty. He would never have helped someone hide evidence unless there was a reason.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“He was paid.””

Robert stared.

“By whom?””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

Then she whispered, “Me.””

Robert took a step backward.

“You paid my brother?””

“I gave him money after the accident.””

“How much?””

“Twenty thousand dollars.””

Robert felt sick.

“And what did he do?””

“He removed Helen's leather case from the car before the police arrived.””

Robert remembered the photograph.

The small leather case beside the passenger seat.

“What was inside?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa suddenly interrupted.

“I know.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed a small key.

“I've been keeping something for twenty years.””

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“Put the key on the table.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she placed it beside the flash drive.

“It opens a storage box.””

“Where?””

“An old private storage facility outside town.””

Robert stared at her.

“What is inside?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“The original insurance documents. Helen's letter. And the recording David made before he died.””

Detective Harris picked up the key.

“Why didn't you tell anyone about this earlier?””

“Because I wanted something in return.””

Robert's eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“Your house.””

For a moment, Robert couldn't speak.

Vanessa continued.

“I knew Marcus was desperate. I knew Evelyn was terrified of the truth coming out. I knew you would eventually become suspicious. I wanted the property transferred before anyone started asking questions.””

“And the false assault accusation?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“It was supposed to make you leave willingly.””

Robert stared at her.

“You thought I'd surrender my home because you screamed loudly enough?””

“I thought your son would believe his wife.””

Marcus's words from earlier returned to Robert.

I didn't think she'd take it this far.

Robert looked at the detective.

“Are you going to let her walk out of here?””

Detective Harris remained composed.

“I'm going to ensure that the evidence is secured and that all allegations are properly investigated. Nobody is leaving without giving us the necessary information.””

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the key.

Detective Harris caught her arm.

“Don't move.””

“That's mine!””

“Not anymore.””

She struggled for several seconds before another officer entered and helped escort her into the hallway.

Evelyn remained on the sofa.

Robert looked at her.

“Did you know Vanessa was planning to accuse me?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“Did you help her?””

“No, Robert. I swear.””

He studied her face.

For twenty years, he had trusted that expression.

Now he didn't know what it meant.

Detective Harris approached.

“Mr. Williams, I think we should arrange to visit the storage facility tomorrow morning. We may find evidence that clarifies what happened to your first wife.””

Robert nodded.

Then his phone rang again.

It was Marcus.

He answered.

“Dad?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“What do you want?””

Marcus's voice was shaking.

“Please don't go to that storage facility.””

Robert frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa doesn't have the original recording.””

Robert glanced toward Detective Harris.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Because I have it.””

Robert gripped the phone.

“You have what?””

“The recording of the night Mom died.””

May you like

Then Marcus whispered something that made Robert's blood turn cold.

“And Dad, I wasn't the only person in the car.””
