Chapter 5: The Confession Nobody Expected

“Marcus?””

Robert's voice was barely audible.

His son stood in the middle of the living room, his face drained of color.

“Dad, please.””

“Did you cut the brakes?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. I didn't mean to.””

Robert grabbed the back of a chair.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Oh, now he's pretending he doesn't remember?””

Detective Harris stepped between them.

“Everyone needs to remain calm.””

But Robert couldn't hear anything except his son's next words.

“I only loosened something. I didn't know the car would become dangerous.””

Evelyn let out a cry.

Robert stared at Marcus.

“You touched your mother's car?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“It was supposed to scare her.””

“Scare her?””

“She kept threatening to tell you about Vanessa. She said she was going to expose everything.””

Robert felt his throat tighten.

“So you damaged your mother's car because she was going to tell me the truth?””

Marcus began crying.

“I was eighteen. I was stupid.””

Robert shook his head.

“Your mother trusted you.””

“I know.””

“She loved you more than anything.””

“I know!””

“And you put her in a car with damaged brakes?””

Marcus fell to his knees.

“I didn't know she would drive that night!””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don't put this on me!””

Marcus looked up.

“You told me it would only make her late!””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“Because you said you knew what you were doing!””

Detective Harris immediately raised his hand.

“Stop. Both of you.””

He turned toward Marcus.

“Are you admitting that you deliberately interfered with the brakes on the vehicle?””

Marcus stared at the floor.

After a long pause, he nodded.

“Yes.””

Robert closed his eyes.

A sound escaped his chest.

Not quite a sob.

Not quite a gasp.

It was the sound of a man realizing that the person he had spent his life protecting had helped destroy the person he loved most.

Evelyn reached for his arm.

“Robert…”

He pulled away.

“Don't.””

She stopped.

Marcus crawled a little closer.

“Dad, I know you hate me.””

Robert opened his eyes.

“I don't hate you.””

Marcus looked up hopefully.

Robert continued.

“I wish I could.””

The words hit harder than a slap.

Detective Harris asked Marcus to stand.

“Sir, I need you to come with me so we can formally document your statement.””

Marcus rose unsteadily.

Vanessa immediately protested.

“Why him? He was following my instructions!””

Detective Harris turned toward her.

“Then you can explain your involvement separately.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“You can't arrest me based on something he says.””

“I'm not discussing arrests right now. I'm asking you to cooperate.””

She folded her arms.

“I want a lawyer.””

“That's your right.””

Robert watched as Marcus was escorted toward the front door.

Just before leaving, his son turned around.

“Dad?””

Robert looked at him.

“Will you ever forgive me?””

Robert stared at the boy who had once fallen asleep against his chest during thunderstorms.

Then he looked at the grown man who had allowed his mother to die without telling the truth.

“I don't know who I'm supposed to forgive.””

Marcus lowered his head.

The door closed behind him.

For several minutes, nobody moved.

Vanessa remained seated on the sofa, her arms crossed.

Evelyn stood beside the coffee table, staring at the flash drive.

Robert walked to the window.

Outside, the afternoon sun illuminated the garden Helen had planted years ago.

He remembered her kneeling beside the roses, laughing when he complained about the thorns.

He remembered her saying that one day, when they were old, they would sit together on the porch and watch their grandchildren play.

That future had disappeared twenty years earlier.

And now he was discovering how much of his remaining life had been built on lies.

“Evelyn,” he said.

His wife looked up.

“Yes?””

“Why did you stay with me?””

She began crying.

“Because I loved you.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you hide the truth?””

Evelyn wiped her cheeks.

“Because I was afraid you would blame yourself even more. Marcus was your only child. You had already lost Helen. I thought telling you would destroy you.””

Robert turned around.

“You didn't protect me. You decided what I was allowed to know.””

“I was trying to keep this family together.””

“There was no family to keep together if everyone was lying.””

Evelyn sat down.

“I know.””

Robert walked to the kitchen.

He poured himself a glass of water.

His hands were still trembling.

When he returned, Vanessa was standing beside the sofa.

“I want my phone.””

Detective Harris had taken it for examination.

“You'll have to speak to him,” Robert replied.

Vanessa laughed.

“Do you think you're some kind of hero now?””

Robert looked at her.

“No.””

“You think you can throw me out of this family?””

“This is my house.””

“And Marcus is your son. You can't pretend you don't owe him anything.””

Robert put down his glass.

“I owe him the truth. I owe his mother justice. And I owe myself the right to live without being threatened.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You have no idea what you're dealing with.””

Robert stared at her.

“Then explain it.””

She looked toward Evelyn.

“You should ask your wife what she did after Helen died.””

Evelyn stood.

“Don't.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Go ahead. Tell him.””

Robert turned.

“What is she talking about?””

Evelyn's face became pale.

“Vanessa is trying to confuse you.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Evelyn lowered herself onto the sofa.

“After Helen's funeral, I received a package.””

“What was in it?””

“Photographs. Bank statements. And a letter.””

“From whom?””

“Vanessa.””

Robert stared.

Evelyn continued.

“She told me Marcus had been involved in Helen's death. She said she had evidence that could send him to prison.””

Robert's stomach tightened.

“And you believed her?””

“I knew something was wrong. I knew Marcus had been driving. But Vanessa threatened to release everything unless I paid her.””

Robert stepped closer.

“How much?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Forty thousand dollars.””

Robert felt his heart sink.

“You paid her?””

“Yes.””

“With what money?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“From our joint savings.””

Robert stared at his wife.

The money he had saved for their retirement.

The money he had worked overtime to protect.

“You gave her forty thousand dollars?””

“I thought it would end.””

Vanessa laughed.

“It did end. For a while.””

Robert turned toward her.

“You've been blackmailing my wife for twenty years?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“She was willing to pay.””

Evelyn stood up.

“You told me you would leave us alone!””

“I did. Until Marcus came to me again.””

Robert frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Your son came to me six months ago. His business was collapsing. He needed money. I told him I could help.””

Robert slowly turned toward the empty doorway.

“Help him how?””

“By using this house.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Marcus told me he was arranging a business loan.””

Vanessa smiled.

“He was. But the bank wouldn't approve it without collateral.””

Robert's stomach tightened.

“So you decided to steal my property.””

“Borrow it,” Vanessa corrected.

“Without my permission?””

“You were never going to give it to us.””

“Because it's my home!””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Your son needed help.””

Robert stared at her.

“And the assault accusation?””

She said nothing.

He continued.

“You planned to make me look dangerous so Marcus could have me removed from the house.””

Vanessa looked away.

“It's more complicated than that.””

“No. It isn't.””

He stepped toward her.

“You wanted me out of my home. You wanted my wife frightened into silence. And you wanted my son to sign documents using my name.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“You should have retired years ago.””

Robert felt something cold settle inside him.

“I built this home. I paid for it. And I will decide when I leave.””

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

“Fine. But you haven't heard the worst part.””

She pulled a small envelope from the side pocket.

Then she placed it on the coffee table.

Robert looked at it.

“What is that?””

“Something Marcus asked me to keep.””

Evelyn approached the envelope.

Her hands began shaking.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa smiled.

“From the hospital records.””

Robert opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of a medical report dated the morning after Helen's accident.

He read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His eyes stopped at a line near the bottom.

*Patient's blood sample indicates the presence of a sedative prior to the incident.*

Robert looked up.

“Helen was drugged?””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Vanessa nodded.

“Now you're finally asking the right question.””

Robert stared at the document.

“Who gave her the sedative?””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“That's what I've been trying to tell you.””

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Your wife didn't just die because Marcus damaged the brakes.””

Robert felt his blood turn cold.

Vanessa continued.

“Someone made sure Helen was too weak to fight back before she got into that car.””

Evelyn suddenly whispered.

“No…”

Robert turned.

“What?””

His wife began shaking.

“I know who gave her the medication.””

Robert stared at her.

“Who?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

May you like

Then she said a name Robert never expected to hear.

“Me.””
