Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Left Behind
“If Alessandro is standing beside you…”
My father’s voice paused.
The entire room held its breath.
Then the recording continued.
“…then you have already made the same mistake I did.””
The words cut through me.
I looked at Alessandro.
He didn’t move.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t even look angry.
He just stared at the screen as if he had been waiting twelve years for a ghost to accuse him.
My hands tightened around the letter.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“No, that doesn’t make sense.””
My father’s face remained frozen on the screen.
A man I barely remembered.
A man I had spent years missing.
A man whose last message to me was telling me not to trust the person standing closest to me.
Alessandro.
“Clara,” Elena whispered.
I looked at her.
“Did you know?””
Her eyes filled with pain.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
But I couldn’t tell what I believed anymore.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had a story.
The only person who didn’t have anything was me.
The child who was left behind.
The woman who had spent eight months hiding her baby because she was too afraid to ask for help.
The recording continued.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“Clara, I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“Not everything written in this room is the truth.””
Everyone went still.
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
My father continued.
“Some things were created to protect you.””
My heartbeat slowed.
“Some things were created to mislead the people hunting you.””
I looked at Alessandro again.
Confusion replaced fear.
Because what was my father trying to say?
Was he warning me about Alessandro?
Or warning me about believing too quickly?
The recording continued.
“When you find this archive, you will see names. You will see documents. You will see evidence.””
My father looked exhausted.
Older than I remembered.
“Do not judge people based only on what you find here.””
The room became silent.
Marcus frowned.
“That’s not what I expected.””
Alessandro looked at him.
“You knew about this recording?””
“No.””
“Then why are you surprised?””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Because Lorenzo and I spent years trying to uncover the truth.””
The recording continued.
“The person who betrayed us was not the person we suspected.””
A pause.
“It was someone who understood trust better than anyone.””
My stomach tightened.
Adrian.
The thought came instantly.
But then my father said:
“Someone who knew how to make people believe they were being protected.””
The room went quiet.
That sentence felt different.
Because suddenly, it didn’t only describe Adrian.
It described everyone.
My mother.
Victor.
Marcus.
Even Alessandro.
Everyone had claimed protection.
Everyone had taken choices away from me.
My father continued.
“But the person responsible was not working alone.””
A file appeared on the computer screen.
A folder opened.
Hundreds of documents filled the display.
Then one name appeared.
*PROJECT ORION*
Daniel stepped closer.
“What is that?””
Nobody answered.
My father’s voice continued.
“Project Orion was created to control information between powerful families, corporations, and government officials.””
Alessandro’s face changed.
“Government officials?””
My father continued.
“Lorenzo and I discovered that people were using our companies to hide illegal transactions.””
Marcus looked at Alessandro.
“I told you.””
Alessandro ignored him.
His attention stayed on the screen.
“We tried to expose them.””
The recording flickered.
“And that was our mistake.””
My father looked away.
“Because we didn’t understand the most dangerous person wasn’t outside our circle.””
A pause.
“He was inside it.””
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
A group of people standing together.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Businessmen.
And there, in the corner…
A face I recognized.
Adrian.
But not alone.
Standing beside him was another person.
Someone I knew.
Someone I had never suspected.
My breath stopped.
“No.””
Elena saw the picture.
Her face went pale.
“Impossible.””
Alessandro looked at her.
“You know him?””
She didn’t answer.
“Who is he?””
Elena’s lips parted.
Then she whispered:
“Lorenzo’s closest friend.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Victor Hale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the reaction told me everything.
Alessandro looked stunned.
“My father trusted him.””
“Yes,” Marcus said.
“And?””
Marcus looked at the screen.
“And he was the one who built Project Orion.””
Silence.
The recording continued.
“My daughter…”
My father’s voice pulled me back.
“If you are watching this, then you are old enough to know the truth.””
My eyes burned.
“I wanted to tell you everything.””
A pause.
“But telling you would have put a target on your back.””
I whispered:
“You should have trusted me.””
Nobody heard.
Or maybe they did.
My father continued.
“Clara, the reason I left the necklace with you wasn’t because you were the safest place to hide it.””
My hand touched the pendant.
“It was because you were the one person nobody would think to search.””
I felt sick.
“I am sorry.””
My father’s voice cracked.
“I am sorry you grew up believing I abandoned you.””
A tear fell down my face.
“Because I never stopped fighting to come home.””
The recording paused.
Then continued.
“One day, you will meet Alessandro Duca.””
Everyone looked at him.
Including me.
My father’s next words came slowly.
“When that happens, remember this.””
The room became completely silent.
“His father was not his son.””
I froze.
Alessandro looked up.
The recording continued.
“Lorenzo made mistakes. He hid things. He hurt people by keeping secrets.””
My father’s voice softened.
“But he loved his son.””
A long pause.
“And Alessandro spent his entire life trying not to become the man he feared.””
My breath caught.
The recording was not a warning.
Not exactly.
It was something else.
A confession.
A truth my father wanted me to understand.
My father looked into the camera.
“If Alessandro is with you when you find this…”
A small sadness appeared in his eyes.
“Then perhaps he succeeded.””
The video ended.
The room remained silent.
Nobody moved.
Then Alessandro walked away from the computer.
I watched him.
For the first time, he looked less like a billionaire.
Less like the untouchable man everyone feared.
He looked like someone who had just learned his entire life had been built on secrets too.
“Your father believed in me.””
His voice was quiet.
I didn’t know what to say.
Because minutes ago, I thought my father had warned me about him.
Now I realized he had done something more complicated.
He had warned me not to judge too quickly.
Something I had spent my whole life doing.
Trusting.
Then regretting.
Alessandro looked at me.
“Do you believe him?””
I looked down at Mia.
Then back at him.
“I don’t know.””
The honesty surprised both of us.
But it was the truth.
“I don’t know who to believe anymore.””
Alessandro nodded slowly.
“That’s fair.””
The answer almost hurt.
Because I expected him to convince me.
To defend himself.
Instead, he accepted my doubt.
Daniel checked the documents on the computer.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
He pointed at the screen.
A new file had appeared.
Created moments ago.
The title was simple.
*THE FINAL WITNESS*
Marcus stepped closer.
“That wasn’t there before.””
Elena looked frightened.
“Open it.””
Alessandro did.
The file contained one image.
A recent photograph.
Taken from outside the penthouse.
My blood ran cold.
Because the picture showed us.
Me.
Mia.
Alessandro.
Taken only minutes ago.
Someone had been watching.
Someone close enough to see everything.
Then a message appeared below the photograph.
*You found the archive.*
A second message loaded.
*Now find the person who gave us the key.*
My heart stopped.
“The key?””
Daniel looked at the necklace.
“No.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Wait.””
A third message appeared.
And this one made Elena cover her mouth.
Because it wasn’t a threat.
It was a name.
*The person who gave us the key was Clara’s mother.*
Everyone looked at Elena.
She whispered:
“No…”
The screen flashed one final time.
*Ask Elena why she really disappeared.*
I turned slowly toward my mother.
May you like
And for the first time since she walked back into my life…
She looked afraid of me.
