Chapter 6: The Secret Inside the Necklace
“If you open it…”
Elena’s voice trembled.
“They will know Clara is still alive.””
Nobody spoke.
The words settled over the penthouse like smoke.
I looked down at Mia.
My daughter had no idea that the tiny silver necklace around my neck might be the reason strangers had been searching for us.
To her, it was just something shiny that caught her attention when I held her.
To me, it had always been a reminder.
A reminder of the father I lost.
The father I spent years trying to understand.
The father who left behind more questions than memories.
I touched the pendant carefully.
“How?””
My voice was barely audible.
“How could they know?””
Elena looked at me with a sadness that made my chest hurt.
“Because that necklace was never just a necklace.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Clara—”
“No.””
I stepped away.
“I wore this every day since I was a child.””
“I know.””
“You’re telling me my father hid something inside it?””
“Yes.””
“And nobody noticed?””
Elena looked at Alessandro.
“People noticed.””
The room went still.
“What?””
She looked back at me.
“Your father knew people would come looking. He made sure they believed the necklace was worthless.””
I stared at the small silver pendant.
“It’s not even expensive.””
“Exactly.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Then why give it to her?””
Elena answered quietly.
“Because the safest place to hide something valuable is somewhere nobody thinks is valuable.””
Alessandro reached toward the necklace.
Not touching.
Just looking.
“What’s inside?””
Elena’s face hardened.
“I don’t know.””
That surprised everyone.
“You don’t know?”” Alessandro asked.
“No.””
“How can you not know?””
“Because Clara’s father didn’t trust anyone.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Not even me.””
The words hurt.
Even after everything.
Even after knowing the truth about him.
Some small part of me still wanted to believe my parents had loved me.
That everything they did was for a reason.
That I wasn’t just something caught between their secrets.
Alessandro noticed my expression.
“Clara.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t have to do this tonight.””
I almost laughed.
“Tonight?””
I gestured around the room.
“My dead mother just walked into your penthouse, my missing father’s secret necklace might contain evidence that could get me killed, and someone is apparently hunting my eight-month-old daughter.””
My voice cracked.
“And you’re telling me I don’t have to do this tonight?””
His expression softened.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because you’re exhausted.””
“I’m fine.””
“No, you’re not.””
I wanted to argue.
But then Mia made a small sleepy sound against my shoulder.
And I realized my hands were shaking.
I was exhausted.
Terrified.
And angry.
All at once.
Alessandro looked at Elena.
“You said opening it would expose her.””
“Yes.””
“Then we don’t open it.””
I looked at him.
“That’s your solution?””
“For now.””
“But if there’s something inside that can explain everything—”
“Then we find another way.””
I stared at him.
“You actually believe there’s another way?””
His eyes met mine.
“I believe keeping you alive matters more than getting answers tonight.””
The simplicity of it stunned me.
Nobody had ever said that before.
Not like that.
Not without asking what I could give them in return.
Daniel crossed his arms.
“There’s a problem.””
Everyone looked at him.
“If Victor knows about Mia, and Elena knows about the necklace, then someone else probably knows too.””
Alessandro’s expression darkened.
“That’s what I was thinking.””
I looked between them.
“Who?””
Nobody answered immediately.
That scared me.
“Who?””
Elena took a breath.
“The Morettis.””
My stomach tightened.
“Victor’s family?””
“Yes.””
Daniel nodded.
“They have been searching for the necklace for years.””
“Why?””
“Because of what it contains.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel looked at Alessandro.
“Tell her.””
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
“Tell me what?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your father and her father were working together.””
I froze.
“What?””
Elena looked down.
“They weren’t enemies at first.””
Alessandro’s face changed.
“My father worked with hers?””
“Yes.””
“But why?””
Elena’s voice became quiet.
“Because they discovered something.””
“What?””
“A system.””
Nobody moved.
“What system?””
She looked at the city outside.
“The kind of system powerful people build when they believe they are untouchable.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“You mean corruption?””
Elena didn’t answer directly.
But she didn’t need to.
Alessandro stepped forward.
“My father was involved in illegal activity?””
“He was involved in something much bigger than that.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because once they discovered the truth, they realized they had helped create something dangerous.””
Daniel nodded.
“And they tried to expose it.””
“Together?””
“Yes.””
Alessandro laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“My father died.””
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.””
“And Clara’s father disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Convenient.””
The word was cold.
I looked at Alessandro.
For the first time, I saw his anger.
Not the controlled anger he showed employees.
Real anger.
Pain.
“He spent my entire life making me believe he was a hero.””
Elena’s eyes softened.
“He was a complicated man.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“It’s the truth.””
The room fell silent.
Then a sound interrupted us.
A notification.
Alessandro’s security system.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I immediately felt afraid.
“What happened?””
He turned the screen toward us.
A message had appeared.
No sender.
Just four words.
*I KNOW SHE IS HERE.*
My blood went cold.
Mia stirred in my arms.
Alessandro immediately stepped closer.
“Everyone move away from the windows.””
Daniel looked outside.
“There’s no way they could know.””
“They do.””
Alessandro’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
That was when I realized something.
He was afraid.
Not for himself.
For us.
“Alessandro.””
He looked at me.
“What do we do?””
The question came naturally.
And I hated how much I trusted him now.
He didn’t hesitate.
“We leave.””
“Leave?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere secure.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
His eyebrows lowered.
“Clara.””
“I spent my entire life running.””
My voice grew stronger.
“I ran from my father. I ran from Victor. I ran from everyone who told me they were protecting me.””
I looked at Mia.
“I’m not running again.””
Alessandro stared at me.
Then something changed.
Respect.
“You’re right.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“We don’t run.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“Alessandro.””
“No.””
He looked at the security system.
“Whoever sent that message wants us scared.””
He turned back.
“We don’t give them that.””
Elena looked worried.
“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.””
Alessandro’s expression became cold.
“Neither do they.””
For a moment, I saw why people feared him.
Not because he was cruel.
Because when he decided something, nothing moved him.
Then he looked at Mia.
His expression softened.
“However, we do protect her.””
I nodded.
“What does that mean?””
“It means we need to know what your father hid.””
My fingers touched the necklace.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m not opening it here.””
Alessandro nodded.
“Agreed.””
“Then where?””
He looked toward the private office.
“My father had a safe room.””
Daniel frowned.
“You still have it?””
“Yes.””
“And you never opened it?””
Alessandro’s face changed slightly.
“No.””
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then he answered:
“Because my father told me never to enter it unless the truth was more dangerous than the secret.””
Nobody spoke.
Elena whispered:
“Lorenzo always did like dramatic warnings.””
Alessandro looked at her.
“You knew him.””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me something.””
His voice became sharp.
“Why would my father trust Clara’s father with a secret?””
Elena looked at me.
Then at the necklace.
And the fear returned to her face.
“Because your father knew something about Clara that even she doesn’t know.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Elena stepped closer.
“Clara…”
The way she said my name made me afraid.
“There is a reason your father chose you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He knew what would happen.””
“No.””
“He knew one day they would come.””
“Stop.””
“He knew Mia would exist.””
My breath caught.
“That’s impossible.””
Elena looked at the baby in my arms.
And whispered:
“He knew because the necklace was never meant for you.””
Silence.
Then she looked directly at Mia.
“It was meant for her.””
My arms tightened around my daughter.
“What are you saying?””
Before Elena could answer, the lights in the penthouse went out.
Everything disappeared.
The city outside vanished.
The room fell into darkness.
Mia started crying.
And somewhere in the silence…
A door opened.
Not the elevator.
Not the entrance.
A door inside the penthouse.
A door that was supposed to be locked.
Alessandro’s voice cut through the darkness.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
A shadow moved.
Then a familiar voice whispered from the hallway.
“Alessandro…”
My blood froze.
Because it wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t an enemy.
It was someone standing in the darkness who knew his name.
May you like
And then the voice said:
“I know what’s inside the necklace.””
