Chapter 3: The Man Who Knew My Secret

“Clara…”

The sound of my name from his mouth felt like a warning.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

Because standing in Alessandro Duca’s penthouse doorway was the last person I expected to see.

Daniel.

The man who had promised me he would never tell anyone.

The man who had helped me survive the first terrifying weeks after Mia was born.

The man who knew exactly why I was afraid.

Alessandro looked between us.

His eyes narrowed.

“You know her?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

The single word changed everything.

I watched Alessandro’s expression become unreadable.

That was the face people feared.

The face that appeared before decisions were made.

“Explain.””

Daniel stepped farther into the penthouse.

“I can explain.””

“I didn’t ask if you could.””

The coldness in Alessandro’s voice made the room feel smaller.

“I asked you to explain.””

Daniel looked at me.

For a second, I saw hesitation.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel was never hesitant.

Not when it came to me.

Not when it came to Mia.

“What are you doing here?”” I asked.

My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.

Daniel looked away.

“I needed to talk to you.””

“You couldn’t call?””

“I tried.””

I frowned.

“I didn’t get any calls.””

His silence answered before his words did.

“I didn’t call your phone.””

A chill went through me.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Alessandro.

“Because I knew you weren’t alone anymore.””

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Mia stirred in Alessandro’s arms, completely unaware of the tension surrounding her.

The sight made my chest ache.

My daughter trusted the man everyone else feared.

And somehow, that terrified me.

Alessandro noticed my expression.

Then he looked back at Daniel.

“Who are you?””

Daniel straightened.

“Daniel Moretti.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to Alessandro.

I saw it.

A tiny change.

A recognition.

“Moretti.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The silence after that name felt heavy.

I looked between them.

“You know each other?””

Alessandro didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“His father knew mine.””

The words made my stomach tighten.

Because I had never heard Daniel mention a family connected to someone like Alessandro Duca.

Not once.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Protect me.

Everyone used that word.

Protect.

Help.

Save.

But somehow those words always came with secrets.

“I’m tired of people deciding what I need without asking me.””

My voice shook.

Daniel’s expression softened.

“Clara…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“No more.””

Alessandro watched me carefully.

I could feel it.

He was putting pieces together.

And I hated that he was better at reading people than I was at hiding.

“Daniel,” Alessandro said.

The man looked at him.

“Why did you come here?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then his eyes moved to Mia.

“Because someone is looking for her.””

Everything stopped.

Even Alessandro’s expression changed.

“What?””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“Clara.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You said nobody knew.””

“Nobody was supposed to.””

“Then how?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Because I already knew.

Someone had found out.

Someone had been searching.

Someone knew about my daughter.

Alessandro stepped forward.

“Who is looking for her?””

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s complicated.””

“I don’t like complicated.””

“I know.””

“Then make it simple.””

Daniel exhaled.

“There are people who believe Mia belongs to them.””

The room went silent.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

Alessandro looked at me.

“What does he mean?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I knew exactly what Daniel meant.

And I had spent eight months pretending that part of my life was dead.

Buried.

Gone.

But apparently, secrets didn’t disappear.

They waited.

“Clara.””

Alessandro’s voice pulled me back.

“Tell me.””

I looked at Mia.

Then at the man holding her.

The strange thing was, a few hours ago, I had been terrified Alessandro would discover my secret.

Now I was terrified he wouldn’t know enough.

“I had someone before Mia,” I whispered.

Daniel looked down.

Alessandro remained silent.

“A man named Victor.””

The name felt poisonous.

“He was Mia’s father.””

Alessandro’s eyes hardened.

“Where is he?””

“Gone.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one I have.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Victor didn’t just leave.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“He disappeared after the accident.””

My heart stopped.

Alessandro looked at me.

“Accident?””

I closed my eyes.

I hated this.

I hated reopening everything.

But there was no hiding anymore.

“Before Mia was born, Victor and I had an argument.””

My voice became quiet.

“He wanted me to leave the city with him.””

“And you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

I looked at my daughter.

“Because I found out things about him.””

Alessandro waited.

I continued.

“Things that made me afraid.””

“What things?””

I swallowed.

“Money.””

“That’s vague.””

I almost smiled.

Even now.

Even with my entire life falling apart.

He still demanded answers.

“Victor was involved with people who weren’t safe.””

Daniel looked at Alessandro.

“His family.””

The room became colder.

Alessandro’s face changed.

“Say it.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Victor was a Moretti.””

My eyes moved between them.

I didn’t understand.

But Alessandro did.

And the look on his face told me this was bigger than I realized.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” Alessandro asked Daniel.

“Because she didn’t know.””

“That’s not your decision.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became firmer.

“But keeping her alive was.””

The words shocked me.

Alive.

Not safe.

Not comfortable.

Alive.

I looked at Daniel.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Clara, Victor wasn’t just running away.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“What?””

“He was hiding.””

“From who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Alessandro did.

“From my father.””

The room went completely still.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Alessandro’s eyes remained on Daniel.

“You’re telling me Victor Moretti was hiding from Lorenzo Duca?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt dizzy.

I had never heard the name Lorenzo Duca before.

But I knew from Alessandro’s reaction that it mattered.

“Who is Lorenzo?””

Alessandro didn’t answer.

And that frightened me.

Because Alessandro Duca always had an answer.

Daniel looked at me.

“His father.””

A cold feeling spread through my body.

“And why would Victor hide from him?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Alessandro carefully placed Mia into my arms.

The movement was gentle.

Almost too gentle.

Like he suddenly remembered she wasn’t just a secret.

She was a person.

His expression changed.

The businessman disappeared.

Something darker replaced it.

Something personal.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“When did you find out?””

“Three days ago.””

“And you waited until now?””

“I had to make sure.””

“Make sure of what?””

Daniel looked at Mia.

“That she was really his daughter.””

My arms tightened around her.

“My daughter?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

“No, you don’t get to apologize yet.””

Both men looked at me.

“I spent eight months terrified.””

My voice trembled.

“I hid my daughter in a laundry room because I thought losing my job was the worst thing that could happen.””

I looked at Alessandro.

“I thought you finding out was the worst thing.””

Then Daniel.

“I thought you were the only person who knew.””

My eyes burned.

“But apparently everyone has been protecting me from a truth I deserved to know.””

Nobody interrupted.

Good.

Because I wasn’t finished.

“I am Mia’s mother.””

I held her closer.

“I decide what happens to her.””

Alessandro looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something that wasn’t authority.

It was respect.

“I agree.””

The answer surprised me.

Daniel looked at him.

“You do?””

Alessandro ignored him.

“From this moment, no one enters this penthouse without my permission.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“I’m not a prisoner.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“You’re a person someone has been trying to hide from.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t mean you get to control my life.””

“I know.””

The immediate agreement caught me off guard.

“I’m not trying to control you.””

“Then what are you doing?””

He looked at Mia.

“Protecting her.””

A strange silence followed.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

“Who is it?”” Daniel asked.

Alessandro didn’t answer.

He pressed the phone against his ear.

“Hello?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where did you get this number?””

Another pause.

His eyes moved slowly toward me.

Then Mia.

And I knew.

Before he even spoke.

Something had happened.

Something terrible.

“Put her on the phone.””

My heart stopped.

Alessandro’s hand tightened around the device.

“Clara.””

I froze.

The way he said my name told me everything.

“What?””

His face turned pale.

“There’s someone who wants to speak to you.””

I couldn’t move.

“Who?””

Alessandro looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

May you like

And whispered the name I had spent eight months trying to forget.

“Victor.””
