Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The name on the security screen stared back at me.
*Elena Vale.*
My mother.
For twelve years, I had lived with the knowledge that she was gone.
Not missing.
Not somewhere far away.
Gone.
That was what everyone told me.
That was what the police report said.
That was what I had forced myself to believe because the alternative was too painful.
But now her name was glowing on Alessandro Duca’s security panel.
Inside his penthouse.
At midnight.
My arms tightened around Mia.
“No.””
The word escaped before I even realized I had spoken.
Alessandro looked at me.
“Clara.””
“That’s impossible.””
His eyes stayed on mine.
“Why?””
Because dead people didn’t knock on doors.
Because dead people didn’t appear on security cameras.
Because dead people didn’t have names that still made your heart break twelve years later.
“She’s dead.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at me.
Then at the screen.
“Clara…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She’s dead.””
My voice became louder.
“The police found her car. They found her belongings. They said—”
I stopped.
Because I remembered.
I remembered the officer sitting across from me in our small apartment.
I remembered my father standing silently behind him.
I remembered the way he didn’t cry.
Not once.
Back then, I thought he was strong.
Now I wondered if he already knew something I didn’t.
Alessandro turned toward the security panel.
“Open the camera feed.””
The screen changed.
A hallway appeared.
The private elevator doors.
The same elevator only family members and authorized guests could access.
And standing in front of it was a woman.
Older.
Thinner.
Her dark hair touched her shoulders.
One hand rested against the wall.
But I knew her.
I knew the shape of her face.
The way she stood.
The tiny scar near her eyebrow.
The scar I remembered touching when I was a child.
My knees nearly gave out.
“Mom…”
The word came out as a whisper.
Daniel looked at me.
“You’re sure?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because every part of me knew.
That was my mother.
The woman who used to sing while making breakfast.
The woman who tucked blankets around me when thunderstorms scared me.
The woman who promised she would always come home.
The woman who never did.
Alessandro watched my face.
Then he pressed the intercom.
“Who are you?””
The woman on the screen looked directly at the camera.
Like she knew exactly where it was.
Then she smiled.
A small, sad smile.
“Alessandro.””
His expression changed.
She knew his name.
“My daughter is there.””
My breath caught.
Alessandro looked at me.
The woman continued.
“Please let me see her.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Alessandro asked:
“How do you know Clara?””
The woman’s eyes lowered.
“Because I gave birth to her.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
I stepped closer to the screen.
My hands shook.
“Mom?””
The woman froze.
Even through the camera, I saw it.
Pain.
Love.
Regret.
“Clara.””
Hearing my name in her voice broke something inside me.
I covered my mouth.
Twelve years.
Twelve years of anger.
Twelve years of questions.
Twelve years wondering why I wasn’t enough for someone to stay.
And now she was there.
Alive.
Alessandro looked at me.
“Do you want me to let her in?””
I should have said no.
I should have demanded answers first.
I should have protected myself.
But I was still the little girl who waited by the window every evening hoping her mother would come home.
“Yes.””
The elevator doors opened.
The woman stepped inside.
The seconds felt endless.
Then the penthouse doors unlocked.
Elena Vale walked in.
And the world I knew disappeared.
She looked at me.
I looked at her.
Neither of us moved.
Then her eyes went to Mia.
And she covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
The emotion in her voice was real.
That was the worst part.
If she had been cold, it would have been easier.
If she had looked like a stranger, I could have hated her.
But she looked like my mother.
The same woman from old photographs.
The same woman who used to hold me.
“Clara…”
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Her face fell.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know I hurt you.””
“You disappeared.””
“I had no choice.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
Alessandro remained silent.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
But neither interrupted.
Good.
Because this was something I needed to hear.
Something I needed to say.
“You were my mother.””
Elena closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t know.””
My voice cracked.
“You missed birthdays.””
Her face tightened.
“You missed my graduation.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“You missed everything.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
The question that had lived inside me for twelve years finally came out.
“Why did you leave me?””
The room went completely quiet.
Elena looked at Alessandro.
Then Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Because staying would have killed you.””
I froze.
“What?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””
My stomach tightened.
Again.
That sentence.
Everyone knew something about my father.
Everyone except me.
“My father was cruel,” I whispered.
Elena’s expression broke.
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
“You knew?””
“I knew everything.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You let me grow up with him.””
“No.””
Her voice was full of pain.
“I tried to take you.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“When I discovered what he was involved in, I tried to leave.””
“With me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked down.
“Because he found out.””
The room became colder.
“What does that mean?””
Elena looked at Alessandro.
And something in that glance terrified me.
“Your father was connected to Lorenzo Duca.””
Alessandro went still.
“You knew?””
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.””
His jaw tightened.
“How?””
“Because I was there.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“There for what?””
Elena looked between all of us.
“For the night Lorenzo Duca died.””
The words hit the room like an explosion.
Alessandro’s expression changed completely.
“My father died in an accident.””
Elena looked at him sadly.
“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””
Nobody breathed.
I looked at Alessandro.
The controlled billionaire.
The man who always knew what to do.
For the first time, he looked lost.
“What are you saying?””
Elena walked closer.
“I’m saying your father was murdered.””
Silence.
Then Alessandro’s voice became dangerously calm.
“Who?””
Elena hesitated.
And that hesitation told me the answer would change everything.
“Your father’s enemies.””
“That’s not a name.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“It’s a warning.””
My heart started racing.
“Why are you looking at me?””
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father’s enemies weren’t only after Lorenzo.””
I held Mia closer.
“Then who were they after?””
Elena looked at my daughter.
And whispered:
“You.””
A chill went through me.
“Me?””
“No.””
Her eyes moved to Mia.
“Your bloodline.””
The room went silent.
I felt Alessandro move closer.
Protective.
But Elena shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
Alessandro’s voice hardened.
“Then explain.””
She looked at him.
“Clara’s father kept something hidden.””
“What?””
“A record.””
Daniel frowned.
“What kind of record?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Elena’s expression turned serious.
“Proof that both your families were built on a lie.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Alessandro asked:
“Where is it?””
Elena looked at me.
And my stomach dropped.
Because I knew before she answered.
“It was hidden with Clara.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“Your father left it for you.””
“I don’t have anything from him.””
“Yes, you do.””
My mind raced through every possession I owned.
Every box.
Every memory.
Nothing.
Then Elena said the words that made my entire body freeze.
“The necklace you wear every day.””
My hand immediately went to my throat.
The necklace.
The only thing I had left from my childhood.
The only thing I never removed.
Alessandro looked at it.
Then at me.
“Take it off.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
“Clara.””
“No.””
My fingers closed around the small silver pendant.
My father’s last gift.
The thing I had hated and loved for years.
Elena whispered:
“Your father didn’t give you that necklace because he loved you.””
My heart sank.
“He gave it to you because he knew one day someone would come looking for what was inside.””
A horrible silence filled the penthouse.
Then Mia suddenly started crying.
The sound snapped everyone back.
I looked down.
My daughter’s face was wet with tears.
And instinctively, I pulled her closer.
Alessandro watched me.
Then he looked at Elena.
His voice was cold.
“What happens if we open it?””
Elena’s expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
And that was when I understood.
Whatever was inside that necklace…
Whatever my father had hidden…
It was powerful enough to make my mother fake her own death.
Powerful enough to connect two of Manhattan’s most powerful families.
And powerful enough that someone had already found us.
Elena whispered:
“If you open it…”
She looked at the penthouse door.
At the cameras.
May you like
At Mia.
“Then they will know Clara is still alive.””
