Chapter 7: The Man Hidden Behind the Walls
“I know what’s inside the necklace.””
The voice echoed through the darkness.
For one terrifying second, nobody moved.
Mia’s crying filled the room.
My heart pounded so loudly I could barely hear anything else.
Alessandro stepped in front of me immediately.
Not dramatically.
Not like someone trying to prove he was fearless.
Like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Protect her.
Protect Mia.
Protect me.
“Turn on the emergency lights,” he commanded.
A second passed.
Nothing happened.
Daniel moved toward the hallway.
“Someone disabled the system.””
Alessandro’s voice remained calm.
“How did they get inside?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the answer was impossible.
This penthouse was supposed to be the safest place in Manhattan.
The elevator required authorization.
The doors required biometric access.
The security system monitored every corner.
Yet someone was standing inside.
Waiting.
Knowing things they shouldn’t know.
The emergency lights flickered.
A dim red glow filled the room.
And then I saw him.
Standing near the entrance to Alessandro’s private office.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
A thin scar running across his cheek.
I didn’t recognize him.
But Alessandro did.
His entire body went still.
“Marcus.””
The man smiled sadly.
“So you remember me.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Alessandro, who is he?””
Alessandro didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on the man.
“Marcus Bell.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Elena’s reaction did.
She took a step back.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Hello, Elena.””
Her face lost all color.
“You’re dead.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“That seems to be a popular rumor tonight.””
My fingers tightened around Mia.
Another person who was supposed to be dead.
Another impossible secret.
I looked at Alessandro.
“Who is he?””
Before he could answer, Marcus spoke.
“I was your father’s security chief.””
Alessandro’s expression hardened.
“You were more than that.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“What are you doing here?””
Marcus looked at the necklace around my neck.
“I came for the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Alessandro noticed where his eyes were focused.
And immediately stepped closer.
“You’re not touching her.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I didn’t come to hurt her.””
“Everyone who says that usually does.””
For a moment, Marcus looked almost amused.
“Your father would have said the same thing.””
The mention of Lorenzo changed the atmosphere.
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t talk about him.””
“Why?””
“Because you weren’t there when he died.””
Marcus went quiet.
Then:
“Yes.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“Yes, I was.””
Silence.
Alessandro’s face changed.
“What?””
Marcus looked down.
“I was there that night.””
Elena closed her eyes.
I felt a chill.
The night Lorenzo Duca died.
The night everyone had lied about.
The night that somehow connected my family to Alessandro’s.
“You said it was an accident,” Alessandro whispered.
Marcus looked at him.
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because your father made me promise.””
Alessandro stared at him.
“My father knew he was going to die?””
“No.””
Marcus looked toward me.
“But he knew someone would try to make it happen.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
That was becoming the pattern of my life.
Everyone had half-truths.
Everyone held pieces.
And I was always the last person to know.
Alessandro stepped forward.
“Answer her.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You sound like him.””
“Who?””
“Your father.””
The words angered Alessandro.
“I’m not my father.””
“No.””
Marcus nodded.
“You’re not.””
A strange sadness crossed his face.
“That’s exactly why he trusted you.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus looked at me.
“Clara.””
I froze.
“How do you know my name?””
He looked surprised.
“Because I knew you before you knew yourself.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“No.””
Marcus continued.
“I was there when your father brought you home from the hospital.””
My breathing stopped.
“You knew my father?””
“Yes.””
“You knew my mother?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did everyone leave?””
The question came out before I could control it.
Marcus looked at me.
And for the first time, the old man looked broken.
“Because we failed you.””
The honesty hurt.
More than another lie would have.
I looked away.
Mia cried softly against my shoulder.
I rocked her gently.
“She’s tired.””
Alessandro glanced at me.
“Give her to me.””
I hesitated.
Not because I didn’t trust him.
Because I was surprised that I did.
Slowly, I handed Mia over.
Alessandro held her carefully.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Tell us about the necklace.””
Marcus nodded.
“That necklace contains a key.””
Daniel frowned.
“A key?””
“Not a physical key.””
Marcus looked at the pendant.
“A digital access key.””
“To what?””
Marcus’s expression became serious.
“Your father’s archive.””
Alessandro went silent.
“What archive?””
“The one he created before he died.””
Elena whispered:
“The evidence.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
I touched the necklace.
“What evidence?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Evidence of the people who controlled your father.””
I frowned.
“My father wasn’t controlled by anyone.””
Marcus’s expression softened.
“Clara.””
The way he said my name made me feel like a child.
“You never knew your father.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
I knew memories.
Not reality.
“He loved you.””
My eyes burned.
“Then why did he leave?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Because he believed leaving was the only way to protect you.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.””
“I know.””
“No one ever stays.””
Marcus looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I hated how many apologies I had heard.
Sorry didn’t bring back birthdays.
Sorry didn’t erase empty chairs.
Sorry didn’t fix childhood.
But then Marcus said something that made me freeze.
“He didn’t leave willingly.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He was taken.””
The room went silent.
Elena whispered:
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“I thought…”
“You thought he escaped.””
Elena looked devastated.
“What happened?””
Marcus’s face became grim.
“Lorenzo found out someone inside his company was selling information.””
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
“Someone inside my father’s company?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked at him.
“That’s what your father was trying to discover.””
“And?””
“He discovered too much.””
A silence followed.
Then Alessandro asked:
“Who killed him?””
Marcus looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Everyone reacted.
“You don’t know?”” Daniel asked.
“No.””
“You were his security chief.””
“Yes.””
“And you don’t know?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because the person who ordered it was someone none of us suspected.””
The room became colder.
“Who?””
Marcus looked at me.
And my heart sank.
Because I knew.
Whatever he said next would change everything.
“It was someone from Clara’s family.””
My body went numb.
“No.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
She looked terrified.
“Marcus.””
He continued.
“Someone who had access to everything.””
I shook my head.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
“Clara—”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“My father would never.””
Marcus looked at me sadly.
“I didn’t say your father.””
The room went quiet.
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
He looked directly at me.
“I said someone from your family.””
The necklace suddenly felt heavier against my skin.
A secret.
A key.
A truth my father died protecting.
And now someone wanted it.
Alessandro looked at Marcus.
“Who?””
Marcus reached into his coat.
Everyone reacted instantly.
Daniel moved.
Alessandro shifted Mia into one arm.
But Marcus only pulled out an old photograph.
He walked forward slowly.
Then placed it on the table.
I stared.
Three people stood in the picture.
My father.
Lorenzo Duca.
And another person.
Someone I recognized immediately.
My heart stopped.
Because I had seen that face every morning growing up.
I had trusted that face.
I had called that person family.
Marcus whispered:
“The person who betrayed both families…”
He pushed the photograph toward me.
“…is still alive.””
My fingers trembled.
Because the third person in the photograph was not a stranger.
It was not some distant enemy.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who had raised me.
Someone whose secrets had followed me my entire life.
Marcus said the name.
May you like
And the world shattered.
“Your uncle, Adrian Vale.””
