Chapter 8: The Uncle Who Knew Too Much

“Your uncle, Adrian Vale.””

The name echoed in my mind.

Adrian.

My uncle.

The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who brought me chocolate after school.

The man who sat beside me at my mother’s funeral and told me everything would be okay.

The man who held my hand when I was eleven years old and asked why I kept crying.

I looked at the photograph on the table.

Three men.

Three secrets.

Three lives destroyed by one betrayal.

And in the center of it all was a face I had trusted.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Then again.

“No.””

Marcus didn’t look away.

“I know what you’re feeling.””

“You don’t.””

My voice sharpened.

“You don’t know what I’m feeling.””

Because how could he?

How could anyone understand what it felt like to discover that every memory you had built your life around might have been a lie?

Alessandro watched me carefully.

He didn’t speak.

Maybe he understood that this wasn’t his moment.

This was mine.

“My uncle raised me after my mother disappeared.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

“He protected me.””

A painful silence.

“Did he?””

I looked at him.

The question hurt more than an accusation.

Because suddenly, every memory had a shadow.

Every kindness had a question.

Every smile had a hidden meaning.

I remembered Adrian telling me never to ask about my father.

I remembered him changing the subject whenever I mentioned my mother.

I remembered the way his face changed whenever someone said the name Lorenzo Duca.

I had always thought he was protecting me from pain.

Now I wondered if he was protecting himself.

“He was the only family I had.””

Elena stepped closer.

“Clara…”

I turned toward her.

“And you knew?””

Her expression broke.

“No.””

“You knew about my father’s secrets.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Lorenzo Duca.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my uncle was involved?””

She looked down.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

And somehow, I believed her.

That made everything worse.

Because if Elena was telling the truth, then everyone had been searching for answers.

Everyone except me.

Marcus looked at Alessandro.

“The archive needs to be opened.””

Alessandro’s expression remained cold.

“How?””

Marcus looked at my necklace.

“Through her.””

I immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m not some key you can use.””

“Clara—” Marcus began.

“No.””

I held Mia tighter.

“My whole life, people have made decisions because they thought they knew what was best for me.””

My eyes moved between them.

“My father.””

“My mother.””

“Victor.””

“Now you.””

Nobody interrupted.

Good.

Because I needed them to hear this.

“I am not a secret to protect.””

My voice shook.

“I am not evidence.””

I looked at Alessandro.

“And I am not a problem you need to solve.””

Something changed in his expression.

Not anger.

Understanding.

“You’re right.””

The answer surprised me.

Again.

“You’re right,” he repeated.

I stared at him.

“Then why do you still look like you’re planning something?””

A small breath escaped him.

Almost a laugh.

Almost.

“Because I am.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“That’s not reassuring.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But it’s honest.””

For some reason, that mattered.

More than I wanted it to.

Marcus stepped toward the table.

“The archive is not just information.””

“What is it?”” Alessandro asked.

“Insurance.””

“For what?””

Marcus looked around the penthouse.

“For the day someone powerful decided they could erase the truth.””

Alessandro’s face hardened.

“And now?””

“Now that day has arrived.””

The words sent a chill through me.

Daniel looked toward the security system.

“The person who sent the message knows we’re here.””

“Yes.””

“They know about the necklace.””

“Yes.””

“They know about Mia.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“Then why haven’t they come?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

They were waiting.

Watching.

Planning.

Alessandro seemed to realize the same thing.

“Everyone leaves.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Not you.””

His eyes moved to Mia.

“Not her.””

Then to Daniel.

“Not Marcus.””

He looked at Elena.

“Not you.””

A pause.

“You’re staying too.””

Elena looked surprised.

“Why?””

“Because someone tried to erase you once.””

His voice became colder.

“I want to know why.””

Nobody argued.

Because Alessandro Duca had made a decision.

And everyone in the room knew it.

A few minutes later, we stood inside his father’s old private office.

I had passed this room dozens of times while cleaning.

I had never entered.

The door was made of dark wood.

No handle.

No lock.

Just a smooth surface.

Alessandro placed his hand against the panel.

Nothing happened.

Marcus watched.

“Try the necklace.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

Alessandro glanced at me.

“Clara.””

I sighed.

“I hate that everyone keeps being right.””

For the first time, I saw something almost human in his expression.

“You’re allowed to hate it.””

I touched the pendant.

Slowly, I pressed it against the center of the door.

A small light appeared.

Everyone went silent.

The wall clicked.

Then the door opened.

Inside was a room frozen in time.

A desk.

A computer.

Boxes of documents.

Photographs.

And a single chair facing the entrance.

As if someone had been waiting.

Alessandro stepped inside.

I followed.

Not because I trusted the room.

Because I needed answers.

On the desk sat a letter.

My name was written on it.

*CLARA.*

My hands went cold.

“No.””

Alessandro looked at me.

“You don’t have to read it.””

But I did.

Because I had spent my entire life waiting.

I picked up the envelope.

Inside was one page.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father’s.

My hands started shaking.

I read the first line.

My dearest Clara,

I had to stop.

I couldn’t breathe.

Alessandro quietly moved closer.

Not touching.

Just there.

I continued.

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

My vision blurred.

I need you to understand one thing before you learn the truth.

I never abandoned you.

The words broke something inside me.

Because that was the wound I had carried for years.

The belief that I wasn’t worth staying for.

I kept reading.

Your mother tried to save you. I tried to save you. But the people around us were closer than we realized.

My eyes moved faster.

The betrayal came from someone we trusted.

I looked at the photograph.

Adrian.

Do not trust Adrian Vale.

My breath stopped.

Everyone froze.

Even Elena.

He was the one who gave them access.

My hands trembled.

He was the one who helped destroy both families.

I covered my mouth.

No.

No.

No.

The man who brought me gifts.

The man who called me his little girl.

The man who told me my parents left because they were selfish.

The man who comforted me when I cried.

But Adrian did not act alone.

The next line made my heart stop.

There is another person you must never trust.

The page continued.

Someone who will come to you pretending to protect you.

My eyes moved down.

Then I saw the name.

And I froze.

Because it wasn’t Adrian.

It wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t even someone from my past.

It was someone standing beside me right now.

Someone who had saved me.

Someone who had held my daughter.

The final words on the page were:

Clara, if Alessandro Duca finds you before you find this letter, do not let him convince you he is different from his father.

The room went silent.

I slowly lowered the paper.

Alessandro was staring at me.

And for the first time since I met him…

I saw something close to fear in his eyes.

Not because he was afraid of me.

Because he was afraid of what my father had written.

Marcus whispered:

“Your father knew this would happen.””

Daniel looked at Alessandro.

“What does it mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then the computer on Lorenzo Duca’s desk suddenly turned on.

The screen flickered.

A file opened automatically.

A video began playing.

And my father’s face appeared after twelve years of silence.

His voice filled the room.

“Clara…”

I stopped breathing.

“If Alessandro is standing beside you…”

A pause.

May you like

My father looked directly into the camera.

“…then you have already made the same mistake I did.””
