Chapter 9: The Husband's Last Secret
The interrogation room became unbearably quiet.
Claire placed her phone on the table.
"Is Nathan telling the truth?""
Margaret looked at the message.
Then she nodded.
"Yes.""
Claire's throat tightened.
"What did he do?""
Margaret folded her hands.
"He helped me arrange the transfers.""
Claire shook her head.
"All of them?""
"Not all.""
"Which ones?""
Margaret looked at Detective Brooks.
"Do you have the original hospital files?""
Brooks nodded.
"Some of them.""
"Then you already know Nathan signed the authorization documents.""
Claire stared at Margaret.
"Why would he do that?""
Margaret looked at her.
"Because he wanted a family.""
The words struck harder than Claire expected.
Margaret continued.
"When Nathan learned Melissa was pregnant, he panicked. He was young. His business was struggling. He didn't want to become a father.""
Claire felt sick.
"So he agreed to give away his own child?""
"He believed Melissa had agreed to a private adoption.""
"Did she?""
Margaret hesitated.
"No.""
Claire covered her mouth.
"What?""
"Melissa changed her mind. She wanted to raise Daniel.""
"And Nathan?""
Margaret looked down.
"He was furious.""
Claire stepped back.
"You're saying my husband helped take his own son?""
Margaret nodded.
"He signed the documents.""
Detective Brooks wrote something down.
"Then what happened to Melissa?""
Margaret's expression changed.
"She discovered that Daniel hadn't been placed with the family she was promised. She threatened to expose everyone.""
"Everyone meaning you and Nathan?""
"Yes.""
Claire felt tears burn her eyes.
"And then she died.""
Margaret nodded.
"Her car went off the road.""
"Was it an accident?""
Margaret looked at Claire.
"No.""
The room seemed to lose its air.
"Who killed her?""
Margaret didn't answer.
Detective Brooks leaned forward.
"Mrs. Harper, this is your opportunity to tell us everything.""
Margaret looked at Claire.
Then she whispered:
"Nathan was driving the car.""
Claire couldn't breathe.
"No.""
"He was with Melissa that night.""
"Stop.""
"They argued. She told him she was taking Daniel and going to the police. Nathan tried to stop her.""
"Stop!""
Margaret began crying.
"The car went over the embankment. He survived. Melissa didn't.""
Claire stared at the woman.
"And you covered it up?""
"I protected my son.""
Claire stepped toward the table.
"You let me marry a man who might have killed the mother of his child.""
Margaret looked away.
"He didn't mean to.""
"That doesn't bring her back!""
Detective Brooks stood.
"Mrs. Harper, I need you to understand that this statement will be formally investigated.""
Margaret nodded.
Then she looked at Claire.
"There's something else.""
Claire closed her eyes.
She couldn't take another secret.
But Margaret continued.
"Nathan wasn't supposed to wake up.""
Claire opened her eyes.
"What?""
"Dr. Lane was instructed to make sure he never recovered.""
Claire felt cold.
"Who instructed him?""
Margaret lowered her voice.
"I did.""
Claire walked out of the interrogation room without saying another word.
Detective Brooks followed.
"Mrs. Harper, I need you to stay here.""
Claire turned.
"Why?""
"Because we need to protect you.""
"From Margaret?""
"From whoever helped her.""
Claire laughed bitterly.
"How many people are there?""
Brooks didn't answer.
Claire's phone rang.
Nathan.
She stared at the screen.
Then she answered.
"Why did you do it?""
Silence.
Nathan finally spoke.
"Claire, please come back.""
"Did you kill Melissa?""
His breathing changed.
"Who told you that?""
"Your mother.""
Nathan cursed under his breath.
"She's lying.""
"Then tell me what happened.""
"I didn't kill her.""
"Were you in the car?""
A long pause.
"Yes.""
Claire closed her eyes.
"Did you leave her there?""
"I was hurt. I couldn't move.""
"Did you call for help?""
Nathan began crying.
"I tried.""
"Did you?""
He didn't answer.
Claire's voice became almost a whisper.
"Did you leave her to die?""
Nathan finally spoke.
"I was afraid.""
Claire looked at the hospital corridor.
Her husband had survived a staged death.
But she was beginning to wonder whether the man she had married had ever truly existed.
"Where is Daniel?""
"I don't know.""
"Who has him?""
"Melissa's sister.""
"What's her name?""
Nathan hesitated.
"Rachel.""
Claire waited.
"Rachel who?""
"Rachel Cole.""
Detective Brooks immediately wrote the name down.
"Where does she live?""
Nathan gave them an address outside the city.
Then he added something else.
"Claire, listen. My mother didn't tell you the worst part.""
"What could be worse?""
Nathan's voice cracked.
"Melissa was pregnant again.""
Claire stopped breathing.
"She had another baby?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"After Daniel.""
Claire looked at Brooks.
"Where is that child?""
Nathan whispered:
"That's the child Margaret said was stillborn.""
Two hours later, Claire and Detective Brooks arrived at a small house on the outskirts of town.
The address belonged to Rachel Cole.
A single porch light illuminated the front steps.
Brooks knocked.
No answer.
She knocked again.
A curtain moved.
Then a woman opened the door.
She was in her late thirties, with tired eyes and dark hair tied into a loose bun.
"Can I help you?""
"Rachel Cole?""
"Yes.""
Detective Brooks showed her badge.
"We need to speak with you about Melissa and her children.""
Rachel's face changed.
"Is Daniel in trouble?""
"No. We need to establish his safety.""
Rachel looked at Claire.
Then she noticed the wedding ring.
"You're Nathan's wife.""
Claire nodded.
Rachel stepped back.
"Come inside.""
The house smelled of cinnamon and laundry detergent.
A small pair of sneakers sat beside the door.
A child's drawing covered the refrigerator.
Claire noticed the name written across the top.
DANIEL.
"He's here?"" she asked.
Rachel nodded.
"He's asleep.""
Claire's heart tightened.
"Can I see him?""
Rachel studied her.
"Why?""
"Because my husband told me he might be his son.""
Rachel's expression hardened.
"Might be?""
Claire looked down.
Rachel walked toward the living room.
"Melissa raised Daniel for six months before she died. I promised her I would never let Nathan's family take him.""
Claire followed.
"Did Melissa tell you what happened?""
Rachel nodded.
"She told me Nathan had signed the adoption papers. Then he changed his mind and tried to take Daniel back.""
"Why?""
"Because his mother wanted to use the child in another arrangement.""
Claire swallowed.
"What arrangement?""
Rachel looked toward the hallway.
"She wanted Daniel to become the legal heir to Nathan's company if something happened to him.""
Claire frowned.
"What?""
Rachel gave a bitter laugh.
"Margaret believed Nathan would eventually die without a legitimate male heir. She wanted control of the company to pass through Daniel.""
Claire stared.
"So she needed him.""
"She needed his identity.""
A small sound came from the hallway.
A boy appeared in the doorway.
He was about five years old.
Dark hair.
Nathan's eyes.
He wore dinosaur pajamas and held a toy truck.
"Mom?""
Rachel turned.
"Go back to bed, sweetheart.""
The boy looked at Claire.
"Who is she?""
Claire couldn't speak.
Rachel crouched beside him.
"She's a friend.""
Daniel studied Claire.
Then he asked:
"Are you the lady from Daddy's picture?""
Claire froze.
"What picture?""
Daniel pointed toward the living room.
A framed photograph showed Nathan holding a newborn baby.
Claire recognized the hospital blanket.
The same one from the photograph in the maternity records.
Rachel looked at her.
"Melissa kept that picture until the day she died.""
Claire felt tears rise.
"Can I talk to him?""
Rachel hesitated.
Then she nodded.
Claire crouched.
"Hi, Daniel.""
"Hi.""
"I'm Claire.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Are you Daddy's wife?""
Claire swallowed.
"Yes.""
He studied her face.
Then he asked:
"Does Daddy know where I live?""
Claire felt her heart break.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
"Why doesn't he come?""
Claire couldn't answer.
Rachel gently led him back toward his room.
When she returned, her expression was cold.
"Now you understand why I never trusted Nathan.""
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
"Rachel, we need to discuss the second child.""
Rachel went completely still.
"Who told you?""
"Nathan.""
Rachel closed her eyes.
Then she walked to a locked cabinet.
She opened it and removed a small envelope.
Inside was a hospital bracelet.
The name was faded, but still readable.
MELISSA COLE.
Underneath it was another name.
BABY GIRL — UNKNOWN.
Claire stared.
"Was she alive?""
Rachel nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where is she?""
Rachel looked at Claire.
"She's been living with someone who has no idea who she really is.""
"Who?""
Rachel took out a photograph.
A little girl stood beside a woman in a garden.
Claire recognized the woman's face immediately.
She was in her early sixties.
Gray hair.
A familiar smile.
Margaret.
Claire looked closer at the child.
The girl was wearing a small silver heart necklace.
The same kind she had bought for her daughters.
Rachel whispered:
"That little girl is the child your husband and his mother have been hiding for four years.""
Claire's phone rang.
An unknown number.
She answered.
A little girl's voice came through.
"Mommy?""
Claire froze.
"Who is this?""
The child began crying.
"My name is Lily.""
Claire looked at Rachel.
Rachel's face turned white.
Then the little girl whispered:
"Grandma says I have to disappear tonight.""
The call ended.
Detective Brooks immediately traced the call.
The signal came from a location near Margaret's former residence.
Officers were dispatched.
Rachel grabbed Daniel's coat.
"He's coming with me.""
Brooks nodded.
"We'll arrange protection.""
Claire couldn't move.
Three children.
Ellie.
Grace.
Daniel.
And now Lily.
Four years of lies had turned into a maze of stolen identities, secret transfers, and a family willing to destroy anyone who threatened its secrets.
Then Rachel took Claire's hand.
"There's something else Melissa wanted you to know.""
Claire looked at her.
"What?""
Rachel pulled a final document from the envelope.
It was a handwritten letter.
The first line made Claire's blood run cold.
To the woman who married Nathan Harper: If you're reading this, then my daughter has finally found her way home.
Claire unfolded the page.
And beneath the letter was a photograph.
A newborn baby.
With Nathan's signature on the back.
But the name written underneath wasn't Lily.
May you like
It was Claire's own name.
*Claire Harper.*
