Chapter 3: The Little Girl Who Disappeared

Claire had never run so fast in her life.

The moment Nathan's words left his mouth, she pushed past the nurses and grabbed her phone.

She called Margaret.

No answer.

She called again.

Nothing.

Then she called the woman who had been watching Ellie during the funeral arrangements.

Her sister, Rebecca.

Straight to voicemail.

"Pick up," Claire whispered.

She called a third time.

Finally, Margaret answered.

"Claire?""

"Where is Ellie?""

There was a pause.

"She's sleeping.""

"Where?""

"At home.""

"Put her on the phone.""

"Claire, it's three in the morning.""

"I don't care. Put my daughter on the phone.""

Margaret sighed.

"She's exhausted. She cried herself to sleep.""

Claire's voice rose.

"Then wake her up!""

Silence.

"Margaret?""

"What's going on?""

"Is Ellie with you?""

"Of course she is.""

"Then why did Nathan just tell me to find her?""

Another silence.

This one lasted too long.

Finally, Margaret said, "Nathan is confused.""

Claire felt her blood turn cold.

"How do you know what he said?""

"I didn't mean—"

"How do you know?""

Margaret's breathing became uneven.

"Claire, listen to me. You need to calm down.""

"Where is my daughter?""

"She's safe.""

"Give her to me.""

"Not right now.""

Claire froze.

"What did you say?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"You're not thinking clearly. You've been through something terrible, and Nathan isn't well enough to make decisions.""

Claire stared at the phone.

"You're keeping my daughter from me.""

"No.""

"Then tell me where she is.""

Margaret didn't answer.

Claire ended the call.

Detective Brooks had been standing near the door, listening.

"What's wrong?""

"Margaret says Ellie is at home.""

"And you don't believe her?""

"She wouldn't let me speak to her.""

Brooks immediately pulled out her phone.

"What's your daughter's full name?""

"Ellie Harper. Eleanor Harper.""

"How old?""

"Four.""

"Last known location?""

"Margaret's house. She was supposed to stay there during the funeral.""

Brooks began typing.

"We'll check.""

Claire grabbed her coat.

"I'm going there.""

"You're not going alone.""

"That's my daughter.""

"I know. But we need to be careful.""

Claire turned toward Nathan.

He had closed his eyes again.

The doctor was checking his vital signs.

"Can I leave him?""

Dr. Reynolds nodded.

"His condition is stable at the moment. We'll monitor him closely.""

Claire bent down and kissed Nathan's forehead.

"I'm bringing her home.""

His fingers moved slightly.

She took it as a promise.

Margaret Harper lived in a large colonial house on the edge of town.

Claire had visited hundreds of times.

She knew the white wooden fence, the rose bushes beside the porch, and the small brass bell hanging near the front door.

But when she arrived at 3:42 a.m., the house looked unfamiliar.

Every light was off.

Detective Brooks parked behind her.

Two uniformed officers followed.

Claire ran up the front steps and hammered on the door.

"Margaret!""

No answer.

She knocked again.

"Open the door!""

A light appeared upstairs.

Then Margaret's voice came from inside.

"Claire?""

"Where is Ellie?""

The door opened a few inches.

Margaret stood behind it wearing a silk robe.

Her hair was messy, and her eyes were red.

"What are you doing here?""

Claire pushed the door wider.

"Where is my daughter?""

Margaret stepped aside reluctantly.

"She's sleeping.""

"Show me.""

"Claire—"

"Now.""

Margaret led her upstairs.

Claire hurried down the hallway toward Ellie's bedroom.

The pink door was closed.

A small drawing was taped to it.

It showed three stick figures holding hands beneath a yellow sun.

Daddy.

Mommy.

Ellie.

Claire opened the door.

The bed was empty.

The pink blanket was folded neatly.

Her daughter's favorite stuffed rabbit sat against the pillow.

Claire stopped breathing.

"Where is she?""

Margaret appeared behind her.

"I told you she's sleeping.""

"She's not here!""

"She was here earlier.""

"Where did she go?""

Margaret crossed her arms.

"Rebecca picked her up.""

Claire turned.

"Rebecca?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

Claire stared at her.

"Why would Rebecca take my daughter at four in the morning?""

"She said Ellie was frightened.""

"Then why didn't she call me?""

Margaret looked away.

"She thought you needed rest.""

Claire stepped closer.

"Give me Rebecca's number.""

"Claire, please—"

"Give me the number!""

Margaret reluctantly handed over her phone.

Claire searched through the contacts.

Rebecca Harper.

She pressed call.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then someone answered.

"Hello?""

"Rebecca, where is Ellie?""

There was a brief pause.

Then Rebecca said, "Claire?""

"Yes. Where is my daughter?""

"I thought she was with Mom.""

Claire felt the floor disappear beneath her feet.

"What?""

"Mom told me Ellie was staying with her.""

Claire slowly looked at Margaret.

Margaret's face had gone pale.

"Rebecca," Claire whispered, "when was the last time you saw Ellie?""

"At the funeral home.""

"And after that?""

"Mom took her. She said she'd bring her home.""

Claire closed her eyes.

"Rebecca, someone is lying.""

Before Rebecca could answer, the call disconnected.

Detective Brooks stepped into the room.

"Mrs. Harper, I need you to come downstairs.""

Claire didn't move.

"Have you found her?""

Brooks glanced at Margaret.

"Not yet.""

Claire turned toward her mother-in-law.

"Tell me where my daughter is.""

Margaret began crying.

"I was trying to protect her.""

"From what?""

Margaret covered her face.

"From the people who wanted your husband dead.""

The room went silent.

Detective Brooks moved closer.

"What people?""

Margaret looked at Claire.

"Three days ago, Nathan called me.""

Claire's chest tightened.

"What did he say?""

"He told me something had gone wrong. He said someone was watching the house, and that if anything happened to him, I had to keep Ellie away from you.""

Claire stared at her.

"Why me?""

"Because he said you were the one they would come for next.""

Claire shook her head.

"That makes no sense.""

Margaret stepped closer.

"He said you didn't know the truth.""

"What truth?""

Margaret's tears fell faster.

"About the money. About Victoria. About the company.""

Claire looked at Detective Brooks.

The detective's expression had hardened.

"Mrs. Harper, I need you to explain exactly what you're talking about.""

Margaret sat on the edge of the bed.

"Six months ago, Nathan discovered that someone inside his company had been moving money through accounts he didn't recognize. He confronted Victoria Shaw.""

Claire remembered the initials on the key.

V.S.

"Who is Victoria?""

"She was Nathan's business partner.""

Claire frowned.

"Business partner?""

"She helped him establish Harper Development. She handled the financial side while Nathan managed construction.""

"Why didn't I know about her?""

Margaret looked down.

"Because Nathan told everyone she had left the company.""

"Everyone except you?""

Margaret didn't answer.

Claire felt anger rising.

"What else did you hide from me?""

"Nothing.""

"Don't lie to me!""

Margaret flinched.

Claire stepped closer.

"My husband was declared dead. My daughter has disappeared. A woman I've never heard of is sending messages about my family. And you're standing here telling me you were protecting us?""

Margaret wiped her cheeks.

"I didn't have a choice.""

"Everyone has a choice.""

Margaret looked toward the empty bed.

Then she whispered, "Nathan said that if Victoria ever came back, we had to assume she had found the little girl.""

Claire's heart stopped.

"What little girl?""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Victoria's daughter.""

Claire stared.

"Victoria has a daughter?""

"Yes.""

"Why would that have anything to do with Ellie?""

Margaret's lips trembled.

"Because Nathan told me that Ellie and Victoria's daughter were connected.""

"How?""

Margaret looked at Claire.

"Because they were born on the same night.""

Detective Brooks immediately called for additional officers.

Margaret was taken downstairs for questioning.

Claire sat on the edge of Ellie's empty bed, holding the stuffed rabbit against her chest.

She remembered the night Ellie was born.

The rain.

The emergency C-section.

Nathan pacing outside the delivery room.

The nurse placing a tiny baby in her arms.

And Nathan crying when he first saw his daughter.

He had looked at Claire and said, "She's perfect.""

Claire had never questioned it.

Why would she?

She was the woman who had carried Ellie for nine months.

She remembered every kick, every doctor's appointment, every ultrasound.

There was no possibility that Ellie wasn't her daughter.

But something about Margaret's words wouldn't leave her alone.

Born on the same night.

Connected.

She looked at the rabbit.

A tiny pink ribbon was tied around its neck.

Ellie had worn an identical ribbon in the funeral home.

Claire pulled it gently.

Something small slipped out from beneath the fabric.

A folded piece of paper.

Her hands began shaking.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Two newborn babies lay side by side in hospital blankets.

One wore a pink identification band.

The other wore a blue one.

On the back, someone had written:

October 12. Two babies. One mother. One secret.

Claire stared at the photograph.

The date was Ellie's birthday.

She turned it over again.

A hospital name appeared beneath the handwriting.

St. Mary's Maternity Ward.

The same hospital where Nathan was now fighting for his life.

"Detective!""

Brooks hurried upstairs.

Claire held out the photograph.

"Look at this.""

The detective examined it.

"Where did you find it?""

"In Ellie's stuffed rabbit.""

Brooks turned the picture over.

Her face changed.

"Do you recognize the handwriting?""

"No.""

Brooks looked at the photograph again.

"Mrs. Harper, I need to ask you something.""

"What?""

"Did you give birth to twins?""

Claire shook her head.

"No. I had one baby.""

"Are you certain?""

"Of course I'm certain!""

Brooks nodded slowly.

"Then why does the hospital's archived maternity record show two newborns registered under your admission number?""

Claire felt the photograph slipping from her fingers.

Two newborns.

One mother.

One secret.

She looked toward the hallway.

"Where is Ellie?""

Detective Brooks didn't answer.

Instead, her phone rang.

She checked the screen.

Then she answered.

"Brooks.""

A man's voice spoke urgently on the other end.

Claire watched the detective's expression change.

"What do you mean she's been found?""

A pause.

"Where?""

Another pause.

Brooks looked at Claire.

Then she whispered, "The old maternity wing.""

Claire stood.

"What?""

The detective ended the call.

"Mrs. Harper, your daughter has been located.""

Relief flooded Claire's body.

"Is she okay?""

"She's alive.""

"Then take me to her!""

Brooks hesitated.

"There's something you need to know.""

Claire grabbed her arm.

"What?""

The detective looked down at the photograph.

"Your daughter wasn't alone.""

"Who was with her?""

Brooks took a breath.

"Victoria Shaw.""

Claire felt her blood turn to ice.

"And according to the officers at the scene, Victoria has been calling Ellie by another name.""

Claire's lips parted.

"What name?""

Detective Brooks looked directly into her eyes.

"Emily.""

And then Claire's phone rang.

It was Nathan.

For the first time since waking up, her husband was calling her.

She answered immediately.

"Nathan?""

His voice came through weak and broken.

"Claire...""

"I'm here. What's happening?""

He struggled to breathe.

"Listen to me. Don't let them take Ellie.""

"I'm going to get her. She's been found.""

"No.""

His voice suddenly sharpened.

"Claire, you don't understand.""

"Then explain!""

Nathan went silent.

When he spoke again, his words shattered everything Claire thought she knew.

"Ellie isn't the child Victoria is looking for.""

Claire gripped the phone.

"Then who is?""

Nathan began crying.

"Because the little girl you raised as our daughter...""

May you like

A long, broken breath.

"Isn't the baby we brought home from that hospital.""
