Chapter 5: The Daughter They Buried in Silence
The man in the hospital uniform was tackled before he reached the exit.
Two officers forced him against the wall.
His identification badge fell to the floor.
Detective Brooks hurried toward him.
"Name!""
The man said nothing.
"Who sent you?""
Still nothing.
Claire barely noticed.
She was holding Ellie against her chest, checking her arms, her face, and her tiny hands.
"Are you hurt, sweetheart?""
Ellie shook her head.
"That man grabbed me.""
"I know. Mommy's here.""
"I wanted you.""
Claire pressed her lips against her daughter's forehead.
"I know, baby. I'm never leaving you again.""
Ellie buried her face in Claire's neck.
Then she whispered something.
"Mommy?""
"Yes?""
"That lady said you weren't my real mommy.""
Claire closed her eyes.
"She was wrong about something very important.""
"What?""
"She doesn't get to decide who your mommy is.""
Ellie looked at her.
"You're my mommy?""
Claire kissed her cheek.
"Always.""
Behind them, Victoria was being handcuffed.
She didn't resist.
Instead, she watched Ellie with a strange expression.
Not hatred.
Not jealousy.
Something closer to heartbreak.
"Claire," Victoria called.
Claire turned.
"Don't speak to me.""
"You need to hear what happened to your daughter.""
"You told me she was dead.""
"She was supposed to be.""
Claire went cold.
Detective Brooks immediately approached.
"What do you mean, supposed to be?""
Victoria looked at the officers.
Then at Claire.
"Your biological daughter was transferred to another facility the night she was born. The hospital told everyone she had died.""
Claire's breathing stopped.
"Where is she?""
"I don't know.""
"You're lying!""
Victoria shook her head.
"I spent years trying to find her.""
Claire stared at her.
"Why would you switch the babies if you wanted your own daughter?""
Victoria began crying.
"Because I thought mine was dying. Because I was terrified. Because I was stupid enough to believe that if I took yours, I could save mine.""
Claire tightened her arms around Ellie.
"You stole my child.""
"I know.""
"You let me raise someone else's baby without knowing.""
"I know.""
"You watched me love her.""
Victoria looked at Ellie.
"Yes.""
Claire stepped closer.
"Then why are you trying to take her now?""
Victoria's voice broke.
"Because six months ago, I discovered that Emily's medical records didn't match the child I had been told was mine.""
Claire frowned.
"What?""
"She had a different blood type. The genetic tests were wrong. I realized someone had switched the records again.""
Detective Brooks intervened.
"Who?""
Victoria looked toward the man being restrained.
"Him.""
The man finally lifted his head.
Claire recognized his face.
She had seen him at the hospital.
He had been standing behind Dr. Reynolds during the emergency examination.
His name badge read DR. PETER LANE.
"He's a doctor?"" Claire whispered.
Detective Brooks looked at the badge.
"Apparently.""
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"He's the one who helped me switch the babies. And he's the one who told me my daughter had died.""
Dr. Lane finally spoke.
"Don't listen to her.""
Victoria turned.
"You promised me she'd be safe!""
"You're confused.""
"You took my money!""
"Enough," Brooks snapped.
An officer pulled Lane away.
Claire looked at Victoria.
"Why did Nathan know all this?""
Victoria lowered her eyes.
"Because Nathan found the original records.""
"Why did he keep it from me?""
"Because he was trying to protect you.""
Claire shook her head.
"Everyone keeps saying that. Everyone keeps making decisions about my life without telling me the truth.""
Victoria looked at her.
"Then you should ask Nathan about the second file.""
"What second file?""
Victoria hesitated.
"The file he found six months ago.""
"What was in it?""
Victoria's voice dropped.
"Your biological daughter wasn't the only baby transferred that night.""
At 5:30 a.m., Claire sat in a police interview room with Ellie sleeping against her shoulder.
A blanket covered the little girl's legs.
Detective Brooks stood beside the table, reviewing the evidence recovered from Victoria and Dr. Lane.
"Lane is refusing to speak," she said.
Claire looked up.
"What about Victoria?""
"She's cooperating, but we need to verify everything she tells us.""
"Can I ask her something?""
"Not without me present.""
"Then I want you there.""
Brooks studied her.
"All right.""
They entered the adjoining interview room.
Victoria sat with her hands cuffed to the table.
Her expensive coat had been removed, revealing a pale blouse.
She looked exhausted.
Claire sat opposite her.
"Tell me about the second file.""
Victoria swallowed.
"Nathan found it in the company's archived records. He had been tracing payments made to Dr. Lane.""
"What did it say?""
"Three babies were registered under the same delivery incident.""
Claire frowned.
"Three?""
"Yes.""
"Who was the third baby?""
Victoria looked down.
"I don't know.""
Claire slammed her palm against the table.
"Stop giving me half-answers!""
Victoria flinched.
"One of the babies was listed as deceased. Another was transferred to a private medical facility. The third was recorded as having been discharged with its mother.""
Claire felt dizzy.
"That was Ellie.""
"Yes.""
"And the other two?""
Victoria hesitated.
"I believe one was your biological daughter.""
"And the third?""
Victoria looked directly at Claire.
"Someone else was involved in the deliveries that night.""
Detective Brooks leaned forward.
"Who?""
Victoria's eyes filled.
"Margaret Harper.""
Claire stopped breathing.
"No.""
"She was there.""
"My mother-in-law?""
"She arrived shortly after the deliveries.""
"Why?""
Victoria looked toward the observation window.
"Because Nathan wasn't the first person in his family to have a reason to hide a child.""
Claire stood.
"You're lying.""
Victoria didn't move.
"Ask Margaret.""
Claire grabbed her phone.
She called her mother-in-law.
No answer.
She tried again.
This time, someone picked up.
"Claire?""
Margaret's voice sounded strained.
"Where are you?""
"At home.""
"You're lying.""
A long pause.
Then Margaret whispered, "What did Victoria tell you?""
Claire's hands began shaking.
"She said you were at the hospital the night Ellie was born.""
Margaret started crying.
"Claire, please.""
"Why were you there?""
"I can explain.""
"Did you know about the switch?""
"Yes.""
The word landed like a gunshot.
Claire covered her mouth.
"How long?""
"From the beginning.""
"Four years?""
"Claire—"
"You watched me raise that little girl. You watched me celebrate her birthdays. You sat beside me when she was sick. And you knew?""
Margaret's sobs became louder.
"I thought it was best.""
"For whom?""
Margaret didn't answer.
Claire's voice dropped.
"Where is my biological daughter?""
"I don't know.""
"Victoria says you do.""
"Victoria doesn't know everything.""
"Then tell me what you know!""
Margaret whispered, "The third baby wasn't yours.""
Claire frowned.
"What?""
"That child belonged to someone in our family.""
"Who?""
Margaret's breathing became ragged.
Then she said something Claire couldn't understand.
"Your husband knows.""
The call ended.
Claire stared at the phone.
Detective Brooks took it gently.
"Mrs. Harper, we need to go back to the hospital.""
Nathan was awake when Claire returned.
His face was pale, but his eyes followed her as she entered.
"Claire.""
She stopped beside his bed.
"Don't.""
Nathan swallowed.
"Please.""
"You knew.""
He closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
"You knew Ellie wasn't biologically ours.""
"Yes.""
"You knew my baby might still be alive.""
Nathan's eyes filled.
"Yes.""
Claire stepped back.
"How could you do this to me?""
Nathan tried to reach for her.
She pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
He lowered his hand.
"I wanted to tell you.""
"When?""
"When I had proof.""
"Six months wasn't enough?""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
Nathan looked toward the door.
"Of what my mother would do.""
Claire froze.
"What does your mother have to do with this?""
Nathan stared at the ceiling.
"Margaret was the one who arranged the third transfer.""
Claire felt sick.
"Whose baby was it?""
Nathan didn't answer.
"Nathan.""
He looked at her.
Then he whispered:
"My sister's.""
Claire stared.
"Your sister died before we got married.""
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
"That's what my mother told everyone.""
The monitor beeped steadily.
Claire shook her head.
"You're saying your sister was alive when Ellie was born?""
Nathan nodded.
"Her name was Sarah. She gave birth that night. Margaret told the hospital she had died during childbirth.""
"Why?""
"Because Sarah had discovered something about our family.""
"What?""
Nathan looked directly at Claire.
"She was planning to tell the police that Margaret had been stealing newborn identities for years.""
Claire's mouth went dry.
"Stealing babies?""
Nathan nodded.
"Not just switching them. Selling them.""
Claire took a step backward.
"How many?""
Nathan closed his eyes.
"I don't know.""
A nurse entered and checked his monitor.
"Mr. Harper, you need to rest.""
But Claire couldn't move.
Her entire marriage, her daughter's birth, and the family she had trusted were suddenly tangled in something monstrous.
Then Nathan opened his eyes again.
"There is something else.""
Claire looked at him.
"What now?""
Nathan's voice became almost inaudible.
"Sarah didn't die.""
Claire felt her knees weaken.
"Where is she?""
Nathan stared toward the door.
"She's been living in this hospital.""
Claire turned.
"Where?""
Nathan whispered the answer.
"Room 417.""
The number followed Claire down the corridor.
417.
The same number engraved on the silver key.
The same number on the storage locker.
The same number Nathan had been carrying into his funeral.
Detective Brooks walked beside her.
"Are you sure that's what he said?""
Claire nodded.
"Room 417.""
They reached the old maternity section.
A nurse stood behind the reception desk.
"Can I help you?""
"We need access to room 417," Brooks said, showing her badge.
The nurse frowned.
"That room has been closed for years.""
"Why?""
"Because it was converted into a medical records storage room.""
Claire pulled the silver key from her pocket.
"Does this belong to the room?""
The nurse stared at it.
Then her expression changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"From my husband.""
The nurse slowly stood.
"Wait here.""
She disappeared through a locked door.
A moment later, she returned with an older woman wearing a gray cardigan.
The woman looked at Claire.
Then at the key.
Her lips began trembling.
"You're Claire Harper.""
Claire nodded.
"Who are you?""
The woman reached into her pocket and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.
On the back was written:
Sarah and her daughter. October 12.
The older woman looked directly at Claire.
"Your husband asked me to give you this if he ever woke up.""
Claire took the photograph.
"Where is Sarah?""
The woman began crying.
May you like
Then she pointed toward a small door at the end of the hallway.
"She's been waiting for you.""
