Chapter 2: The Wife Who Wasn't Listed
Claire had always believed that secrets were difficult to keep in a marriage.
She was beginning to understand that the truth was sometimes hidden in places nobody thought to look.
At 2:17 a.m., she sat in a hospital waiting room with a paper cup of untouched coffee between her hands.
The fluorescent lights hummed overhead.
A television played silently in the corner.
Somewhere down the hallway, a child was crying.
Claire couldn't stop staring at the tablet screenshot she had taken.
Nathan had changed his emergency contact.
Not to his mother.
Not to his brother.
To Victoria Shaw.
Three days before his supposed death.
"Mrs. Harper?""
Claire looked up.
A woman in a navy suit stood near the entrance.
She was in her early forties, with shoulder-length dark hair and a leather folder tucked beneath one arm.
"I'm Claire.""
The woman extended her hand.
"Detective Lauren Brooks. I'm with the county police department.""
Claire stood.
"Is Nathan okay?""
"He's receiving medical care. I wanted to speak with you about the circumstances surrounding his original medical declaration.""
Claire's throat tightened.
"Are you investigating his death?""
"At this point, we're investigating an unusual medical incident.""
"He's my husband. You can speak plainly.""
Detective Brooks pulled out a chair.
"All right. We have reason to believe the original medical records may contain inaccuracies.""
Claire sat down.
"Someone told me his blood contained a substance that shouldn't have been there.""
Brooks opened her folder.
"Did the hospital tell you what it was?""
"No.""
"Good. We haven't confirmed the laboratory results yet.""
Claire frowned.
"Why is that good?""
"Because if someone deliberately harmed your husband, we don't want that person knowing exactly what we know.""
The words made Claire's skin crawl.
She leaned forward.
"Do you think someone tried to kill him?""
Detective Brooks didn't answer directly.
"I think we should consider every possibility.""
Claire looked down at her hands.
Her wedding ring caught the light.
"Then I need to tell you about Victoria Shaw.""
The detective's pen stopped moving.
"Who is she?""
"I don't know. But she sent my husband a message while he was in the ambulance.""
"What did it say?""
Claire repeated the words.
He's awake. You need to make sure she doesn't find out what happened.
Detective Brooks wrote them down.
"Did you recognize the number?""
"No.""
"Did you show anyone else?""
"Only the paramedic. I haven't told my mother-in-law about the message.""
"Good. Don't delete anything, and don't respond to the sender.""
Claire hesitated.
"There's something else.""
She told the detective about the second message.
The little girl wasn't supposed to touch him.
For the first time, Detective Brooks looked genuinely unsettled.
"Your daughter was in the casket?""
"Yes.""
"Did anyone know she was going to do that?""
Claire shook her head.
"She loved her father. She wouldn't let go of his hand.""
The detective closed her folder.
"Mrs. Harper, I need you to understand that your daughter's involvement may be important.""
Claire felt tears rise.
"She's four years old. She didn't do anything wrong.""
"I didn't say she did.""
"Then don't talk about her like she's part of some investigation.""
Brooks softened her voice.
"I'm trying to protect her.""
Claire looked away.
For three days, people had told her what she should believe.
Doctors had told her Nathan was dead.
The funeral director had told her there was nothing more they could do.
Her mother-in-law had told her not to ask questions.
Now a detective was telling her that her little girl might be connected to something dangerous.
Claire had reached her limit.
"I want to see my husband.""
Detective Brooks nodded.
"Let's see whether the doctor will allow it.""
Nathan was in a private room on the third floor.
A monitor displayed his heartbeat in steady green lines.
An oxygen tube rested beneath his nose.
Claire stopped at the doorway.
For a moment, she couldn't make herself walk forward.
She had seen this man laugh until tears ran down his cheeks. She had watched him paint Ellie's nursery, burn pancakes on Sunday mornings, and fall asleep on the couch with their daughter curled against his chest.
Now he looked like a stranger.
"Hi, handsome.""
Her voice trembled.
She pulled a chair beside his bed.
"I don't know what happened.""
She reached for his hand.
"It's been three days, Nathan. Three days of people telling me you're gone.""
Her tears fell onto the blanket.
"Ellie keeps asking when you're coming home.""
She swallowed.
"I told her you were sleeping.""
A small smile crossed her lips.
"She's been very brave. Braver than me.""
She leaned forward and kissed his knuckles.
"Please wake up.""
Nothing.
Then she noticed the hospital wristband.
It was loose around his wrist.
She gently adjusted it.
Something metallic slipped from beneath his palm and fell onto the sheet.
A small silver key.
Claire picked it up.
It was attached to a rectangular tag.
There was a number written on it.
417.
She looked at Nathan's face.
"What's this?""
No answer.
She turned the key over.
On the back, someone had engraved two letters.
V.S.
Victoria Shaw.
Claire's heart began beating faster.
She slipped the key into her pocket just as the door opened.
A nurse entered carrying a medication tray.
"Mrs. Harper? You're still here.""
"Yes.""
The nurse checked Nathan's monitor.
"How is he doing?""
"His condition is stable.""
"Has he said anything?""
"Not yet.""
The nurse adjusted his blanket.
Then she looked at Claire.
"You should get some rest.""
"I'll stay.""
The nurse nodded and moved toward the door.
Before leaving, she stopped.
"Oh, I almost forgot. A woman came by earlier asking about him.""
Claire straightened.
"What woman?""
"She said she was family.""
"What did she look like?""
"Blonde hair. Tall. Maybe forty.""
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
"Did she give you her name?""
The nurse checked her notes.
"Victoria Shaw.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"When was this?""
"About half an hour ago.""
"Did you let her in?""
The nurse shook her head.
"No. Your husband was listed as restricted visitation.""
Claire exhaled.
"Thank you.""
The nurse left.
Claire immediately called Detective Brooks.
"She's here.""
"Who?""
"Victoria Shaw. She came to the hospital.""
"Are you sure?""
"The nurse saw her. She asked to visit Nathan.""
"Where are you now?""
"In his room.""
"Don't leave. I'll send someone upstairs.""
Claire hung up.
Then she turned toward the window.
The hospital parking lot stretched beneath the dark sky.
A black SUV was parked near the entrance.
A woman stood beside it.
Even from three floors up, Claire could recognize the long blonde hair.
The woman looked directly toward Nathan's room.
Then she raised her phone.
Claire's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
She answered without speaking.
A woman's voice came through.
"Mrs. Harper?""
Claire's fingers tightened around the phone.
"Who is this?""
"Victoria.""
Claire's blood ran cold.
"What do you want?""
"I want to explain.""
"Explain what? Why you were listed as my husband's emergency contact?""
A pause.
Then Victoria said something that made Claire's breath catch.
"Because I was the person who was supposed to be with him when he died.""
Claire stared at the window.
"What does that mean?""
"It means Nathan and I had an agreement.""
"What agreement?""
Victoria sighed.
"Your husband was never supposed to come home to you.""
Claire felt the phone slipping in her hand.
"You're lying.""
"I wish I were.""
"Who are you?""
"I'm the woman who knows what happened three days ago.""
Claire stepped away from the window.
"Tell me.""
"Not over the phone.""
"Then come upstairs.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
Victoria's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because if they see me talking to you, they'll know I failed.""
"Who will?""
Before Victoria could answer, a loud crash sounded in the hallway.
Claire spun around.
A hospital security guard was shouting.
"Ma'am! Step away from the door!""
The room door swung open.
Detective Brooks rushed inside.
"Claire, get away from the window!""
Claire looked at her.
"What's happening?""
Brooks grabbed the curtain and pulled it shut.
"Someone just tried to access your husband's medical records using a stolen staff identification.""
Claire stared.
"Who?""
"We don't know yet.""
Then Brooks noticed the silver key in Claire's hand.
"Where did you get that?""
"From Nathan.""
The detective took one look at the engraved initials.
Her face changed.
"Mrs. Harper, give me that key.""
"Why?""
"Because I recognize it.""
Claire tightened her grip.
"From where?""
Detective Brooks looked toward Nathan's bed.
"Storage locker 417.""
Claire's stomach dropped.
"How do you know?""
The detective took a breath.
"Because we found a photograph of that locker in the file belonging to a woman who disappeared six months ago.""
"Who was she?""
Brooks looked directly at Claire.
"Victoria Shaw.""
At 3:06 a.m., Nathan moved.
It was barely noticeable.
A twitch of his fingers.
Then another.
Claire rushed to his bedside.
"Nathan?""
His eyelids fluttered.
The monitor beeped faster.
"Doctor!"" Claire shouted.
Dr. Reynolds hurried into the room with two nurses.
"What's happening?""
"He's moving!""
The doctor leaned over Nathan.
"Mr. Harper? Can you hear me?""
Nathan's eyes opened halfway.
They moved slowly across the room.
Then they stopped on Claire.
For one beautiful second, she saw recognition.
"Claire...""
She burst into tears.
"Oh, Nathan.""
She took his hand.
"I'm here. I'm right here.""
His lips moved.
She leaned closer.
"What is it, sweetheart?""
Nathan struggled to breathe.
Then he whispered two words.
"Find... Ellie.""
Claire frowned.
"What?""
His eyes filled with panic.
"Find... our daughter.""
Claire felt the room tilt.
"She's with Margaret. She's safe.""
Nathan shook his head weakly.
"No...""
He tried to lift his hand.
"Claire...""
"I'm listening.""
He looked at her with an expression she had never seen before.
Pure terror.
May you like
"She's not... with Margaret.""
And then the monitor began screaming.
