Chapter 6: The Woman Behind Room 417
The door opened with a soft metallic click.
Claire stepped into a narrow room filled with old medical cabinets.
There were no windows.
A single desk lamp illuminated a stack of yellowing files.
Detective Brooks followed her inside.
"Who is Sarah?"" Claire whispered.
The older woman remained near the doorway.
"Your husband's sister.""
"Where is she?""
The woman pointed toward a curtain at the back of the room.
Claire moved toward it slowly.
Every step seemed heavier than the last.
She pulled the curtain aside.
A woman sat in a wheelchair beside an oxygen machine.
Her hair was short and gray.
A thin scar ran along her jaw.
She looked older than Margaret, although Claire knew she was supposed to be younger.
But the eyes were unmistakable.
They were Nathan's eyes.
The woman looked up.
"Claire?""
Claire couldn't speak.
The woman smiled weakly.
"My brother said you would come.""
"You're Sarah?""
The woman nodded.
Claire stepped closer.
"I thought you were dead.""
Sarah looked down.
"That's what my mother wanted everyone to believe.""
Claire pulled out a chair.
"Why have you been hiding here?""
Sarah glanced at Detective Brooks.
"Because I know what happened to the babies.""
Claire's hands began shaking.
"Tell me about my daughter.""
Sarah closed her eyes.
"Her name was Grace.""
Claire felt a sob escape.
Grace.
She had never heard that name before.
"Where is she?""
Sarah reached beneath a blanket and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
A tiny birthmark was visible near the baby's left shoulder.
Claire stared.
She remembered seeing a similar mark during her pregnancy ultrasound.
"That's my daughter?""
Sarah nodded.
"Yes.""
Claire touched the photograph.
"Is she alive?""
Sarah's eyes filled.
"I believe she is.""
Claire covered her mouth.
"Where?""
Sarah turned toward the cabinets.
"Before I tell you, you need to understand why Margaret did what she did.""
Claire shook her head.
"I don't care about her reasons.""
"You should.""
Sarah spoke softly.
"Because she didn't switch the babies to help Victoria.""
Claire frowned.
"What?""
"Victoria was only part of it. Margaret had been arranging private adoptions for wealthy families who couldn't have children.""
Claire stared.
"She was selling babies?""
"She called it placement. She said she was helping children find better homes.""
"Without their mothers knowing?""
Sarah nodded.
"She used falsified medical records. Some babies were listed as stillborn. Others were transferred to private facilities.""
Detective Brooks took out her notebook.
"Do you have evidence?""
Sarah pointed toward a cabinet.
"Everything is in there.""
Brooks opened it.
Inside were dozens of folders, each marked with a date and a hospital identification number.
Claire recognized the date immediately.
October 12.
The night Ellie was born.
She pulled out the folder.
Three names were listed.
Claire Harper.
Victoria Shaw.
Sarah Harper.
Underneath each name were two columns.
Biological mother.
Discharged guardian.
Claire read the entries.
Her name appeared beside one baby.
Victoria's beside another.
Sarah's beside the third.
But the discharge information was different.
Claire Harper had been listed as the guardian of Emily Shaw's daughter.
Victoria Shaw had been listed as the guardian of Grace Harper.
And Sarah Harper's baby had been transferred to a private medical facility.
Claire looked up.
"Why did Margaret give my daughter to Victoria?""
Sarah shook her head.
"She didn't.""
Claire frowned.
"What?""
"Victoria took Ellie. Margaret helped her hide the switch, but she didn't choose which baby went where.""
"Then who did?""
Sarah looked toward Detective Brooks.
"Dr. Peter Lane.""
Brooks closed the folder.
"Why would he do that?""
"Because he was being paid by a private adoption network.""
Claire's stomach turned.
"And my daughter?""
Sarah's voice trembled.
"Grace was sent to a family in another state. They were told her biological mother had died.""
Claire felt tears running down her cheeks.
"Do you know their names?""
Sarah nodded.
"I kept a copy of the transfer document.""
She reached for another file.
Before she could open it, the lights flickered.
A loud bang sounded somewhere outside.
Detective Brooks immediately stood.
"Stay here.""
She moved toward the door.
Claire grabbed Sarah's hand.
"What's happening?""
Sarah's face had gone pale.
"Margaret found out you were coming.""
Brooks pulled out her radio.
"Unit two, report.""
Static.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Then the door slammed shut.
A mechanical lock clicked.
Claire rushed toward it.
"Detective?""
Brooks pulled at the handle.
"It's locked from the outside.""
Sarah began breathing rapidly.
"She's here.""
Claire turned.
"Who?""
Sarah looked toward the ceiling.
"Your mother-in-law.""
Outside the room, footsteps approached.
Slow.
Deliberate.
A key entered the lock.
Claire stepped in front of Sarah.
The door opened.
Margaret stood in the hallway.
She wore the same silk robe from earlier, but her hair was now neatly tied back.
In her right hand was a small black handbag.
In her left was a hospital access card.
"Claire," she said quietly.
Claire stared at her.
"How did you get here?""
Margaret glanced at Sarah.
"I see you've finally met her.""
Sarah's face tightened.
"Get out.""
Margaret sighed.
"Sarah, you should be resting.""
"Don't pretend you care about me.""
Margaret ignored her.
She looked at Claire.
"Come with me.""
"No.""
"Please.""
"You lied about my daughter. You lied about Nathan. You lied about your own daughter.""
Margaret's eyes filled.
"I did what I had to do.""
Claire laughed bitterly.
"That's what everyone says.""
Margaret stepped inside.
"You're not safe here.""
"Then tell me where my daughter is.""
Margaret's expression changed.
"Which one?""
Claire felt the air leave her lungs.
Sarah began crying.
"Don't you dare.""
Margaret looked at her.
"You've had four years to tell the truth. You chose to hide.""
"I was trying to protect them.""
"From me?""
"From what you became.""
Margaret's face hardened.
"You're confused, Sarah.""
"No. I remember everything.""
Claire stepped between them.
"Enough. Tell me where Grace is.""
Margaret looked at her for a long moment.
Then she opened her handbag.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper and placed it on the desk.
"Your biological daughter was adopted by a couple named Daniel and Susan Miller.""
Claire snatched the document.
"Where do they live?""
"Outside Boston.""
Claire stared.
"Why would you tell me now?""
Margaret's eyes filled.
"Because I want you to stop looking.""
Claire slowly raised her head.
"Why?""
"Because if you find Grace, everything Nathan has done will come out.""
"What has Nathan done?""
Margaret didn't answer.
Sarah suddenly spoke.
"Tell her about the money.""
Margaret turned.
"Be quiet.""
"Tell her!""
Sarah gripped the wheelchair armrests.
"Nathan wasn't investigating the adoption network to expose it. He was trying to protect himself.""
Claire looked between them.
"What does that mean?""
Margaret's voice became cold.
"Your husband signed the transfer documents.""
Claire shook her head.
"No.""
"His signature is on every file.""
"You're lying.""
Margaret pulled another document from her handbag.
It was a copy of an authorization form.
Nathan Harper.
His signature.
His company seal.
And a date six months earlier.
Claire stared at it.
"Why would he sign this?""
Margaret lowered her voice.
"Because he wanted to make sure Ellie remained with you.""
Claire felt sick.
"You mean he knew the adoption network was operating?""
"Yes.""
"And he helped them?""
Margaret nodded.
"At first.""
Sarah began crying harder.
"Don't believe her. She's twisting everything.""
Margaret looked at Claire.
"Nathan was involved before he discovered what they were doing. When he realized children were being transferred without their mothers' consent, he tried to withdraw.""
"Then why didn't he go to the police?""
"Because he had already signed the papers.""
Claire looked down at the document.
Her husband had hidden the truth.
Her mother-in-law had hidden the truth.
And now even Sarah seemed to know more than she was saying.
"Where is Grace?"" Claire asked again.
Margaret sighed.
"She's safe.""
"Give me the address.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
Margaret looked toward the door.
"Because Daniel and Susan Miller don't know they're raising a child who was illegally transferred.""
Claire's hands shook.
"Then I'll tell them.""
Margaret stepped closer.
"If you do, you could destroy that little girl's life.""
Claire stared at her.
"She's my daughter.""
"And Ellie is the child you raised. Do you really want to tear apart two families?""
Claire couldn't answer.
For the first time, Margaret's words struck something painful.
Ellie.
Her little girl.
The child who called her Mommy.
The child who still believed her father was simply sleeping.
Claire couldn't imagine telling Ellie that everything she knew about her birth was wrong.
But she couldn't imagine abandoning Grace either.
Sarah reached for Claire's hand.
"Don't let Margaret choose for you.""
Margaret's expression hardened.
"Enough.""
She pulled a small envelope from her handbag.
"Take this and leave.""
Claire opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A little girl, approximately four years old, stood in front of a birthday cake.
Dark curls.
Bright eyes.
A small birthmark near her left shoulder.
Claire stopped breathing.
The photograph was dated three months earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
Grace Miller. Age four.
Claire touched the picture.
"Where did you get this?""
Margaret looked away.
"Someone sent it to me.""
"Who?""
Before Margaret could answer, Sarah suddenly grabbed Claire's wrist.
"Look at the necklace.""
Claire looked closer.
The little girl in the photograph wore a tiny silver necklace.
A heart-shaped pendant.
Claire recognized it immediately.
She had bought two identical pendants before Ellie was born.
One for each daughter.
She had kept one in a jewelry box for years.
The other had disappeared from the hospital room.
Claire began trembling.
"That's my necklace.""
Sarah nodded.
"Because that child is yours.""
Margaret closed her eyes.
Then Claire noticed something else.
The photograph wasn't taken in Massachusetts.
She recognized the background.
A yellow brick building.
A white fence.
A blue mailbox.
It was Margaret's own house.
Claire slowly raised her head.
"Where was this photograph taken?""
Margaret didn't answer.
Claire held it up.
"This is your backyard.""
Sarah started crying.
"Claire...""
Margaret's face went completely white.
Then Claire heard a small voice behind her.
"Grandma?""
Everyone turned.
Ellie stood in the doorway.
Her stuffed rabbit hung from one hand.
She looked at Margaret, then at Claire.
"Grandma said I had a sister.""
Claire dropped to her knees.
"Baby, what are you doing here?""
Ellie walked toward her.
"She said my sister was coming home.""
Claire pulled her into her arms.
Then Ellie whispered something that made the entire room go silent.
"Mommy, I saw her.""
Claire looked into her daughter's eyes.
"Who, sweetheart?""
"The little girl in Grandma's house.""
Claire felt her heart stop.
"What little girl?""
Ellie pointed toward the hallway.
"The girl who looks just like me.""
Margaret took a step backward.
Sarah began sobbing.
And Detective Brooks finally understood.
The child in the photograph wasn't thousands of miles away.
May you like
Grace Miller had been living in Margaret Harper's house.
All along.
