Chapter 9: The Last Message From Lily

For a moment, nobody reacted.

Not because they didn’t understand.

Because they understood too well.

The message on Caleb’s phone wasn’t a threat hidden behind complicated words.

It was simple.

Direct.

Personal.

*Emily is.*

My name.

Not Lily’s.

Not Jason’s.

Mine.

I felt the room become smaller.

My father immediately moved toward me.

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

Protective.

The same voice he used when I was a child and a storm knocked out the power.

The same voice he used when he promised nothing bad would happen.

But this time, he looked afraid.

“Emily, come here.””

I didn’t move.

Because my mind was somewhere else.

With Lily.

With the last months of her life.

With every time she had looked at me like she wanted to say something but stopped herself.

She knew.

She knew someone else was in danger.

She knew the truth didn’t end with her.

Daniel took the phone from Caleb.

“Who sent this?””

Caleb shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“You have no idea?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him carefully.

“You expect us to believe that?””

Caleb’s face tightened.

“I swear.””

Rachel stared at him.

“Why would someone threaten you?””

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“Because I know too much.””

The answer chilled everyone.

Daniel looked at the message again.

“Who else knows about this investigation?””

Nobody answered.

Then Sarah spoke.

“Lily.””

Everyone turned.

Sarah looked at me.

“She told me there was one person she couldn’t identify.””

Daniel frowned.

“What person?””

Sarah swallowed.

“She said Jason and Caleb were not acting alone.””

The church fell silent again.

I was starting to hate silence.

Because every silence meant another secret was waiting.

Daniel walked toward the box Lily had left.

“There is one file we have not opened.””

My heart tightened.

“What file?””

Daniel looked at the USB drive.

“The final one.””

He turned the laptop around.

A folder appeared.

The title made my hands shake.

*Only Emily.*

I stared at the screen.

“Why didn’t she send it to me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Lily believed your phone and home might be monitored.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“She didn’t trust digital communication.””

I remembered.

The strange calls.

The way Lily would sometimes ask if I was alone before talking.

The way she had started avoiding certain topics over the phone.

I thought she was stressed.

I thought she was scared about Jason.

I never imagined she was afraid someone was listening.

Daniel opened the file.

A video appeared.

The date was the night before Lily died.

My breath caught.

“Play it.””

Nobody spoke.

The video started.

Lily appeared.

But this time, she wasn’t in her house.

She was somewhere outside.

A dark room.

Maybe a garage.

Her face was barely visible.

“Emily.””

I immediately started crying.

Because hearing her voice again felt impossible.

“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””

She looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No…”

My mother held my hand.

Lily continued.

“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””

A pause.

“But I was scared that if I told you, you would try to help me.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And that would put you in danger.””

I covered my mouth.

That was Lily.

Even when she was afraid, she was protecting everyone else.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

She leaned closer to the camera.

“Jason is not the beginning of this.””

My father closed his eyes.

“He is only the person who continued it.””

Daniel looked at him.

Lily continued.

“The person who destroyed our family years ago never left.””

A chill moved through me.

“She has been close to us the entire time.””

Everyone looked around.

“She.””

A woman.

Not a man.

Daniel paused the video.

My heart raced.

“She knew?””

Sarah nodded slowly.

“Lily believed it.””

Daniel played the video again.

Lily looked terrified.

“Emily, I need you to understand something.””

She took a shaky breath.

“The person who helped destroy Mom’s life is someone you know.””

The screen flickered.

Then Lily whispered:

“Someone you trust.””

The video stopped.

The church remained silent.

My father looked at Daniel.

“We need to know who.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

He restarted the video.

The image returned.

Lily continued.

“I found the proof in the old records.””

She looked toward the side.

Like she was checking if someone was nearby.

“The person who changed the documents after Mom disappeared.””

My breathing slowed.

Because suddenly I understood.

Changed documents.

Missing records.

Hidden evidence.

Someone had not just covered up a crime.

Someone had controlled the story.

Lily continued.

“The person who convinced Dad to stop searching.””

My father looked down.

The words hurt him.

But he didn’t deny them.

“The person who made sure everyone believed Mom abandoned us.””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Emily…”

She paused.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology terrified me.

Because Lily only apologized when she knew something would hurt.

“The person who did this is…”

The video froze.

The screen went black.

Everyone gasped.

Daniel immediately checked the laptop.

“What happened?””

“The file corrupted.””

“No.””

Daniel tried again.

Nothing.

Jason suddenly laughed.

It was a strange sound.

Relief.

For the first time all day, he looked less afraid.

“It seems your sister’s big revelation failed.””

I turned toward him.

And I hated how calm he looked.

Daniel stared at him.

“Did it?””

Jason said nothing.

Then the church doors opened.

A police officer entered.

Everyone turned.

The officer looked around.

“Is Emily Carter here?””

My father stepped forward.

“Why?””

The officer looked at me.

“We need to speak with you.””

My stomach tightened.

“About what?””

The officer hesitated.

Then he held up a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a phone.

Lily’s phone.

The one everyone thought had been destroyed.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you find that?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“It was delivered anonymously this morning.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“By who?””

The officer shook his head.

“We don’t know.””

He looked at me.

“But there is a message saved on it.””

My hands went cold.

“What message?””

The officer unlocked the screen.

Then he handed me the phone.

I saw the last text.

Sent from Lily’s number.

Sent after her death.

Impossible.

The message was only one sentence.

*Emily, if you are reading this, I was right about her.*

My heart raced.

About her.

Not him.

Her.

The officer continued.

“There was also a recording attached.””

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

“Play it.””

The audio began.

Static.

Then Lily’s voice.

Barely audible.

“Emily…”

I closed my eyes.

“I know who helped Jason.””

A pause.

“But that’s not the person you should be afraid of.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Then Lily whispered:

“The person who has been protecting him all this time…”

The audio cut.

Everyone froze.

Then one final sound played.

A woman’s voice.

A voice none of us expected.

A voice I recognized.

Because I had heard it my entire life.

The voice said:

“Lily should have stayed quiet.””

My blood ran cold.

My mother screamed.

Because she knew the voice too.

My father whispered:

“No…”

May you like

And from the back of the church, Margaret Reed slowly stood.

Because the voice belonged to her.
