Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Buried

The church was no longer a place of mourning.

It was a courtroom.

Every person standing inside those walls had become a witness.

And my father was the one everyone was waiting to hear from.

He sat in the front row, staring at the floor.

The man who had spent my entire life teaching me that honesty mattered couldn’t look at me.

Not even once.

I walked toward him slowly.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

I had never heard him sound so tired.

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

Two words that somehow hurt more than a denial.

Because apologies meant there was something to apologize for.

My mother reached for his hand.

“Thomas…”

He pulled away.

Not from her.

From the guilt.

Sarah stood quietly nearby.

She looked like someone who had been carrying this secret for twenty years and was finally too exhausted to hold it alone.

Daniel placed Lily’s notebook on the table.

“Mr. Carter, your daughter spent weeks investigating the connection between her death and your wife’s disappearance.””

My father looked up.

“I never wanted Lily involved.””

“But she became involved.””

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“She found evidence.””

My father looked at me.

“She was always too much like you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He gave a sad smile.

“Stubborn.””

A painful silence followed.

“She never stopped searching for answers.””

I swallowed.

“Because nobody gave her the truth.””

My father looked down again.

“You’re right.””

The admission felt like a crack in the foundation of everything I knew.

My father took a long breath.

“Your mother did not leave us.””

Nobody moved.

The words landed heavily.

“She was taken.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I felt the room tilt.

Even though Sarah had already said it.

Even though Lily’s evidence had pointed toward it.

Hearing my father say it made it real.

“Who?”” I whispered.

My father looked toward Sarah.

Then toward Daniel.

Then finally at me.

“I don’t know who ordered it.””

A pause.

“But I know who helped hide it.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

He looked at the person nobody expected.

Margaret Reed.

The room exploded.

“What?”” my mother said.

Margaret stepped backward.

“No.””

My father continued.

“She wasn’t the person who took your mother.””

Margaret’s face tightened.

“But she knew.””

Jason stared at his mother.

“You knew about this?””

Margaret looked away.

“I was young.””

Nobody believed that was an answer.

Daniel looked at her.

“Explain.””

Margaret sat down slowly.

“When your mother disappeared, I was married to Jason’s father.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Your mother discovered something.””

“What?””

“She discovered that my husband was involved with people he shouldn’t have been involved with.””

The church became silent.

“Money laundering. Illegal deals. People who solved problems permanently.””

Jason shook his head.

“This is about my father?””

Margaret looked at him.

“Yes.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because suddenly the past and present were connecting.

Lily had not discovered one secret.

She had discovered a family history of secrets.

Daniel turned to Margaret.

“And when Lily found evidence connecting Jason and Caleb to the same network?””

Margaret nodded.

“She realized the truth.””

My voice was barely audible.

“What truth?””

Margaret looked at me.

“That some people never change.””

Jason looked furious.

“You’re blaming me for something my father did?””

“No.””

Margaret stared at him.

“I’m blaming you for choosing to become like him.””

Jason looked away.

For the first time, he had no response.

Daniel opened Lily’s notebook again.

“There is one more entry.””

He read:

“‘October 18th. I found the connection. Jason’s father was involved in Mom’s disappearance. Jason knew more than he admitted.’”

My stomach dropped.

I turned toward Jason.

“You knew?””

Jason immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why did Lily write your name?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer came too fast.

My father noticed.

“You do.””

Jason looked at him.

“What?””

My father’s voice became cold.

“You knew.””

Jason stared.

“You’re accusing me?””

“No.””

My father stood.

“I’m remembering.””

The church watched as the two men faced each other.

My father had always treated Jason like a son.

He had welcomed him into our family.

And now he was looking at him like a stranger.

“After Lily found those records, she came to me.””

Jason froze.

“She told me she had proof.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You never mentioned this.””

My father nodded.

“Because Lily asked me not to.””

I felt anger rise.

“Everyone knew something.””

My father looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“That’s what everyone says.””

My voice cracked.

“But everyone’s protection left Lily alone.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

Good.

Because Lily had been hurt.

My father looked away.

“I failed her.””

The room went quiet.

Then Sarah spoke.

“Lily didn’t think you failed her.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She told me you were the only person she still trusted.””

My father closed his eyes.

A tear fell.

Daniel looked at the notebook.

“Lily also recorded a conversation.””

Jason immediately reacted.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You seem very certain about what it contains.””

Jason said nothing.

The audio file played.

Static.

Then voices.

Lily.

And Jason.

“I know about the money.””

A pause.

Jason’s voice.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Lily.

“I know about your father.””

Silence.

Then Jason:

“Don’t say his name.””

The church went completely still.

Lily:

“Why? Because you know what he did?””

Jason:

“Stop.””

Lily:

“Did you know about my mother’s disappearance before you married me?””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Rachel looked at Jason with horror.

“You knew?””

Jason looked at her.

“Rachel…”

“No.””

She stepped away.

“You knew she was searching.””

He said nothing.

“You knew she was afraid.””

Silence.

“And you still stayed.””

Jason’s face changed.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

Regret.

But it was too late.

Daniel looked toward Caleb.

“Your turn.””

Caleb stared.

“What?””

“You know something.””

Caleb laughed nervously.

“I don’t.””

Daniel nodded.

“Then explain why Lily’s final note says you were the person who physically entered the house.””

Caleb went pale.

Jason looked at him.

“What?””

The room froze.

Daniel continued.

“She wrote that the person who pushed her was wearing a watch.””

He looked at Caleb.

“A watch matching one you owned.””

Caleb shook his head.

“No.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Lily told me.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She said she saw him.””

Caleb’s face collapsed.

“No.””

“She said she recognized the watch.””

My hands trembled.

Because now the answer was almost clear.

Daniel reached into the box one final time.

He pulled out a photograph.

A close-up.

A hand.

A wrist.

A watch.

“Lily took this picture before she died.””

Caleb stared at it.

Because the watch was unmistakable.

His watch.

Jason looked at his brother.

“You did it?””

Caleb looked at him.

And something inside him broke.

“I didn’t mean to.””

A gasp moved through the church.

Margaret started crying.

My father whispered:

“Oh God.””

Caleb covered his face.

“She was going to expose everything.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“Everything?””

Caleb looked up.

“The money. The old case. The people behind it.””

He looked at Jason.

“You said she had to be stopped.””

Jason’s face went blank.

“I never told you to kill her.””

The words came out.

And everyone heard them.

Nobody had accused Jason of murder directly.

But he had just defended himself against it.

Rachel whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Daniel slowly closed the notebook.

“Then we finally have the answer.””

But before anyone could react, Caleb’s phone buzzed again.

He looked down.

Another message.

This time, his face turned completely white.

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?””

Caleb didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Caleb slowly turned the screen around.

The message was only four words.

*You were never the target.*

A second message appeared beneath it.

*Emily is.*

The entire church went silent.

Because suddenly, Lily’s final warning made sense.

She hadn’t only been trying to save herself.

She had been trying to save me.

May you like

And somewhere outside that church…

someone was still watching.
