Chapter 5: The Name Written in Blood
“The name she wrote was…”
Daniel stopped.
The pause was unbearable.
Every person in that church leaned forward, waiting for the answer.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
I could hear my mother crying quietly beside me.
I could hear Jason’s uneven breathing.
But Daniel didn’t finish the sentence.
Not yet.
Instead, he looked down at the paper.
“She requested that the final statement be read after one condition was met.””
Jason immediately looked confused.
“What condition?””
Daniel folded the page.
“That everyone connected to the events leading up to her death was present.””
His eyes moved across the room.
“Everyone.””
The word felt heavy.
Everyone.
My gaze moved from Jason to Margaret.
Then toward the church doors.
That was when I noticed someone else.
A man standing outside the glass entrance.
Watching.
My stomach tightened.
Because I recognized him.
Caleb Reed.
Jason’s younger brother.
The man whose name had just been dragged into the center of everything.
He wasn’t crying.
He wasn’t shocked.
He was just standing there.
Like he had been waiting.
Daniel noticed him too.
“Mr. Reed.””
The entire church turned.
Caleb slowly opened the door.
The rain followed him inside.
He walked forward with his hands in his coat pockets.
Jason stared at him.
“You knew about this?””
Caleb didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Margaret looked devastated.
“Caleb…”
He looked at his mother.
“I told you not to come here.””
The room froze.
My father stood.
“What does that mean?””
Caleb glanced around.
At the family.
At the attorney.
At the laptop.
Then he looked at Jason.
“You should have gotten rid of the video.””
The air disappeared.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Jason’s face turned pale.
“What did you say?””
Caleb seemed to realize his mistake.
Only for a moment.
Then his expression hardened again.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I think you should explain yourself.””
Caleb laughed softly.
“Explain what?””
“The fact that you just admitted you knew about the video.””
Caleb looked at him.
“You don’t know anything.””
Daniel nodded.
“Actually, I know quite a lot.””
He opened his briefcase again.
“This church is not the only place where Lily left evidence.””
Caleb’s expression changed.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But it was there.
Fear.
Daniel noticed.
“Before her death, Lily contacted me.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“She sent me copies of everything she found.””
Jason shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“She was afraid someone would destroy the originals.””
Caleb looked toward Jason.
And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.
Anger.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Anger.
“You said she didn’t have anything.””
Jason’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Caleb stepped back.
“You told me she didn’t have proof.””
The words came out before he could stop them.
Rachel looked at Jason.
“You told him?””
Jason looked around.
Everyone was staring.
His perfect story was collapsing.
Piece by piece.
Daniel turned to Caleb.
“Thank you for clarifying that.””
Caleb clenched his jaw.
“I didn’t say anything.””
“You did.””
“No.””
“You admitted Mr. Reed told you she had no proof.””
Caleb looked away.
Daniel walked toward the laptop.
“I believe it is time to hear Lily’s final message.””
The video played again.
My sister appeared.
This time, she looked exhausted.
Like she had been fighting alone for too long.
“If you are watching this part…”
She paused.
“…then Jason has probably already tried to convince you I was confused.””
Jason looked down.
Lily continued.
“He will say I misunderstood things. He will say I was emotional. He will say he loved me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And maybe he did love me once.””
That sentence hurt more than anger would have.
Because Lily had not hated him.
She had loved him.
“But love is not enough when someone chooses to hurt you.””
The church stayed silent.
“I found out Jason wasn’t only having an affair.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I found out he and Caleb had been hiding financial problems.””
Caleb’s face changed.
Lily continued.
“They owed money to dangerous people.””
A murmur spread through the church.
Daniel paused the video.
My father looked at him.
“Dangerous people?””
Daniel nodded.
“Individuals involved in illegal gambling operations.””
Jason immediately spoke.
“That’s not true.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then why did Lily find payments leaving your accounts?””
Jason opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The video continued.
Lily looked directly into the camera.
“Jason thought if I discovered the money, I would leave him.””
She shook her head.
“He was right.””
A tear fell.
“I was going to leave.””
My hands covered my mouth.
I already knew.
But hearing her say it made it real.
“I had spoken to Daniel. I had prepared the paperwork.””
Daniel looked at me.
I understood.
The attorney wasn’t just handling a will.
He had been helping Lily escape.
“She was planning to divorce Jason,” Daniel said quietly.
The room erupted.
My mother looked at Jason.
“You were going to lose her.””
Jason didn’t answer.
Lily continued.
“But then I discovered something worse.””
The video became darker.
“I found out Jason wasn’t planning to let me leave.””
Jason stepped forward.
“That’s a lie.””
Nobody reacted.
Lily continued.
“He told Caleb I was becoming a problem.””
Caleb looked down.
My stomach twisted.
“He told him I had found the accounts.””
Daniel paused.
Then he looked at Caleb.
“Would you like to deny that?””
Caleb said nothing.
That was the first time I saw him look afraid.
The video continued.
“I recorded their conversation.””
A shock went through the room.
Jason froze.
“What?””
Lily looked at the camera.
“I put a recorder in Jason’s office.””
My heart raced.
“My husband thought he was alone.””
Daniel connected another file.
An audio recording appeared.
The date was two days before Lily’s death.
Everyone waited.
Then Jason’s voice filled the church.
“You don’t understand. If she leaves, everything falls apart.””
A second voice.
Caleb.
“She knows about the money?””
“Yes.””
“What are you going to do?””
A long pause.
Then Jason spoke.
“She can’t tell anyone.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Because those words were not a confession.
Not exactly.
But they were enough.
Rachel looked at Jason.
“You said you were protecting yourself.””
Jason looked at her.
“Rachel, listen to me.””
“No.””
She stepped away.
“You let me believe she was the problem.””
Jason reached toward her.
“You don’t understand.””
She laughed bitterly.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I understand perfectly.””
Daniel turned the page.
“We still have not reached Lily’s final statement.””
He looked at everyone.
“The name she wrote was not based on suspicion.””
A pause.
“She wrote it because she saw the person who pushed her.””
The church became silent.
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked down.
Then he said:
“Lily identified the person who entered the staircase behind her.””
He lifted his eyes.
“The person she named was…”
A phone rang.
Everyone jumped.
The sound came from Caleb’s pocket.
He looked down.
The screen was visible.
Unknown number.
He hesitated.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Do not answer that.””
Caleb stared at the phone.
Then it rang again.
And again.
Jason whispered:
“Who is calling you?””
Caleb didn’t respond.
The phone finally stopped.
Then a message appeared.
Caleb looked at it.
And his entire face changed.
I saw the fear.
The real fear.
He turned the phone away.
But not before I caught the first words.
*I know what Lily recorded.*
Daniel stepped closer.
“Show me the message.””
Caleb shook his head.
“No.””
“Mr. Reed.””
“No!””
His sudden outburst shocked everyone.
Because Caleb was no longer acting confident.
He looked trapped.
Daniel held out his hand.
“Show me the phone.””
Slowly…
Caleb did.
Daniel read the message.
Then his expression changed.
“What is it?”” my father asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He looked toward Jason.
Then Margaret.
Then me.
And finally, he said:
“This message came from the person Lily was most afraid of.””
The church doors creaked open behind us.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
An older woman.
Someone none of us recognized.
Except Margaret.
Because the moment she saw her…
she whispered:
“No.””
The woman walked inside.
And she was carrying a small box.
A box Lily had apparently hidden before she died.
The woman looked at Daniel.
“I was told to bring this here only if the truth started coming out.””
Daniel stared at the box.
“Who told you?””
The woman looked toward Lily’s family.
Then at Jason.
May you like
And answered:
“Lily Reed.””
