Chapter 7: The Woman From My Father’s Past

For a few seconds, I forgot where I was.

I forgot about the funeral.

I forgot about Jason.

I forgot about the evidence spread across the church.

Because my father had just said something that made the entire world shift beneath my feet.

“Your sister found the woman who knows what happened the night your mother disappeared.””

My mother.

The word echoed in my mind.

My mother had been gone for twenty years.

Everyone in Willow Creek knew the story.

At least, they knew the story we had been told.

A young woman.

A tragic accident.

A vehicle found abandoned near an old highway.

No body recovered.

No answers.

Just a family forced to live with a question that never went away.

I had been six years old.

Lily had been twelve.

And my father had spent two decades telling us to stop searching.

“Some things don’t have answers, Emily.””

That was what he always said.

But now a woman was standing in front of me.

A woman my father claimed was dead.

And Lily had known she existed.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He couldn’t meet my eyes.

That hurt more than anything.

Because my father had always been my safe place.

The person who showed up.

The person who held everything together.

But now he was standing in a church full of secrets.

And he was one of them.

Sarah Carter stepped forward.

“I didn’t want to hurt you.””

My voice came out cold.

“Then why didn’t you tell us you were alive?””

Sarah looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked toward Jason.

Then toward Margaret.

Then finally at my father.

“Of the same people your sister was afraid of.””

The church became silent.

Daniel walked closer.

“Sarah, Lily believed you were the key to understanding what happened.””

Sarah nodded.

“She was right.””

My father finally spoke.

“Sarah, don’t.””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Desperate.

Sarah stared at him.

“You had twenty years to tell them.””

My heart started pounding.

“Tell us what?””

My father looked at me.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“No more.””

My voice shook.

“I watched my sister die because everyone around her kept secrets.””

I looked at Jason.

“I watched her funeral become an investigation.””

Then at Margaret.

“I watched people protect lies.””

Finally, I looked at my father.

“I will not stand here while you do the same thing.””

His face broke.

And for a moment, he looked less like my father and more like a man carrying a weight too heavy to hold.

Sarah took a deep breath.

“Lily found me three months ago.””

My heart sank.

Three months.

That was before Lily died.

“How?””

Sarah looked at me.

“She was searching through old records.””

Daniel nodded.

“Lily contacted me after discovering irregularities in your mother’s disappearance file.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“Because Lily asked me not to.””

That answer hurt.

But I understood.

Because Lily had been trying to protect me.

Even from the truth.

Sarah continued.

“She found documents that were supposed to have been destroyed.””

My father closed his eyes.

“What documents?””

Sarah looked at him.

“You know.””

The tension between them was unbearable.

I looked between them.

“Dad.””

He stayed silent.

“Dad, what documents?””

Sarah answered for him.

“Documents proving your mother did not disappear by accident.””

The room went still.

My mother sat down hard.

I grabbed the back of a chair.

“No.””

The word left my mouth without permission.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Sarah’s eyes softened.

“I know how it sounds.””

“You’re saying my mother was taken?””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.””

My father whispered:

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

He looked exhausted.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I stared at him.

“Protect me from what?””

He didn’t answer.

“From knowing the truth?””

A tear moved down his face.

And seeing my father cry was almost worse than everything else.

Because I had spent my entire life believing he was the one person who would never lie to me.

Sarah looked at Jason.

“Your brother and your husband are not the first people in this family to hide something.””

Jason frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Everything.””

Daniel opened the notebook again.

“There is something Lily wrote that we have not read yet.””

He turned several pages.

“Emily, your sister discovered a connection between your mother’s disappearance and the current events involving Jason.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

Daniel looked at Jason.

“Through the same person.””

Jason’s face changed.

“No.””

Nobody missed it.

Daniel continued.

“Lily believed the person who helped cover up what happened to your mother twenty years ago was connected to the person involved in her death.””

The room erupted.

My father stood.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Is it?””

My father said nothing.

Daniel picked up the photograph from earlier.

The one showing Jason with the unknown man.

He turned it around.

“There is something you need to see.””

He placed it on the table.

A small mark was visible in the corner.

A date.

A location.

My father looked at it.

And went completely still.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

His lips parted.

“That picture…”

He picked it up with shaking hands.

“It was taken at the old Carter property.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Sarah reacted.

Because she knew.

“That’s where they took her.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Sarah looked at my father.

“Your mother.””

My father sat down.

The strongest man I had ever known suddenly looked broken.

Jason spoke.

“This is insane.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Then perhaps you can explain why your brother was photographed at the same location.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer.

The pieces were connecting.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Jason looked at Caleb.

“You told me you never went there.””

Caleb’s face tightened.

“I didn’t.””

“You’re lying.””

Caleb looked angry.

“You’re the one who said we needed to handle the problem.””

A shocked silence followed.

Jason stared at him.

“What did you say?””

Caleb immediately realized what he had done.

Rachel stepped backward.

“You two…”

Daniel interrupted.

“Enough.””

He looked at Caleb.

“You have spent this entire time trying to protect yourself.””

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“Protect myself?””

His eyes moved toward Jason.

“He promised me everything would be fine.””

Jason looked furious.

“Shut up.””

“No.””

Caleb’s voice rose.

“I’m done.””

Margaret looked horrified.

“Caleb, don’t.””

But he continued.

“You told me Lily was going to ruin everything.””

The church went silent.

“You told me if she left, we would lose everything.””

Jason’s face hardened.

“Careful.””

Caleb laughed.

“There it is.””

He looked around.

“Everyone finally sees him.””

Jason stepped forward.

“You were the one who went upstairs.””

The words hit like a gunshot.

Nobody moved.

Caleb froze.

Then slowly looked at his brother.

“What?””

Jason’s expression changed.

He knew he had said too much.

Daniel immediately stepped closer.

“What did you mean by that?””

Jason said nothing.

Caleb stared at him.

“You said you would handle it.””

Jason looked away.

“You went too far.””

My entire body went cold.

Because in that moment, the truth was no longer hidden behind accusations.

It was standing in front of us.

Two brothers.

Two decades of secrets.

Two lives destroyed.

Daniel picked up Lily’s final note.

“We still have not read the name Lily wrote.””

Everyone looked at him.

Jason’s face went pale.

Daniel unfolded the paper.

“My sister knew exactly who pushed her.””

He looked at me.

“She also knew why.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Because suddenly I understood.

Lily wasn’t only trying to expose her killer.

She was trying to uncover something much older.

Something connected to our family.

Daniel began reading.

“‘Emily, if you are hearing this, then the person who hurt me has been revealed.’”

He paused.

“‘But please remember one thing.’”

His voice lowered.

“‘The person who pushed me is not the person who started all of this.’”

The church went silent.

Daniel continued.

“‘The beginning goes back twenty years.’”

My father looked terrified.

Sarah closed her eyes.

And Lily’s final words appeared on the page:

“‘Ask Dad why he lied about the night Mom disappeared.’”
