Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Perfect Marriage

The video stopped for three seconds.

Three seconds that felt longer than the entire funeral.

Lily’s face remained frozen on the screen.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

Not sadness.

Not anger.

Fear.

The kind of fear that made my hands go numb.

Nobody in the church moved.

Nobody even seemed willing to breathe too loudly.

Then Jason spoke.

“That’s fake.””

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Everyone turned toward him.

He pointed at the laptop.

“That video is fake. Someone edited it.””

Daniel Hayes didn’t look surprised.

“I expected you might say that.””

Jason’s eyes narrowed.

“You expected?””

“Yes.””

The answer hit him harder than an argument would have.

My father stood.

“You knew this was coming?””

Daniel closed the laptop.

“I knew Mr. Reed would attempt to discredit anything that threatened his version of events.””

Jason’s face darkened.

“You don’t know anything about my marriage.””

Daniel looked at him calmly.

“No.””

A pause.

“But your wife did.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked back at the laptop.

At the paused image of my sister.

Three days before she died, Lily had sat alone in her kitchen and recorded a message because she believed she might not survive.

The thought nearly broke me.

I remembered that kitchen.

The yellow curtains she loved.

The little magnets on her refrigerator.

The empty space where Noah’s ultrasound picture had been hanging.

My sister had been preparing for a future she was afraid she wouldn’t have.

Daniel reopened the file.

The video continued.

Lily took a deep breath.

“If Jason is standing there watching this, I need you to listen carefully.””

The church became silent again.

“Because you have spent months convincing everyone that you are the victim.””

Jason’s expression hardened.

Lily continued.

“You told people I was stressed. Emotional. Unstable. You told them pregnancy was making me paranoid.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I felt anger rising in my chest.

Because I remembered.

Jason had said those things.

Not directly to us.

But little comments.

Small enough to ignore.

“Lily has been anxious lately.””

“She worries too much.””

“The pregnancy hormones are getting to her.””

At the time, we thought he was being concerned.

Now they sounded different.

They sounded like preparation.

Lily looked down in the video.

“I wanted to believe I was wrong.””

Her voice cracked.

“I wanted to believe my husband was just making mistakes. I wanted to believe Rachel was just a friend. I wanted to believe the messages I found had an explanation.””

Rachel looked away.

Jason immediately turned toward her.

“Don’t listen to this.””

Rachel stared at him.

“No.””

The word surprised everyone.

Including Jason.

She wiped a tear from her cheek.

“I think I need to.””

For the first time since entering the church, Rachel looked completely alone.

Lily’s voice continued.

“But then I found something else.””

Daniel stopped the video.

Jason immediately looked at him.

“Why did you stop?””

“Because this is where Lily requested a specific document be opened.””

Daniel removed another envelope from his briefcase.

This one was smaller.

He looked at Rachel.

“Mrs. Reed instructed that this be given to you.””

Rachel hesitated.

“To me?””

“Yes.””

Jason stepped forward.

“No.””

Daniel didn’t even look at him.

“Ms. Morgan has the right to receive it.””

Rachel slowly walked forward.

She took the envelope.

Her hands were shaking.

She looked at Jason before opening it.

“What is this?””

Jason didn’t answer.

And that silence told her more than words could.

Rachel opened the envelope.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Photographs.

Her eyes moved quickly across the pages.

Then she stopped.

A small sound escaped her.

Almost like a gasp.

“No.””

Jason’s face changed.

“Rachel.””

She looked up.

“You told me she knew.””

Nobody spoke.

Rachel looked down again.

“You told me Lily agreed to the divorce.””

My heart skipped.

Divorce.

My sister had been planning to leave him.

Jason shook his head.

“Rachel, listen—”

“You said she was already gone emotionally.””

Rachel’s voice grew louder.

“You said she was staying because of the baby.””

Jason reached for her.

She stepped back.

“Don’t.””

That single word echoed through the church.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Mrs. Reed discovered that Mr. Reed had been telling different stories to different people.””

Rachel looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel turned to the documents in her hand.

“You were told one version.””

He looked at Jason.

“Mrs. Reed was told another.””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“What version did he tell her?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily’s video continued.

Daniel pressed play.

My sister appeared again.

“I found out Jason was telling Rachel that our marriage was over.””

She swallowed.

“He told her he was waiting for the right time to leave me.””

A tear fell from Lily’s eye.

“But when I confronted him, he denied everything.””

Jason shook his head.

“No.””

Lily continued.

“He told me Rachel was obsessed with him.””

Rachel looked stunned.

“What?””

“He told me she was chasing him. That he felt sorry for her.””

Jason’s face went pale.

“That’s a lie.””

But nobody was listening to him anymore.

Because Rachel was looking at him differently.

Like she was seeing him for the first time.

Lily’s voice grew softer.

“I almost believed him.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“And that is the part I am most ashamed of.””

My eyes burned.

Because Lily was apologizing for trusting someone who betrayed her.

“He was my husband. The father of my child. I wanted to believe him.””

The video paused.

Daniel looked around the room.

Then he said:

“But Lily discovered something that changed everything.””

He pressed play again.

The next clip was different.

Lily was sitting closer to the camera.

The lighting was darker.

She looked like she had recorded it at night.

“I found the bank records.””

Jason’s expression changed instantly.

Daniel noticed.

So did I.

Lily continued.

“Jason has been moving money from our joint account.””

My mother whispered, “What?””

My father looked at me.

The church filled with quiet reactions.

Lily continued.

“Small amounts at first. Enough that I wouldn’t notice. Then larger transfers.””

Jason stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Daniel stopped the video.

“Mr. Reed, I suggest you remain quiet.””

Jason laughed bitterly.

“You’re threatening me at my wife’s funeral?””

“No.””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“I am reminding you that your wife spent her final weeks documenting events you claimed never happened.””

The room went silent again.

Daniel turned back to the screen.

Lily’s video continued.

“I followed the money.””

Her voice shook.

“And what I found wasn’t just an affair.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What did she find?”” my mother whispered.

Nobody answered.

Lily looked down.

“I found payments.””

She paused.

“Payments connected to the person who helped Jason.””

Jason immediately said, “Stop.””

The word came out with panic.

Not anger.

Panic.

Everyone noticed.

Daniel paused the video.

“Do you want to explain why that statement concerns you?””

Jason stared at him.

“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Then you will have no problem watching the rest.””

Jason said nothing.

The video played.

Lily took a deep breath.

“I discovered Jason wasn’t only hiding Rachel.””

She looked toward the camera.

“He was hiding someone else.””

A chill ran through me.

Someone else.

Another person.

Another secret.

Lily continued.

“And that person helped create the accident everyone believes killed me.””

The church exploded.

People gasped.

My mother started crying.

My father grabbed the back of the chair in front of him.

Rachel looked at Jason.

“You knew?””

Jason immediately shook his head.

“No.””

But his voice was different now.

Desperate.

Daniel stepped toward him.

“Who helped you, Mr. Reed?””

Jason looked around.

At all the faces accusing him.

At Rachel.

At Lily’s family.

Then something happened that I would never forget.

His eyes moved toward the back of the church.

Toward someone standing near the exit.

Someone who had been silent the entire time.

Someone who had not cried once.

The person who had been watching everything unfold.

Jason whispered one name.

And when I turned around, I felt the blood leave my face.

Because I knew that person.

Everyone in town knew that person.

And they had been standing there the entire funeral.

Listening.

Waiting.

Jason said:

May you like

“Mom.””

And Lily’s mother-in-law stepped forward.
